  No tenemos prisa We are not in a hurry [have not haste].
     
1 Señoras, ¿aceptarían ustedes (1) ,
una taza de te en el vagón-restaurant?		 Ladies, would you accept
a cup of tea in the dining-car?
2 Gracias señor, es usted muy amable;
pero no estamos acostumbradas a tomar té.		 Thank you, sir, you're very kind;
but we are not used to taking tea.
3 ¿Una taza de café? o un refresco de limón?
Por favor, me será muy agradable (2).		 A cup of coffee? or lemonade?
I pray you, it will be very agreeable for me.

Las dos señoras se miran.
- ¿Quiere (3) beber algo, Victoria? Hace tanto calor.
- Si usted quiere, doña Amelia.

 The two ladies look at each other.
- Will you drink something, V.? It is so hot [makes so much heat].
- If you want, doña Amelia.
5 Vamos al vagón-restaurant.
Pocas mesas están ocupadas.		 We go to the dining-car.
Few tables are engaged.
6 En una de ellas está nuestro inglés,
que se ha quedado allí desde el almuerzo,
bebiendo coñac (4) y fumando su pipa.		 At [in] one of them is our Englishman
who has stayed there since lunch
drinking cognac and smoking his pipe.
7 Tomo té con limón, y las señoras refrescos de naranja.
El tren para en una gran estación (5).		 I take tea with lemon and the ladies orange squash.
The train stops in a big station.
8 Estamos en Valladolid, dice doña Victoria,
y son las cuatro y diez; llevamos media hora de retraso.

We are at V., says doña Victoria,
and it is 4.10: we are half an hour late [have h. an h. of delay].

9 ¿Qué importa? replica doña Amelia;
no tenemos prisa; nadie nos espera.		 What does it matter? replies doña Amelia:
we are not in a hurry: nobody waits (for) us.
  EJERCICIOS EXERCISE :
1 Hay mucho ruido aquí; vamos a un café. There is much noise here let's go to a cafe.
2 ¿Qué quiere usted tomar?

What will you take?
3 Tomaré café con leche. I shall take coffee with milk.
4 ¡ Camarero ! ¡ dos cafés !
- ¿Café solo? - Uno solo, y otro con leche. 		Waiter, two coffees!
- Black coffee [coffee alone]? One black [alone] and one with milk.
5 ¿No tiene usted prisa, verdad? You're not in a hurry, are you [you have not haste, true?].
6 Ninguna; hablaremos tranquilamente. Not at all [none]; we shall talk peacefully.
7 ¿Si he comprendido bien,
lo que usted me aconseja es no aceptar esa oferta?		 If I have understood well,
what you advise me (to do), is not to accept that offer?
8 Claro, hombre;
no puede usted ganar nada aceptándola.		 Of course, indeed;
you can gain nothing by accepting it.
  NOTES.
1 Aceptar : to accept.
- ¿Acepta usted? Do you accept?
- ¿Aceptan ustedes? Do you accept? (to several persons).
- ¿Aceptará usted? ¿Aceptarán ustedes? Will you accept?
- ¿Aceptaría usted? ¿ Aceptarían ustedes? Would you accept?
- Acepto; aceptaré; aceptaría : I accept, shall accept, should accept.
2 Refresco : a cool drink or syrup.
- Por favor is more pressing than Haga el favor, and correspond to I pray you.
3 Or : quiere usted; without usted, it sounds more familiar.

Here: aquí; there: allí (pron. : aa-yee).
- From desde; after : después.
5 Parar ; to stop; or : el tren se detiene.
- Grande, before a singular loses -de.
  La leche (laytchay) : the milk.
- Quiero sólo (or solamente) un café : I want only one coffee.
- Quiero un café solo : I want a black coffee. One does not say "café negro".
- Esa oferta : that offer. Esta oferta : this offer.
