  Están charlando (They) are talking.
     
1 Perdone, señor,
¿por donde se vá a la Puerta del Sol?
- Está usted en ella, caballero (1).		 Pardon (me), sir,
what's the way [by where one goes] to the P. de S.
- You are in it, sir.
2 ¿Pero dónde esta la Puerta?
- No hay tal puerta (2) ; es el nombre de la plaza.		 But where is the Door
- there is no such door; it is the name of the square.
3 Miro alrededor de mí;
es una plaza con anchas aceras atestadas de muchedumbre (3).		 I look around me;
it is a square with [of] large pavements thronged with crowd(s).
4 Avanzo con dificultad, pues la gente no se mueve. I advance with difficulty, for the people don't move (sing.).
5 Hay pocas mujeres, y la mayoría de los hombres son jóvenes. There are few women and the majority of the men are young.
6 Están charlando: parecen esperar alguna cosa. They talk; they seem to wait (for) something.
7 Vendedores ambulantes ofrecen billetes de lotería,
piedras para los mecheros (4), y otras menudencias.		 Itinerant vendors offer tickets for lotteries,
flints for [the] lighters, and other trifles.
8 Hay guardias, por parejas y muy apacibles (5) .
Parece que no se trata de una manifestación.
¿Qué será?		 There are policemen by pairs and very peaceful.
It seems that there is no question of a demonstration.
What will it be?
9 Pregunto a un señor de aspecto burgués :
- ¿Qué pasa?
- ¿Cómo, qué pasa? No pasa nada.		 I ask [at] a gentleman of bourgeois aspect :
- What happens?
- How? what happens? There happens nothing.
10 Entonces ¿por qué hay tanta gente?
¿Qué hacen aquí?		 Then why are there so many people?
What do they do here?
11 Hacer no hacen nada de particular;
que están tomando el sol.		 (As for) doing, (they) do nothing [of] particular;
what, they take the sun.
  EJERCICIOS EXERCISE :
1 ¡Qué muchedumbre en las aceras!
No se puede dar un paso. 		What (a) crowd on the pavements!
One cannot take [give] a step.
2 Sí, a todas horas hay mucha gente por aquí. Yes at all hours there are many people [by] here (sing.).
3 Esta plaza es el sitio donde se reúnen los desocupados This square is the place where meet [themselves] all the unoccupied (people)
4 para pasar el rato en charlar y fumar. to pass the time [moment] [in] talking and smoking.
5 Se habla de política, de deportes, de la lotería y de toros. They speak [it is spoken] of politics, of sport, of the lottery and of bulls
6 Es el "casino al aire libre " de los madrileños. it is the " Open Air Club *' [casino at the free air] of the Madrilenian.
  NOTES.
1 Caballero is said only to a stranger.
2 No hay tal cosa : there is not such (a) thing, there's nothing of the kind.
3 La muchedumbre : the crowd, multitude.
4 Ofrecer : to offer.
- The lighter : el mechero (from : la mecha, the wick)
or : encendedor, from encender, to light.
- Incendiar : to set fire to.
- El fuego : the fire.
El incendio : the fire or conflagration.
5 From la paz, the peace; pacífico, peaceful.
   
 

Dar un paso (hard s) : to take [give] a step in both English senses.
- El sitio (tee-wo) is the place, spot (el lugar) and also the room you occupy :
Suba al coche, que hay sitio para usted :
Get into the car, there is room for you.
  El casino (hard s) is the most current word for the club,
where one goes for entertainment. El club is the sporting club.
