她孤独地在病房里渡过了又一个除夕夜。 She had to spend the New Year Eve in the hospital alone.
tā gūdú de zài bìngfáng lǐ dùguò le yòu yī gè Chúxī yè。  
那一晚，她躺在床上下了新的决心：
在新的一年里换份好工作。		 That night, she made a new resolution:
to find a better job.
nà yī wǎn， tā tǎng zài chuáng shàngxià le xīn de juéxīn：
zài xīn de yī nián lǐ huàn fèn hǎo gōngzuò。		  
她相信，
只要有一份收入不错又体面的工作，
她就会拥有快乐的生活。		 She believed
that as long as she landed on a well-paid decent job,
she could have a happier life.
tā xiāngxìn，
zhǐyào yǒu yī fèn shōurù bùcuò yòu tǐmiàn de gōngzuò，
tā jiù huì yōngyǒu kuàilè de shēnghuó。		  
财富，地位，朋友，
甚至白马王子都会有的。		 Fortune, high social status, friends,
even the dreamed husband would all come to her.

通过不懈努力，
李曼终于找到了一份高薪工作。		 Following her persistent pursuit,
Li Man finally hunted down a very well paid job.
tōngguò bùxiè nǔlì，

她从小报社换到了大型媒体，
从小编辑换成了营销人员。		 She hopped from a small publisher to a big media agency,

飞机场，活动中心 …		 From quiet office, to grand hotel,
airport and event centre …

总之，
她的新工作需要不停地出差和应酬。		 In summary,
her new job demands constant trips and social events.

she earned three times as much as she could have earned from previous job.

她为自己买了名牌化妆品和衣服。 She bought name-brand cosmetics and clothes for herself.

她自豪地向别人介绍自己的工作。 She explained her work to others proudly.
tā zìháo de xiàng biéren jièshào zìjǐ de gōngzuò。  
她约以前的好友们出来喝茶，
但她们都说有事不能来。		 She invited her old friends to have tea with her,
but they all declined with excuses.
tā yuē yǐqián de hǎoyǒu men chūlái hē chá，
dàn tāmen dōu shuō yǒushì bùnéng lái。		  
她有一肚子话想和人分享，
却找不到这样的一个人。		 She was so eagerly to chat with someone about life,
but she could find no one.
tā yǒu yīdùzi huà xiǎng hé rén fēnxiǎng，
què zhǎobudào zhèyàng de yīgèrén。		  
路过花店时，
她想起了几年前除夕夜的场景。		 Passing by the flower store,
she remembered a happy New Eve night years ago.
lùguò huādiàn shí，
tā xiǎngqǐ le jǐnián qián Chúxī yè de chǎngjǐng。		  
于是她走进花店，
想找回以前快乐的感觉。		 So she walked into the store,
hoping to find the happiness that she had lost.
yúshì tā zǒujìn huādiàn，

花店老板是一个年轻人，很斯文的样子。 The owner of the flower store was a polite young man.
huādiàn lǎobǎn shì yī gè niánqīngrén， hěn sīwén de yàngzi。  
＂想买什么花？＂他问。 “Which kind of flower you’re looking for?” He asked.
“ xiǎng mǎi shénme huā？＂ tā wèn。  
＂看了能让人回忆起快乐的花，
有吗？＂
她随意地答。		 “The one that can remind me of happiness.
Do you have anything like that?”
She answered absent-mindedly.
“kàn le néng ràng rén huíyì qǐ kuàilè de huā，
yǒu ma？＂
tā suíyì de dá。		  
他被她的回答吸引了。 He was enchanted by her answer.
tā bèi tā de huídá xīyǐn le。  
＂如果你看到的这些花都不能，
让我去仓库找找看。
你来自竹乡市？＂他好奇地问。		 “If none of the ones you see here can do that for you,
I’ll have a look at the back.
Do you come from Zu Xiang city?” He asked out of curiosity.
“ rúguǒ nǐ kàn dào de zhèxiē huā dōu bùnéng，
ràng wǒ qù cāngkù zhǎo zhǎo kàn。
nǐ láizì zhúxiāngshì？＂ tā hàoqí de wèn。		  
＂我的外婆家在竹乡，
我小时候在外婆家生活了很多年。
你怎么听出来的？＂她惊讶地问他。		 “My Grandma lived in Zu Xiang,
and I had lived with her for years when I was little.
How do you guess that out?” She asked in surprise.

“ wǒ de wàipó jiā zài zhúxiāng，
wǒ xiǎoshíhou zài wàipó jia shēnghuó le hěn duō nián。
nǐ zěnme tīng chūlái de？＂ tā jīngyà de wèn tā。

  
＂我也在竹乡长大，
你一说话我就听出来了。
你等一下！＂说着，
店主消失在里屋。		 “I myself had grown up in Zu Xiang.
The moment you started talking, I guessed it out.
Please wait for a moment!”
He then disappeared in the back of the room.
“ wǒ yě zài zhúxiāng zhǎngdà，
nǐ yī shuōhuà wǒ jiù tīng chūlái le。
nǐ děng yīxià！＂ shuō zhe，
diànzhǔ xiāoshī zài lǐ wū。		  
不一会儿，他又从里屋出来，
手里托着一盆水竹。		 In a brief moment, he re-appeared again
with a pot of water bamboo in hand.
bù yīhuìr， tā yòu cóng lǐ wū chūlái，
shǒulǐ tuō zhe yī pén shuǐ zhú。

“竹乡最多的就是竹子，
对我来说，每次看到它，就象回到了童年，
童年有我最快乐的时光。		 “Zu Xiang is abound with bamboo.
As for me, the sight of it always reminds me of my childhood.
My happiest moments were in my childhood.
“ zhú xiāng zuìduō de jiùshì zhúzi，
duìwǒláishuō， měicì kàn dào tā， jiù xiàng huídào le tóngnián，
tóngnián yǒu wǒ zuì kuàilè de shíguāng。 		 
不知道它会不会让你也回忆起快乐？＂ Not sure if it will do the same thing to you?”
bù zhīdào tā huìbùhuì ràng nǐ yě huíyì qǐ kuàilè？＂  
李曼看着水竹尖尖的叶子，
突然想起外婆家的后院，
那里除了几盆花草，
就是一片绿竹子。		 Li Man gazed at the sharp leaves of the water bamboo.
All of a sudden, she remembered the backyard of Grandpa’s.
Other than a few pots of flower,
the rest was a field of green bamboo.
lǐ màn kàn zhe shuǐ zhú jiānjiān de yèzi，
tūrán xiǎngqǐ wàipó jiāde hòuyuàn，
nàli chúle jǐ pén huācǎo，
jiùshì yīpiàn lǜ zhúzi。		  
“真的吔！＂李曼接过水竹，
整个人都清新起来。		 “It does!” Li Man took the pot
and felt refreshed.
“ zhēn de yē！＂ lǐ màn jiēguò shuǐ zhú，
zhěng gèrén dōu qīngxīn qilai。		  
“那就送给你吧。＂他真诚地对她说。 “If that’s true then it’s yours.” He told her sincerely.
“ nà jiù sònggěi nǐ ba。＂ tā zhēnchéng de duì tā shuō。  
一盆水竹，让李曼认识了他，
也让她开始认识自己不快乐的原因。		 A pot of bamboo led Li Man to know him,
it also helped her to realize the reason that she was not happy.
yī pén shuǐ zhú， ràng lǐ màn rènshi le tā，
yě ràng tā kāishǐ rènshi zìjǐ bù kuàilè de yuányīn。
