| The past tense of verbs looks like the following, where ～ stands for the stem of a verb. | |

| ～ませんでした | past tense negative |
| ~masen deshita | |
| メアリー さん は くじ ごろ うち に かえりました。 | Mary returned at about nine. |

mearii san-wa ku-ji goro uchi ni kaerimashita. |
|
| わたし は きのう にほんご を べんきょう しません でした。 | I did not study Japanese yesterday. |
|
watashi-wa kinoo nihongo-o benkyoo shimasen deshita. |

| For です sentences, the following should be observed: | |
