  За перегородкой. Behind the partition
     
1 За досчатой перегородкой, отделявшей комнатку Андрея Николаевича от хозяйского помещения, (1) Behind the board partition dividing the little bedroom of Andrew N. from the host's lodgings,
2 послышался голос, глухо и неторопливо бурчавший (2): was heard a voice, grumbling low and slowly :
     
3 Дело вот в чём - две копейки потерял. Here's what it is about [in what the affair is], I lost 2 kopecks.
4 Да брось ты их, Фёдор Иванович, умолял женский голос. Now you leave them alone (yes, throw them, you] Th. Iv., a feminine voice was imploring.
5 Не могу. I can't.
6 Под тяжёлыми шагами заскрипели половицы (3), Under heavy steps, the floor boards creaked
7 стукнула упавшая табуретка (4). and a stool knocked as it fell.
     
8 Хозяин Андрея Николаевича, пекарь, когда бывал пьян, (5) The host of And. N., a baker, when he was drunk,
9 постоянно терял что-нибудь, и не успокаивался, пока не находил. (б) was always losing something and did not grow quiet again until he had found it.
     
10 Чаще всего он терял какие-то (7) две копейки, Oftenest of all, he would lose I don't know what 2 kopecks,
11 и Андрей Николаевич сомневался (8), and And. Nic. doubted
     
12 были ли они когда-нибудь в действительности. (if) they had ever existed [had they been anywhen in reality].
13 Жена давала (9) ему свои две копейки, His wife would give him 2 kopecks of hers,
     
14 говоря, что это потерянные, saying that these [this] (were) the lost (ones) ;
15 но Фёдор Иванович не верил, but Theod. Iv. would not believe (it),
16 и приходилось перерывать всю комнату (10). and it was necessary to ransack all the room.
17 Вздохнув при мысли о глупости человеческой, (11) Sighing at the thought of human stupidity,
18 Андрей Николаевич снова принялся за работу. And. N. set to work again.

УПРАЖНЕНИЕ

EXERCISE
1 Вот не везёт! Мне калоши переменили! Hard luck ! They changed my galoshes.
2 Не волнуйтесь, это дело обычное;
ваших калош нет, возьмите чужие.		 Don't get excited; it's a normal thing [affair ; your galoshes (are) not (here)? Take (same) others [alien].
3 Но они были совсем новые, a здесь остались только поношенные. But they were all new, and there remain only worn out (ones).
4 Ничего, в другой раз найдёте получше. It's nothing ; another time you will find better (ones).
5 Вам легко говорить, a пока... Easy for you to say, but meanwhile...
6 Чорт возьми!
и мои калоши тоже исчезли!
Какое безобразие! Скандал! 		The devil take (them) !
And my galoshes too have disappeared!
It's revolting [what deformity] ! (It's a) scandal !
7 Ха-ха-ха! Ha, ha, ha... !
  (зимой приходится надевать резиновые (резина : rubber) калоши сверх обуви (обувь : footwear), против холода.
Их оставляют в передней (hall) дома, и часто бывает что они переменены.)		 (In winter people must put on rubber galoshes over their shoes, against the cold.
They are left in the hall of the house, and it often happens that they are changed).

ADDITIONAL EXERCISE
1 Я считаю; он считает;
я сосчитаю, он сосчитает,
я сочту, он сочтёт. 		I count, he counts ; I shall count, he will count.

я займусь этим, вы займётесь. 		I interest myself in (or I study) ; I shall interest myself in this ; you will interest yourself.

я полюблю, он полюбит		 I like (or love), you like ; I shall like, he will like.
9 Я думаю, мы думаем;
я подумаю, вы подумаете;
подумайте обо мне. 		I think, we think ; I shall think, you will think ; think of me.
10 Я повторяю, он повторяет;
я повторю, вы повторите;
повторите за мной !		 I repeat, he repeats ; I shall repeat, you will repeat ; repeat after me!
11 Я предлагаю;
я предложу, мы предложим;
предложите ему,
предложите ему. 		I propose; I shall propose, we shall propose;
you will propose (to) him,
propose (to) him.
12 Я показываю,
я покажу, вы покажете;
покажите мне.		 I show, I shall show you will show; show me.
     
    Let us note
  Он не допил своего стакана.
Даром только сахар пропал 		He has not finished to drink his glass.
The sugar has been lost for nothing.
  Недаром я вас предупредил It's not for nothing that I warned you.
  Я не узнал вашего голоса I had not recognized your voice.
  Постучите в дверь Knock at the door.
  Пора приняться/приняться за работу It's time to set to work.
 

NOTES - ЗАМЕТКИ
1 Досчатый, from доска: the plank, board.
— Отделять от...: to divide from...
— Хозяин, хозяйка: the host (or employer), the mistress;
хозяйский: of the master.
— Помещение: (root : место) : place, premises.
2 Глухой: deaf;
глухонемой: deaf and dumb;
слепой: blind.
— Неторопливо: медленно.
— Бурчать: ворчать.
3 Заскрипеть, perf. of скрипеть, to grate, creak;
половица, from пол, the floor.
4 Падать (imp.), упасть (perf.) :
я падаю, I fall;
я упал, I fell.
5 Пекарь: булочник: baker.
— Печь, печка: oven or stove.
Он лежал на печи: he was lying on the stove (the large brick stove of the Russian isbas).
— Когда бывал пьян: бывал instead of был indicates that it often happened to him.
Пьян or пьяным.
6 The perfective would be : не упокоился пока не нашёл (preterite).
7 Какой-то человек: I don't know what man.
8 Я в этом сомневаюсь: I doubt it.
- Без сомнения: without (any) doubt.
9 Давала and not дала to mark the habit.
— Свои and not его: hers (subject. : she) and not his.
10 Перерывать (imp.), перерыть (perf.) : 1) to search. 2) to dig.
— Перерывать is also the imperfective of перервать, to interrupt.
— Перерыв: interruption, spell, pause (at work), break (at school).
— Я перерыл все карманы: I searched all my pockets.
- Приходите во время перерыва: Come at the time of the spell.
— To interrupt (when speaking): перебить.
11 Мысль: thought ;
мысленно: mentally, in thought.
But думать is the usual word for : to think, while мыслить is rather : to meditate.
