Lección Sesenta y seis (66)

 
  Todo tiene arreglo All is put right again [All has arrangement].
     
1 Estaba muy enojado con este asunto,
cuando reparé en un carabinero (1) de uniforme gris-verde,
que estaba de servicio en la estación.
I was much worried with this affair, when I noticed a custom-officer in a [of] greyish-green uniform, who was on duty at the station.
2 Le expliqué mi caso y me dijo :
— Diríjase a la Dirección de Aduanas, en el Ministerio de Hacienda (2).
I explained my case to him, and he said to me :
— Apply to the Direction of the Customs, at the Ministry of Finances.
3 Confieso que no tenia gran confianza en el éxito de este paso, pero hacia mal. I confess that I had not great confidence in the success of this step; but I was wrong [I did ill].
4 En el Ministerio, fingí que no entendía ni
palabra de español,
y así conseguí llegar hasta un funcionario de importancia (3).
At the Ministry, I pretended that I did not understand one [nor] word of Spanish,
and thus succeeded in approaching [arriving at] an important official.
5 Este me recibió muy amablemente, dio la
orden de poner un telegrama (4) a la Aduana de Irún,
The latter received me very kindly, gave the order to send [put] a telegram to the Irun Customs,
6 y me aseguró que dentro de dos días estaría el baúl en Madrid. and assured me that within [of] 2 days, the trunk would be in M.
7 Y finalmente me dijo :
— Descuide usted, que lo que le ha ocurrido ocurre todos los días,
y siempre se arregla sin tropiezo.
And finally he told me :
— Don't worry, for [that] what has happened to you happens every day
and is always put right without any hitch.
8 Le dí las gracias, y me marché satisfecho,
aunque perplejo, preguntándome :
I tendered [gave] him thanks and went away satisfied,
although perplexed, asking myself :
9 Si esto ocurre diariamente,
¿por qué no hacen nada para evitarlo?
If this happens every day
why do they do nothing to avoid it?

6 Aquí ocurre esto muy a menudo. Here, this happens very often.
7 No puedo impedirlo; no pude evitarlo; no podía adivinarlo; I cannot prevent it;
I could not avoid it;
I was unable to guess it;
8 no podría conseguirlo
no podré llegar a tiempo;
no he podido arreglar el asunto.
I could not [should not be able] to obtain it (or succeed in it);
I shall not be able to arrive in time;
I have not been able to settle the affair.

  NOTES.
1 Enojado, annoyed, angry,
aburrido, bored, dull, or boring.
Reparar, to repair : reparar un automóvil.
But with en : reparar en una cosa = fijarse en una cosa, i.e. to notice, mind.
Carabinero : soldado destinado a la persecución del contrabando.
2 Dirigir, to direct or address.
La dirección, the direction or the address.
Un sobre en blanco es un sobre sin dirección : an unwritten [blank] envelope is an envelope without (an) address.
In diríjase, g is replaced by j to preserve the j sound before a.
La hacienda (from hacer) : a farming estate, or fortune, possessions or, finally, finances.
3 Fingir, to feign.
Conseguir, to obtain, succeed in.
4 To send a telegram:
Poner un telegrama and not mandar or enviar.
To wire : telegrafiar.
