УРОК НОМЕР ВОСЕМЬДЕСЯТ СЕДЬМОЙ (№87)

Lesson number eighty seven (#87)
     
  В парикмахерской (1) At the hair-dresser's shop
     
1 ... Парикмахер поправил на груди посетителя грязную простынку, (2) The hairdresser arranged [repaired] before [on the breast of] the customer [visitor] a (bit of) dirty linen,
2 заткнул её пальцами за ворот я крикнул: (3) thrust it with his fingers behind the collar and shouted :
     
3 Мальчик, воды! (4) Boy! water l
4 Посетитель, рассматривавший в зеркало свою физиономию, The customer [visitor] having examined his face in the mirror,
5 заметил, что у него на подбородке прибавился (5) ещё один прыщик, noticed that he had on the chin one more pimple [had added itself],
6 и с неудовольствием отвёл глаза, and with discontent turned away his eyes,
7 попадавшие попавшие прямо на худую маленькую ручонку, (6) that fell [falling] straight on a thin little hand,
     
8 которая откуда-то со стороны протягивалась к подзеркальнику which was held from somewhere on the side towards the shelf of the [under]mirror,
9 и ставила жестянку с горячей водой .. (7) and was putting down a tin vessel full of [with] hot water...
     
10 Вот, погоди! (8) Wait а little ! [here's wait].
11 Это значило, что мальчик недостаточно быстро подал воду, That meant that the boy had not brought the water quickly enough,
     
12 и его ждёт наказание. (9) and that a punishment awaited [awaits] him.
13 Так их и следует, подумал посетитель, serves them right [Thus to them it must (be done)], thought the customer,
     
14 кривя голову на бок, (10) twisting his head aside,
15 пока туповатая бритва с неприятным скрипом (11) while the razor, rather blunt, with an unpleasant grating (noise)
16 снимала мыльную пену и жёсткую щетину бороды ... (12) took off the soapy foam and the stiff hairs of his beard...
17 Мальчик, на которого чаще всего кричали, назывался Петькой (13) The boy at whom they cried out oftenest of all was called Pete,
18 и был самым маленьким из всех служащих в заведении. and was the smallest of all the (people) employed in the shop.

EXERCISE
1 У меня оторвалась пуговица;
нет ли у вас английской булавки?		 A button got wrenched from [with] me (I lost a button).
Have you not a safety [English] pin?
2 Погодите минуточку, я вам её пришью;
вот иголка и нитка. 		Walt a little minute, I shall sew it (fem.) for you ;
here are a needle and thread.
3 Но пуговицы то у меня нету, она исчезла. But I have not the button ; it has disappeared.
4 Посмотрите, подходит ли одна из этих?
Сами выбирайте. 		Look ; will one of these do?
Choose yourself.
5 Какие у вас чудные пуговицы!
Вот эта зелёная мне больше всех нравится.		 What wonderful buttons you have !
Here is this green one (which) pleases me most of all.
6 Но у вас на куртке пуговицы серые! But you have grey buttons on your coat !
7 Ничего; пусть и зелёная будет, для разнообразия! It does not matter [nothing !] ; let there be [and] a green one for a change! (diversity).
8 Однако, чудак вы этакий. (1) Now, you ! what a queer fellow you are !

19 Я скучаю; я проскучаю. I feel dull ; I shall feel dull.
20 Я спешу; я поспешу. I hurry ; I shall hurry.
21 Я гуляю ; я погуляю. I walk about ; I shall walk about.
22 Я сижу; я посижу. I sit (am sitting) ; I shall stay [sit].

  Она поправляет себе причёску She arranges her headdress.
  Пословица (proverb) :

NOTES - ЗАМЕТКИ
1 Парикмахер, from German «Perückenmacher»: "wig-maker" : hairdresser.
Парикмахерская: hairdresser's shop.
2 Простыня: bed-sheet.
Простынка: small sheet, (bit of) linen.
3 Заткнуть (perf.), затыкать (imp.) : to shut, stop, to thrust into something.
Заткнуть рот кому-нибудь: to gag somebody.
— Ворот, воротник: collar (in clothes).
— Not to be mistaken for ворот, genit. plural of ворота, the gate.
— Шея: the neck.
4 Мальчик: (young) boy.
To call the waiter in a cafe: etc..., one said formerly :
Человек! Now : Товарищ!
5 Подбородок: the chin;
борода: the beard;
бородатый: bearded.
— Ус : moustache (rather used in the plur. : усы) ;
усатый: having a moustache.
— Прибавить: to add. (N. 3).
6 Худой: thin, lean, or wicked, bad (хуже, worse;
самый худший or хуже всего: the worst).
Нет худа без добра: no evil without good; it's an ill wind that blows nobody good.
— Рука: the hand (or arm) ;
ручка: little hand (or handle, or penholder.);
ручонка: a tiny hand.
- Handcuffs: ручные кандалы, наручники.
7 Жесть (masc.) : tin;
жестяной: (made of) tin.
Жестянка: tin utensil.
Горячий: hot, burning;
горячка: burning fever.
8 Погодить: to wait (intransitive).
Я погожу здесь: I shall wait here.
- Подождите меня: wait for me.
9 Наказать: я накажу, он накажет, они накажут, (perf.) : to punish.
Наказывать, я наказываю, (imp.).
Он наказан: he is punished.
10 Кривить: to twist, lean on the side;
кривой: wry.
— Кривоглазый or кривой: one-eyed.
Бок: the side :
он носит шляпу набок: he wears his hat awry.
Идти боком: to walk sideways, like a crab.
11 Тупой: blunt, obtuse.
— The ending -оватый corresponds to the English : -ish;
whitish : беловатый;
blackish : черноватый;
reddish: красноватый;
жёлтый: yellow,
желтоватый: yellowish;
зелёный: green,
зеленоватый: greenish ;
синий or голубой, blue,
синеватый or голубоватый: bluish;
серый: grey,
сероватый: greyish.
— Скрип: a grating (noise) ;
скрипка: the violin;
скрипач: the fiddler.
12 Жёсткий: rude, hardy:
жестокий: cruel.
- Щетина, stiff hairs, bristles.
Щётка: a brush.
Чистить щёткой: to brush.
13 Чаще: comparative of часто, often.
— The oftenest: чаще всего.
Петькой: instrum. of Петька, diminutive of Пётр: Peter.
14 Дача: holiday cottage.
На даче: in the country.
