  Пословицы. Proverbs
     
1 Солжёшь сегодня, не поверят и завтра. (1) (If) you [will] lie to-day, they won't believe you tomorrow.
2 Насильно мил не будешь. Nice you won't be constrainedly.
3 Что у трезвого на уме
— то у пьяного на языке.		 What the fasting man has in his mind,
the drunken man has on his tongue
(Wine loosens the tongue).
4 Не красна изба углами, a красна пирогами. (2) The isba is not (made) beautiful by its icon-corners, but by its cakes.
5 Смерть не за горами, a за плечами. Death is not behind the mountains, but behind your shoulders.
6 Чужая душа — потёмки (З) The soul of others is darkness.
7 Кошке игрушки, a мышке слёзки. (4) Fun [toys] for the cat, tears for the mouse.
8 Сто голов, сто умов. One hundred heads, one hundred minds.
9 Курица не птица, баба не человек. (5) The hen is no bird, woman no human being.
10 Бедность — не порок.
— Голод не тётка. (6)		 Poverty is no vice.
Hunger is not (your) aunt.
11 В гостях хорошо, a дома лучше. We like to be guests [as guests well], but better (to be) at home.
     
12 Каков поп, таков и приход (7) Such parson, such parish.
13 Дуракам счастье.
— У страха глаза велики.		 For fools happiness.
Fear has large eyes.
14 Горшок котлу не товарищ (8) The pot is no companion fur the caldron.
15 Первый блин комом.
— Нет дыма без огня. (9)		 The first pancake is a failure.
No smoke without a fire.
16 Один в поле не воин.
— Всякому овощу своё время. (10)		 One man in the plain is not a warrior.
For each vegetable its season.
17 Повторение — мать учения. Repetition is the mother of knowledge.
18 Будешь друг, да не вдруг. You'll be friend but not at once.
19 Куда иголка, туда и нитка. Whither the needle, thither the thread,
20 В чужих руках ломоть велик. (11) In another man's hand, a slice (looks) big.
21 У бабы волос долог, да ум короток. (12) Woman has long hair and a short mind.
22 Скороговорка
— На дворе трава, на траве дрова. (13)		 A tongue-twister [Quick saying] :
In the yard (is) the grass, on the grass the fire-wood.
 

УПРАЖНЕНИЕ

EXERCISE
1 С тех пор, как он мне солгал, я ему больше не верю. Since [those times, as] he lied to me, I believe him no longer.
2 Когда он трезвый, он совсем другой человек. When he is sober he is quite another man.
3 Я у них погостил в прошлом году. I was-a-guest at their house last year.
4 Повторите ещё несколько раз, с начала до конца. Repeat again several times, from beginning to end.
5 У меня больше не хватает сил (1),
дайте мне отдохнуть на минуту. 		I have no strength (plur.) left, let me rest for a minute.
6 Из этого положения нет выхода. There is no way out of this situation.
7 Кто распространяет эти ложные слухи? Who spreads these false rumours?
  Сила : strength.
В единении: Union gives power.

ADDITIONAL EXERCISE
1 Что у вас есть на сладкое?
- Мороженное (1).		 What have you for dessert?
— Ice-cream.
2 Какие у неё широкие плечи! What broad shoulders she has !
3 По доброй воле, или насильно? Willingly, or by force?
4 Дом у них не натопленный. Their house is not heated.
5 Он сломал себе палец. He broke (one of his) finger(s).
6 Зажгите электричество! Switch on the light !
7 Потушите! Switch if off !
  (1) Мороженное, from мороз: the frost, cold.  
 

NOTES - ЗАМЕТКИ
1 Солжёшь : you [thou] will lie.
- Лжёшь : you lie.
Ложь : lie, lying. (gen. лжи).
Ложный слух: false rumour.
2 For the people, красный (red) is synonymous with красивый: beautiful.
Прекрасный: splendid.
Прекрасно: Good! All right !
— Пирог : a pie ;
пирожное: pastry;
сладкое: the dessert.
In the isba the красный угол was the corner most decorated with icons, portraits etc...
3 Мы сидим в потёмках : We are in the darkness[es].
Тёмный, dark, contrary of светлый, clear, luminous.
Темнота (t'emnota), or тьма : darkness.
4 Мышка, diminutive of мышь, mouse,
and слёзки, of слёзы (sl'ozy) : tears;
слеза (sl'eza): a tear.
5 Баба: the woman, (popular) : the "wife".
6 Порок: vice.
— Порочный: vicious.
Тётя: the aunt, becomes тётка (familiar), or тётушка (endearing).
7 Приход : arrival, or income, or parish.
- Расход: expense.
- Выход: going out; exit, way out.
— Уход: departure.
8 Горшок: the earthen pot;
котёл: the caldron.
9 Блин : pancake.
— Ком: clod.
— Дым: smoke;
огонь : the fire.
Огня: (some) fire or light.
У него огонь в кабинете: there is light in his study.
Дайте мне огня: give me a light.
У него в кабинете натоплено: his study is heated.
10 Овощь Овощ : vegetable;
овощи: vegetables.
11 Ломоть хлеба: a piece of bread.
From ломать, to break (perf. сломать).
Он сломал себе ногу: he broke his leg.
12 Долог, from долгий, long (especially in duration).
— Длинный: long.
13 Двор: the yard, court;
трава: the grass;
дрова: firewood.
