Lección Cincuenta y nueve (59)

  
  Para, pasar el rato (1) To pass the time.
     
1 Definición.
— ¿Qué es un avaro?		 Definition.
— What is a miser?
2 Un hombre que se empeña (2) en vivir pobre para morir rico. A man who persists in living poor in order to die rich.
3 En la oficina.
— Me parece que van a despedirme.
— ¿Por qué?		 At the office.
— Seems to me they're going to dismiss me.
— What for?
4 Porque he roto un frasco de goma.
— Eso no tiene importancia.		 Because I broke a pot of glue.
— That has no importance.
5 Es que lo he roto en la cabeza del jefe de contabilidad. Yes but [it is that] I broke it on fin] the head of the chief-accountant.
6 Entre cazadores.
— ¿Ha cambiado usted de perro?		 Between sportsmen.
— You have changed (your) dog?
7 Sí; éste es mucho mejor que él que (3) tenia antes. Yes this one is much better than the one I had before.
8 ¿De manera que está usted contento de él? So that you're glad of it?
9 Figúrese : ya ha mordido dos veces a mi suegra. Imagine : he's already bitten [at] my mother-in-law twice.
10 En el restaurant.
— Este pollo es más duro que un zapato.
¿De dónde ha salido?		 In a restaurant.
— This chicken is harder than a shoe.
From where has it come?
11 Quizás (4) de un huevo duro. — Perhaps from a hard(-boiled) egg.
  EJERCICIOS EXERCISE :
1 A pesar de mis consejos, él se empeña
(or : se obstina) en llegar tarde a la oficina.		 In spite of my counsels, he persists in arriving late at the office.
2 Sí; ha cambiado mucho desde nace, algún tiempo. Yes; he has changed much for some time past [it makes s. t.].
3 Su trabajo ya no le interesa; para él no tiene nada importancia. His work interests him no more; for him nothing has (any) importance.
4 Un día u otro quedará despedido. One day or another he will find himself dismissed.
5 Ayer se equivocó varias veces en las cuentas; Yesterday he got mistaken several times in his accounts,
6 el jefe se enfadó y le mandó volver a hacer todo desde el principio. the chief became angry and ordered him to do it all over again [go back to do] from the beginning.
7 No se fija en lo que hace. He does not pay attention to {fix himself in] what he does.
8 Si sigue así, le mandarán a paseo. If he continues like this, they will fire him [send him on a walk].
  NOTES.
1 Un rato = un momento.
Pasar el rato is a very current phrase; also pasar el tiempo.
2 Empeñarse, or obstinarse (with en).
3 That, the one who (which) : el que, la que (not este, esta);
those, the ones who (which) : los que, las que.
4 Quizás = quizá = acaso.
   
  Mandar, to order or send for (enviar).
¿Manda usted? (you order?) is the equivalent of : ¿Decia usted? (you said?),
i. e., Pardon me? I beg your pardon?
