  ¿Se puede? - ¡Adelante! May one (come in) ? Come in.
     
1 Anoche estaba tan cansado
que me acosté en seguida de comer.		 Yesterday night I was so tired
that I went to bed immediately after [in sequel of] dinner.
2 He dormido bien;
me he despertado a las ocho; me he lavado y vestido.		 I have slept well;
I have waked up at 8; I have washed and dressed [me].
3 ¡Tac tac! llaman a la puerta.
- Se puede? - ¡Adelante! (1).		 Tap, tap, somebody [(they)] knock [call] at the door.
- May one (come in)? - Come in [(go) ahead].
4 Es la criada, que me trae el desayuno :
café con leche, un panecillo y mantequilla (2).		 It's the maid who brings in breakfast for me :
coffee with milk, a roll and butter.
5 ¿A qué hora se almuerza? le (3) pregunto.
- De dos a tres.		 At what time do we lunch? I ask.
- From 2 to 3.
6 ¿Cuántos huéspedes hay?
- Acaba de abrirse la pensión, señor, es usted el primero.		 How many boarders are there?
- The boardinghouse has just [finishes] opened, sir.
You're [it's you] the first.
7 Lo que yo sospechaba; tendré que buscar otra pensión,
para tener compañía (4).		 What I suspected; I'll have to look for another boarding-h..
to have company.
8 Ahora voy a dar una vuelta por la ciudad;
son las nueve y media (5).		 Now I go for [give] a stroll through the town; it is half past nine.
9 Desde el balcón, miro a la calle;
están empezando a abrir las tiendas; hay pocos transeúntes.
Madrid se despierta tarde

From the balcony, I look towards the street;
they are beginning to open the shops; there are few passersby.
Madrid wakes up late.

  NOTES.
1

One says : llamar a la puerta : "to call" at the door and not "knock" or "ring".
- May one come in? : ¿Se puede? (understood : entrar).
- Come in! : ¡Pase usted! or ¡Adelante!
- We know delante, before, in front of, used with de : delante de la casa, before the house.
Let us recall that before, previous to, is antes.
Antes de contestar : before answering.
2 Traer : to bring (Llevar : to carry).
- Panecillo, dim. of pan.
3 Le : to him or her.

Tener, to have or hold, irregular : yo tengo, usted tiene, I, you have;
yo tendré, usted tendrá, I shall, you will, have.
- Sospechar : to suspect.
5 Una vuelta : a stroll.

Miro a la calle and not en : I look in(to), or towards the street, with an idea of motion.
- Los transeúntes, the passers-by.
- Empezar : to begin; despertarse : to wake up.

Querer, to want, also means to love (not to like).
Ex. : I like {am fond of) omelet : me gusta la tortilla [om. pleases me[.
Do you like to study? ¿Le gusta estudiar? or ¿Le gusta a usted estudiar?

1st line : quieras is a subjunctive, after aunque.
- Do you love me? : Me quieres?

Notice el consuelo, consolation, solace.
It is also, and in spite of its masculine ending, a feminine Christian name :
Consuelo (familiar for Consolación).
- The counsel, advice : el consejo (We have seen
¿Qué me aconseja usted? What do you advise me (to do).
- El consejero : the counsellor, adviser.
