Lección Ochenta y nueve (89)

  
  Un testarudo (1) A stubborn (man).
     
1 (Al subir el telón, entran disputando Mariano y el criado Julián.) At the rising of the curtain, M. and the servant J. enter, quarrelling.
2 Mariano.
— Lo que usted quiera, hombre...
Pero yo necesito hablar cuanto antes con el señor Vergara...		 M.
— Anything you like (subj.)...
But I must [need] speak the soonest possible to Mr. V.
3 Julián.
— ¡No está en casa, señor!
¿Cómo se lo voy a decir? ¿Más claro?
(Mariano se está quitando el gabán sin hacerle caso) (2).		 J.
— He's not at home, sir!
How am I going to [must I] say it to you? More clearly?
(M. is taking off his overcoat, without minding him).
4 Vaya usted al escritorio (3).
Allí recibe a todo el mundo.
Para corredores y comisionistas tiene horas especiales.		 J. — Go to the office.
There he receives everybody.
For town-travellers and commission agents, he has special hours.
5 M. — Del escritorio vengo y de la joyería.
En ambas partes (4), me han dicho que el señor Vergara se había marchado diciendo que iba a su casa.		 M. — The office, I come from it and the jeweler's shop too.
At both places they have told me that Mr. V. had gone, saying he was going home.
6 J. — Pues aquí no ha llegado.
M. — No se lo habrá tragado la tierra... Esperaré.		 J. — Well, he has not arrived here.
— M. — The earth won't have swallowed him up... I shall wait.
7 (Alargándole el gabán y el sombrero.)
Póngame eso por ahí.
J. (rehusando).
— No le puedo permitir al señor que espere (5).		 (Handing him his overcoat and hat) :
Put that somewhere [by there] for me.
— J. (refusing) : I cannot allow the señor to wait [that he should w. (subj.)].
8 La consigna es que aquí no se reciben visitas de negocios.
Hágame el favor de salir.		 The orders are that business visits are not received here.
Please go out
9 M. — No salgo. Y a la fuerza no intentará usted echarme (6). I don't go out. And you will not try to turn [throw me] out by force [at the f.].
10 J. (Levantando la voz.)
— El señor me obligará a perderle el respeto.		 J. (raising his voice).
— The señor will oblige me to be disrespectful to him [lose him the respect].
  EJERCICIOS EXERCISE :
  En el restaurant. At the restaurant.
1 ¿Está libre esta mesa? Is this table unengaged?
2 Está pedida (reservada) ; puede sentarse en aquélla; It is engaged; you can sit down at that one;
3 ¿comerá Vd. al cubierto o a la carta?
— Tráigame el menú y la carta y decidiré.		 will you have (the) dinner at fixed price [at the cover] or à la carte?
— Bring me the menu and the bill of fare, and I'll decide.
4 Almuerzo de tres platos :
Huevos al gusto (a elegir), merluza con mayonesa,
chuletas de cordero con ensalada, queso,
frutas, media botella de vino o cerveza.
Cuatro pesetas. 		Three course lunch :
Eggs (at choice), hake with mayonnaise,
lamb chop and salad, cheese,
fruit, a half bottle of wine, or beer.
Four pesetas.
5 No está mal; tomaré el cubierto.
— ¿Cómo quiere Vd. los huevos?
fritos, pasados por agua, al plato, en tortilla? 		It's not bad; I shall take the fixed price,
— How do you want the eggs? fried, boiled, on the plate, in an omelet?
6 En tortilla, pero con poca sal ¿Qué es esto?
— Son los entremeses : aceitunas, rábanos, gambas. 		In an omelet, but with little salt. What is this?
They are hors-d'oeuvre : olives, radishes, shrimps.
7 No me atrevo a tomarlos, pues me sientan mal. I'll not venture to take them for they suit me ill.
8 Déme más pan (otro panecillo). Give me more bread (another small bread).
9 Este vino es muy fuerte; se me ha subido a la cabeza. This wine is very strong; it has gone up to my head.
10 Estas chuletas tienen demasiada grasa.
¿Puede Vd. cambiármelas?		 These chops are too fat;
can you change them for me?

2 Hacer caso de, to allow for, mind (fact that).
— No haga Vd. caso, Don't pay any attention to it
3 El escritorio = el despacho = la oficina.
— The bureau, writing-desk, is la mesa de despacho or de escritorio, or el buró, if it is American style.
4 En todas partes, everywhere;
en ninguna parte, nowhere.
De parte a parte, through and through.

5 Rehusar, to refuse.
6 Echar en la calle : throw into the street, turn out.
   
  The hors-d'oeuvre remain on the table and are eaten between the courses, hence " entremeses ".
A sweet is plato dulce, or dulce.
No me atrevo a hacerlo : I dare not do it.
No me atrevía a pedírselo : I dared not ask you (or him) [ask-him (you)-it].
  Esta americana me sienta bien : this coal suits me well.
From sentar : to seat.

Cambiármelas : change them for me.
Cambiárselas : change them for him (or you).
