Lesson number ninety (#90)
     
  Где стоит наш полк? Where is [stands] our regiment?
     
1 Братья застали офицера перед грязным столом, The brothers found the officer before a dirty table,
     
2 на котором стоял стакан холодного чаю с папиросной золой, (1) on which stood a glass of cold tea with cigarette ash(es),
     
3 поднос с водкой и крошками сухой икры и хлеба, (2) a tray with vodka and crumbs of dry caviar and bread ;
4 в одной желтовато-грязной рубашке, (3) (dressed) only in a [in one] dirty-yellowish shirt ;
5 считающего на больших счётах огромную кучу ассигнаций.... (4) counting on a large abacus (plur.) a huge heap of assignations...
6 Офицер этот заведывал/заведовал обозом полка и продовольствием лошадей ... (5) This officer managed the equipment (instr.) of the regiment and the feeding of the horses.
7 Денег то, денег-то! сказал Козельцов 1-й, входя в палатку (6) (What a lot of) money I [money] I said Kozeltsov the elder (1st), on entering the tent,
     
8 и с невольной жадностью устремляя глаза на кучу ассигнаций : (7) and directing his look with unintentional greed on the heap of assignations :
9 Хоть бы половину взаймы дали, Василий Михайлыч! (8) If you lent me only half of it, Vassili Mikhailovitch !
     
10 Обозный офицер, как будто пойманный в воровстве, (9) The equipment officer, as if he had been surprised in the act of stealing,
11 весь покоробился, увидав гостя,
и собирая деньги, не поднимаясь, поклонился : (10)		 shrank up completely [all], on seeing the visitor [guest],
and gathering the money without [not] getting up, bowed.
     
12 Ох, коли бы мои были! Казённые, батюшка... (11) Ah, if it was (plur.) mine. (It belongs) to the state, old chap...
13 А кто это с вами? — сказал он, укладывал деньги в шкатулку, And who is that, with you? he said, putting the money in a casket,
     
14 которая стояла около него, и прямо глядя на Володю (12). which was [standing] beside him, and looking straight at V.
15 Это мой брат, из корпуса (13) приехал.
Да вот мы и заехали узнать у вас, где полк стоит.		 He's my brother, who has come from the (Military) School. So [yes here-is], we have called an you to know where the regiment is.
16 Садитесь, господа, — сказал он, вставая.
Выпить не хотите ли?..		 Sit down, gentlemen, he said, rising. Won't you have a drink?
17 Не мешает, Василий Михайлыч..
Так где наш полк стоит?		 It'd do no harm, Vass. Mikh.
So, where is our regiment?
18 Нынче у меня Зейфер был :
он рассказывал, что вчера перешли на пятый бастион.		 This evening. Z. has been here ; he told that yesterday they passed to the fifth bastion.
19 Наверное? (Is it) exact?
20 Коли я говорю, стало быть (14) верно;
a впрочем, чорт его знает!		 If I say (so), then it's exact,
but, however, the devil knows him !
21 Он и соврать не дорого возьмёт. (15) He lies easily enough. [does not take dear to lie].

ADDITIONAL EXERCISE
1 Я помню, как вы были одеты. I remember how you were dressed.
2 Погодите-ка, я сейчас вспомню. Wait a little, I will remember at once.
3 Я вам напоминаю, что сегодня седьмое апреля. I remind you that to-day is the 7th of April.
4 У меня память слабая: напомните мне, пожалуйста. I have a weak memory ; remind me, please.
5 Не поминайте лихом (1). No malice ! [Don't mention ill].
6 Я сохраняю (V. N. 3, leçon 98) добрую память о вас. I shall keep a good memory of you.
7 Вы должны были бы писать свои воспоминания. You should write your memories.
     
    Let us note :
  Одолжите мне ваш велосипед lend me your bicycle.
  Одолжите (or Дайте мне взаймы) сто рублей Lend me 100 roubles.
  Не поминайте лихом Don't bear malice against me (no malice)!
  Умеете ли вы считать на счётах? Can you count with an abacus?
  У неё совсем крошечная собачонка She has a quite tiny doggie.
  Собирайтесь поскорее, мы ждём вас Get ready quick, we wait for you.
  Он собирался уехать заграницу He was preparing to go abroad.
 

NOTES - ЗАМЕТКИ
1 Зола (hard L!) : ash.
Листик or листок папиросной бумаги: a cigarette paper.
Листок бумаги: a sheet of paper.
2 Крошка: a crumb;
крошечка: a very little bit ;
крошечный: tiny.
3 В одной рубашке: in (one's) shirt sleeves;
в одних кальсонах: in (one's) pants.
Один is one or alone.
— Я один: I am alone. |
Вы одни? : Are you alone? (N. 7).
4 Считающего and not считающий, since it is the accusative (living beings), governed by застал, at the beginning of the sentence.
— Счёты (рluг.) : the abacus (counting frame), much used in Russia.
Куча: груда: the heap.
5 Заведывать/Заведовать (чем?, чем-то) : to manage (something).
— Заведение : establishment, firm.
- Обоз : train.
6 Иванов 1й (первый), Иванов 2й (второй) : Ivanov the elder (старший) ; Ivanov the younger (младший).
This numbering is used in schools and regiments.
- Палата: a hospital room or Chamber;
Палата депутатов: Chamber of Deputies.
Торговая палата: Chamber of Commerce.
Палатка: a tent.
7 Жадный, жадность: greedy, greed.
— Устремляя: обращая.
8 Дать, взять в займы: to lend, barrow money.
Одолжить: to lend for a time.
Взаимный: mutual.
Взамен: in exchange for.
— Михайлыч: Михайлович.
9 Вор : thief ;
воровать (он ворует) :
красть, украсть: to steal, pilfer.
— Воровство: petty theft.
Кража: theft.
Поймать: to catch (N. 8).
10 Собирать (imp.), собрать (perf.) : to gather, collect, assemble.
- Собрание: assembly.
Собрание картин: a collection of pictures.
Собираться: to get ready or to assemble.
Куда вы собираетесь? : Where are you preparing (intending) to go?
— Толпа собралась на площади: the crowd has assembled on the common (square).
11 Коли: popular for если.
Казённый: of the Treasury, of the state.
Казна: the Treasury:
казначеи: treasurer, cashier (treasure : сокровище).
— Батюшка: father or priest. Here : old chap.
12 Володя: familiar for Владимир. (N. 9).
13 Дипломатический корпус: Diplomatic body.
Кадетский корпус: formerly the Cadet-Corps : The Military School.
14 Стало быть: so, therefore.
15 Врать (imp.), соврать (imp.) : to lie, fib. (N. 10).
