	Как вы поживаете?		How (do) you do [fare]? How are you? "How you (pl.) living on?"

1	Здравствуйте (1), друг мой; как вы поживаете?		Good day, my friend [friend my]; how (do) you do [fare]?
2	Хорошо, спасибо. Что вы желаете?		Well, thank you. What (do) you want? ("What you (pl.) wishing?")
3	Я желаю знать, где ваш папа.		I want to know where your papa (is).
4	Извините, я не знаю где он,		Excuse (me), I (do) not know where he (is),
5	но мама дома (2); если вы желаете...		but mamma (is) at home; if you want...
6	Нет, спасибо, я её (3) не знаю,		No, thank you, I (do) not know her [I her not know],

7	а (4) ваш папа, скоро будет дома?		but your papa, when will (he) be at home? ("/soon -ly/ /will be/ /at home/?")
8	Кто его (5) знает!		Who knows it (Who him knows)! AK: его can refer to "papa" (masculine) or even to "something' (neuter). So, you can you also это ("it, this thing') instead.
	Может быть сейчас, может быть завтра!		May-be presently, may-be to-morrow.
9	дома; друг; его; её; как.		At home ; friend; him or it ; her; how.
10	сейчас; завтра; может быть.		Presently; to-morrow; may-be. (two words, "may be")

	УПРАЖНЕНИЕ	(oopra(d)jniĕniĕ)	EXERCISE.
1	Извините его, он вас не понимает.		Excuse him, he does not understand you [he you not understands]. (you pl.)
2	Я начинаю говорить по-русски.		I begin to speak Russian.
3	Ваш друг говорит очень медленно.		Your friend speaks very slowly.
4	Может быть вы не знаете его хорошо (?)		May-be you (do) not know him well. (Maybe you don't know him well?) ("Maybe you not know him good?")
5	Когда вы начинаете?		When (do) you begin? ("When you (pl.) starting?")
6	Никто его не любит [так] как я.		Nobody loves him [him not loves] like me [I]. (as me -> "as I") ("Nobody him not likes like/as I.")
7	Я начинаю сейчас.		I begin presently. (I'm starting (right) now.)
8	Он тоже голоден.		He (is) also hungry.
9	Она тоже помогает.		She also helps.
10	Как хорошо вы его знаете (?)		How well you know him. (How well do you (pl.) know him?)

	NOTES.
1	Don't be frightened by this word! Здравствуйте! It is sounded simply zdrasst'vooitiĕ, or more simply still : Здрасьте! zdrasstiĕ (Hello or hi!). Как is : how.
2	Дома : at home, in one's house.
3	Её (pron. iĕio) is the object of она, she; in English her (pronoun). (This is a passive object in accusative case - "to have, to handle her" - иметь её) — Она меня понимает: she understands me. — Я понимаю её or Я её понимаю: I understand her.
4	But is но (однако) or а. There is a shade of meaning: но (однако) implies an opposition, whereas а tends simply towards and (and at the same time).
5	(AK: Passive objects pronouns feminine она → её masculine он → его neuter оно → его/это ) Just as она becomes её in the (passive) object form, он becomes его (pron. iĕvаw). — Он вас знает: he knows you. — Вы его знаете or вы знаете его: you (pl.) know him.

In spite of this terrible здравствуйте (which can be shortened into [здрасьте] zdrasstiĕ), this lesson is easy, and short.
You find in it many words which you already knew and which will soon be old acquaintances of yours.
