| 1 | Города и деревни мы обходили и больших дорог избегали .. (1) | We would go round towns and villages, and shun the important roads. |
| 2 | Так вот и идём, и никто нас пока (2) ещё не беспокоил. | That's how we go, and so far nobody has yet disturbed us. |
| 3 | A теперь ищем, где бы (З) остановиться переночевать. | And now we seek where to stop for the night. |
| 4 | Заезжайте на мельницу. Как шоссейную дорогу пересечёте (4), | Call at the mill. As you [will] cut the high road, |
| 5 | так полевой дорожкой на большую фабричную трубу и идите. | go then by the lane on the left towards [on] the tall factory-chimney. |
| 6 | Я поеду вперёд и буду вас ждать .. (5) | I shall go before, and wait for you. |
| 7 | Вскоре (6) тройка появилась во дворе, и мы уже встретились как друзья... | Soon the three appeared in the yard, and we met already as friends (do). |
| 8 | На случай таких посещений у меня был готов сарайчик (7). | For the case of such a visit, I had a cart-shed ready. |
| 9 | Гости разложили свои вещи, умылись, и мы сели ужинать. | My guests spread out their things, washed, and we sat down to sup. |
| 10 | Тут подошёл и мой товарищ Борис, и началась беседа (8). | My comrade Boris, joined us too [There approached and my comrade], and the conversation began. |
| 11 | Они рассказывали про свою жизнь, а мы - про свою (9), | They told [of] their life, and we [of] ours, |
| 12 | и как эта жизнь ни была различна - | And how(ever) different this life [not] might be |
