Lección Ochenta y cinco (85)

  
  Cristóbal Colón llega al Nuevo Mundo Christopher Columbus arrives in the New World.
     
1 Dondequiera le acogen los indios con tímida amistad,
una vez vencido (1) el miedo que les inspiran los extranjeros,		 Everywhere the Indians receive him with timid friendship,

but if they are called to account [but if they ask them accounts],
6 están dispuestos a entregar cuanto poseen,
con tal que se les consienta (6) guardar el objeto maravilloso, un pedazo de espejo, un trapo rojo...		 they are disposed to give over all that they possess,
provided they are allowed [they consent them] to keep the wonderful object, a bit of mirror, a red rag...
7 Los indios sólo sienten hacia los recién llegados admiración y respeto (7). The Indians feel towards the new-comers only admiration and respect.
8 «Vinieron muchos», anota Colón el 14 de octubre,
« dando gracias a Dios, echándose al suelo»		 "(There) came many", notes Columbus on the 14th of October,
"giving thanks to God, throwing themselves to the ground,
9 y levantaban las manos al cielo y después a voces nos llamaban para que fuésemos a tierra » (8). and they would lift their hands to the sky and then would call us loudly [at voices] that we should go [be] ashore ."

6 Enséñeme une de cinco o seis pesetas. Show me one from 5 to 6 pes.
7 Botones, acompaña a este señor al tercer piso, y que le enseñen el sesenta y tres. Buttons, accompany this gentleman to the 3rd floor and let them show him the 63.
8 Hace el favor, señor, subimos en el ascensor. If you please, sir, let's go up in the lift.
9 Me gusta la habitación; ¿dónde está la llave de la luz? The room pleases me; where is the switch [key of the light]?
10 Aquí para encender al entrar, y a la cabecera de la cama tiene usted otra llave (o pera) y el botón del timbre. Here, to light up on entering, and at the head of the bed you have another switch (or pear-switch), and the button of the bell.
11 ¿Quiere usted que le suban el equipaje?
— Desde luego.		 Do you want you luggage to be brought up [that they bring up...] ?
— Certainly (since then).
  NOTES.
1 Dondequiera : where (one) likes, wherever (en todas partes), or everywhere;
also : doquiera.
— Acoger, to receive.
— Vencer, to vanquish.
— Me doy por vencido, I acknowledge [give] myself [for] vanquished.
2 ¿Quién? Who? varies in the plural :
¿Quién es este forastero? Who is this foreigner?
— ¿Quiénes son estos forasteros? Who are these foreigners?
— Demi-gods, semidióses,
but : half a kilo, medio kilo;
half an hour, media hora, etc...
The half, la mitad.
— My (better) half (wife), mi costilla (my rib).
— Ha encontrado su media naranja (his half orange) : he has found his sister soul (also : su alma gemela : his twin soul.
3 Mostrar = enseñar, to show.
La muestra, the sign (shop); the sample; the sign, mark.
4 Colorado : coloured or red.
Ella se puso colorada, She became [put herself] red.
5 Despertar, to wake; el cuento, the tale, narrative (cf. to recount);
la cuenta, the account.
6 Poseer, to possess;
consentir, to allow, permit [permitir], to consent, yield.
— Con tal que, provided that, a condición de que.
7 Los recién casados, the new-married couple (cf. recent).
— Respetar, to respect; respetable, respectable.
8 A voces : a gritos.
— ¡ No tantas voces! [Not so many shouts] : Don't shout like that!
— The verb ir has the same preterite as ser : yo fuí, vd. fué, nosotros fuímos, etc.,
I was or went, you were or went, we were or went, etc...
