| Grandfather: | So we are all gathered here. A new year will start as of today. Let's celebrate it with o-toso. (O-toso is an alcoholic drink which is served with o-sechi and is said to drive out evil spirits.) | |
| Grandmother: | Go ahead. You should drink first, since you're grandpa. | |
| Grandfather: | Happy New Year! | |

| Daichi: | I want to drink o-toso too! | |
| Grandfather: | Oh, Daichi! You want to drink some too? OK, just a little bit. | |
| Daichi: | Gulp. Wow! Mmmm! It tastes strange, but because it is sweet I wanna drink more! | |
| Grandmother: | No, you can't. It may be sweet but it's still alcohol. So, let's eat some o-sechi (an assortment of traditional New Year's food). | |
| Mother: | Wow, it must have taken a lot of work to make this much. | |
| Grandmother: | O-sechi brings good luck. Please eat some black soybeans (kuromame) so you can stay healthy and you will be able to work diligently (mame) throughout the year. | |
| Daichi: | Then Grandma and Grandpa should eat this shrimp so they can live a long life. | |
| Grandmother: | (Sob sob) Oh, you're such a nice little boy! | |
| Daichi: | Well, I want to get my o-toshidama (pocket money given to kids on New Years Day) from you guys for ever! | |
| Grandmother: | Oh! So you are after o-toshidama, eh? Oh well, here it is, your o-toshidama. This one is for your older brother. And this one is for you, Daichi. | |
