verb stem + に いく
  If a person moves to another place in order to do something,
we can describe their movement and its purpose this way:
   
に/ へ  Particles: destination of movement + ni / he [e]
   
に 行く/来る/帰る
に いく/くる/かえる

Describing the purpose of movement - ni + go / arrive / return

ni iku/kuru/kaeru

 
 

The purpose of movement can either be a noun (kaimono - shopping) or a phrase with a verb, its object and so forth.
Verbs describing the purpose of a movement must be in their stem forms.

デパート に かばん を かい に いきました。  I went to a department store to buy a bag.
depaato ni, kaban o kai ni, ikimashita.  
メアリー さん は にほん  に にほんご を べんきょうし に きました。 Mary has come to Japan to study Japanese. 

mearii san wa, nihon ni, nihongo o benkyoo-shi ni kimashita.
