  ¿Dónde está...? Where is?
     
1 No entiendo bien lo que la señora me dice de su hermano,
porque habla muy de prisa (1).		 (I) don't understand well what [it which] the lady tells me about her brother,
because (she) speaks very quickly.
2 Sin embargo, contesto :
- Claro; no es tan fácil como el español.
Pero me dirá usted donde está (2)...		 Nevertheless, (I) answer :
of course (it) is not so easy as Spanish,
But will you tell me where is...
3 Yo también he estudiado el francés;
he tomado lecciones en Madrid,
tres veces por semana, durante dos años (3) ;		 I too have studied [the] French;
(I) have taken lessons in Madrid, three times a [by] week, during
2 years;
4 he pagado no sé cuanto,
y total que no puedo decir ni « Buenos días » en francés.		 (I) have paid (I) don't know how much,
and finally [total that] I can't say even "Good day" in French.
5 Si usted es de Madrid, señora, sabrá usted de seguro donde está... If you are from Madrid, Madam, you will know for sure where is...
6 Sí, señor, soy madrileña.
Sólo estoy bien en Madrid, sólo vivo a gusto (4) en mi casa,
calle del General Pardiñas...		 Yes, sir, (I) am (a) Madrilenian.
I am well only in Madrid, I live at ease [at taste] only in my house (at home),
General P. street.
7 ¡General Pardiñas! ¡Bravo, señora! Gracias a Dios! Gen. P. : Bravo, madam! God be blessed [Thanks to God!].

1 ¿Me comprende usted? or : ¿Me entiende usted? Do you understand me?
2 Sí, le comprendo or : le entiendo. Yes (I) understand you [it].

¿Me ha comprendido (or : entendido) usted?
- Le he comprendido (or : entendido).

Have you understood me?
- (I) have understood you [it].
4 ¿Cuánto ha pagado usted? How much have you paid?
5 No he pagado nada, y no quiero pagar. (I) have [not] paid nothing and I will not pay.
6 He olvidado esta palabra no sé cuantas veces. (I) have forgotten the word (I) don't know how many times.
  NOTES.
1

De prisa (pron. day preessa), "of haste", is more current than rápido.
- Entender, to understand, get, is irregular : yo entiendo :
To hear is oír.

2 Embargo, attachment.
Sin embargo, without constraint, in spite of that, nevertheless, a very common phrase that it takes time to get used to.

Una vez (veth) : once;
dos veces : twice.
In the plur. z becomes ces.
La voz : the voice; las voces, the voices.
4 A gusto : at ease. Gusto : taste or pleasure.
Con mucho gusto : with much pleasure.
   
 

Notice : entender, entendido ; entiende, entiendo.
It is when the stress falls on the syllable ten that it is transformed into tien
(Read again less. 14, paragr. 2).

Cuanto, how (much, many) varies in the plural and femin., like mucho and poco.
