Lesson number ninety three (#93)
     
  Ссора картёжников. (1) A quarrel of card-players
     
1 На маленьком вспотевшем офицере было написано полтораста рублей. (2) On (the account of) the small officer who was sweating there was written 150 roubles.
2 Нет, не везёт, сказал он, небрежно приготавливая новую карту. No, I'm not in luck, he said, carelessly preparing a new card.
     
3 Потрудитесь прислать, — сказал ему банкомёт .. (3) Take the trouble to pay in, the banker said to him
4 Позвольте завтра прислать, — ответил потный  офицер .. (4) Allow [me] to pay [send-in] to-morrow, said the sweating  [sweaty] officer.
5 Однако этак нельзя, - сказал банкомёт, положив карты :
— я бастую. (5)		 Indeed, it is not done [like that not possible], said the banker, putting down his cards ; I go on strike.
6 Этак нельзя, - прибавил он:
— мы на чистые, а не на мелок.		 It is not done, he added ; we were playing cash and not on trust [on chalk].
7 Что-ж, разве вы во мне сомневаетесь ?
Странно, право!		 What, do you really mistrust [in] me? Strange, indeed !
     
8 С кого прикажете получить (6) — пробормотал майор, From whom must I get [From whom do you order to receive]? grumbled the major.
9 сильно опьяневший к этому времени, и выигравший что-то рублей восемь. strongly intoxicated by this time and having won some 8 roubles.
     
10 Я прислал уже больше двадцати рублей, a выиграл — ничего не получаю. I have already paid in more than 20 roubles, and (when) I win [have won], I don't get anything.
11 Откуда же и я заплачу, - сказал банкомёт,
- когда на столе денег нет?		 What (should) I pay you from, said the banker, when there is no money on the table?
     
12 Я знать не хочу. - закричал майор, поднимаясь :
— я играю с вами, с честными людьми, а не с ними. (7)		 I won't hear [know] (of anything), cried out the major, getting up, I play with you, with honest people, and not with him [them].
13 Потный офицер вдруг разгорячился. The sweating officer suddenly got hot :
     
14 Я говорю, что заплачу завтра:
как же вы смеете (8) мне говорить дерзости?		 I say that I shall pay to-morrow ; how dare you tell me impertinent things?
15 Я говорю, что хочу!
Так честные люди не делают, вот что! кричал майор.		 I say what I want !
This is not done between honest people, that's all [here's what], cried the major.
16 Полноте, Фёдор Фёдорыч! заговорили все, удерживая майора. (9) Stop! Тh., Тh., (they) all interfered, holding back the major.
17 Но майор... вдруг вскочил и, шатаясь, направился к потному офицеру. But the major suddenly sprang up and, staggering, moved towards the perspiring officer.
18 Я дерзости говорю?
Кто постарше вас, 20 лет своему царю служит, — дерзости?
Ах ты, мальчишка! (10)		 I say impudent things !
I, who am your elder, who have served [serves] my czar 20 years, impudent things?

EXERCISE
1 Простите за нескромный (1) вопрос, a сколько может стоить такой портсигар (2) ? Excuse (me) for (my) indiscreet question, but how much can such a cigarette-case cost?
2 Цены я не знаю, я не сам его купил. I don't know the price, I did not buy it myself.
3 Кажется, чистое золото! и какой тяжёлый! It seems pure gold ! and how heavy l
4 Такие подарки и я хотел бы получать. Such presents I should like to receive (too) !
5 A это не подарок : я его получил в наследство (3) от покойного дедушки. But is it not a present ; I received it as an heirloom from my late grandfather.
6 Будь я (ou Если бы я был) на вашем месте, я бы его дал оценить. (4) If I were in your place, I should give it to appraise.

ADDITIONAL EXERCISE
1 Сколько у вас есть наличных? How much cash money have you?
2 Куда прикажете уложить ваше бельё? Where do you want [order] me to put away your linen?
3 Он уже пьяный; он уже опьянел. He is already drunk ; he has already got drunk.
4 Он был пьяным. He was drunk.
5 Он напился; он напивается очень скоро. He had drunk too much : he gets drunk very quickly.
6 Он любил кричать на служащих. He liked to shout at the servants.
7 Он закричал на меня без всякой причины. He began to shout at me without any cause.
8 Это не честно с вашей стороны. This is not honest of you [from your side].
9 Имею честь представиться. I have the honour to introduce myself.
10 Представление уже началось. The performance has already begun.

NOTES - ЗАМЕТКИ
1 Картёжник (from карта) : out and out card-player.
2 Пот : sweat.
Потение: perspiration.
Я весь в поту: I am all sweating (in sweat).
— Потеть (я потею, он потеет, они потеют) (imperf.);
вспотеть (perf.) : to sweat, perspire.
— Полтораста: сто пятьдесят - 150.
— Полтора рубля: 1 rouble 50.
3 Банкомёт: the banker (gaming).
Метать банк: to keep the bank.
Метать: кидать: бросать: to throw, cast.
- Банк: the bank (кредитное заведение).
Банкир: the banker.
— Банка: glass jar or pot.
Банка варения: pot of jam.
4 Потный : sweating (adject.) : вспотевший: "who had perspired".
5 Бастовать (imp.), забастовать (perf.) : to go on strike.
Забастовка: the strike.
Положив: having put; положа: putting (gerund).
6 Приказать: to order, give the order of,
is used for courtesy with the meaning of желать.
— Что прикажете? asks the shop-assistant.
Как прикажете : как вам угодно: As you like.
7 С ними: a plural of courtesy, an archaic form for : с ним.
8 Сметь: to dare.
Не смейте! : Don't you dare!
— Смелый: bold, brave.
9 Удержать (perf.), удерживать (imp.) : to keep back.
Удержаться, удерживаться: to keep from, abstain.
Я удерживаюсь от курения: I abstain from smoking.
10 К чему это служит? or simply : к чему это? What's the use, the good, of this?
Он служит своему хозяину: he serves his master (dative).

The prefix за often implies a beginning action.
Он кричал: he was crying out;
он закричал : he started crying out.
Я плакал: I was weeping;
я заплакал : I started weeping.
Оркестр играл военный марш: the band was playing a military march;
Оркестр заиграл военный марш: the bank struck up a military march.
