УРОК НОМЕР ВОСЕМЬДЕСЯТ ШЕСТОЙ (№86)

Lesson number eighty six (#86)
     
  Бедный студент. The poor student
     
1 Сергей Петрович был студент третьего курса естественного факультета. (1) Serge Petrovitch was a student in the 3rd year [class] of the Faculty of Sciences (Natural Sciences).
2 В Смоленске у него жили родители, братья и сёстры, In Smolensk, he had [with him lived] his, parents, brothers and sisters,
     
3 из которых одни были старше его, другие моложе. some of whom were older than he, some [others] younger.
4 Существовать Сергею Петровичу приходилось (2) на пятнадцать рублей в месяц, Serge Petr. had to keep himself [Exist to S.P. must] with [on] 15 roubles [in] a month.
5 и этого ему хватало, так как он обедал бесплатно в студенческой столовой, (3) and that sufficed him (gen.), for [so as] he dined for nothing at the students dining-haft,
6 не курил и водки пил мало. did not smoke and drank little vodka.
7 Когда его друг Новиков ещё не уезжал, они пили очень много, While his friend Novikov had not yet gone away, they would drink very much,
     
8 но это ничего не стоило Сергею Петровичу, but it (had) cost nothing to S. P.,
9 потому что все расходы (4) по пьянству брал на себя Новиков, because all the expenses for drinking [drunkenness] were assumed by N. [took upon himself N.],
     
10 у которого постоянно имелись (5) дорогие уроки по языкам. who had constantly well paid [dear] lessons in languages.
11 Раз, по вине того же Новикова, любившего в пьяном виде (6) Once, by that same N.'s fault, who liked [liking], when he was drunk [in drunken aspect],
     
12 сидеть (7) на деревьях бульвара, куда влезал за ним и Сергей Петрович, to perch [sit] on the trees of the avenue, where had climbed after him [and] S. P. too,
13 мировой судья приговорил обоих товарищей (8) the justice of the peace condemned both friends
     
14 к десяти рублям штрафа, и штраф уплатил Новиков. to a 10 roubles fine, and N. paid out the fine.
15 При простоте товарищеских отношений In (view of) the simplicity of the relations of comradeship,
16 это было вполне естественно this was absolutely [fully] natural.
17 и ни в ком не возбуждало (9) сомнений, кроме самого Сергея Петровича. and awoke no scruple [doubt] in anybody, except S. P. himself.
18 Но отсутствие денег было фактом, (10) But the absence of money was a fact
19 с которым приходилось мириться .. (11) with which one had to put up [make peace].

EXERCISE
1 Что с вами, — вам нездоровится? What's the matter with you, you're not well?
2 Ничего, я совсем здоров, не беспокойтесь. It's nothing, I am quite well, don't worry.
3 A у вас вид такой задумчивый, даже мрачный .. But you look so thoughtful, even gloomy.
4 Правду говоря, мне скучно; вот и всё .. To speak the truth, I feel dull ; that's all.
5 Сознаюсь, что здесь не особенно весело. I own that it is not particularly cheerful here.
6 Надоела мне эта однообразная жизнь,
хочется перемены какой-нибудь, хоть бы напиться здорово. 		I have enough [has bored me] of this monotonous life,
I want [is wanted] some change, were it to get drunk soundly.
7 У вас наверно тоска (1) по родине;
давно ли вы получили письмо от ваших (or своих)? 		You surely have home- sickness ; is it long since you received a letter from your[s] people?
8 От них ни слова; как будто бы все умерли, или меня забыли. Not a word from them ; as if they were all dead, or had forgotten me.
9 Что вы! не надо так говорить!
Я чувствую, что вы уже завтра получите известия.		 What (do) you (say)?
You must not speak like that !
I feel that even [already] tomorrow you'll receive news.
  ДОБАВОЧНОЕ УПРАЖНЕНИЕ

ADDITIONAL EXERCISE
1 Не существует другого такого дурака. There does not exist another such fool.
2 Придётся нам сойти c вагона. We shall have to step down from the carriage.
3 Мне пришлось идти (or сделать) всю дорогу пешком. I had to walk all the way.
4 Хлеба у нас не хватает (хватит) для всех. We have not (shall not have) enough bread for all.
5 Хватайте его за ноги. Catch him by the feet.
6 Кошка захватила птицу на лету (1). The cat caught a bird on the wing [flight].
7 Не хватайтесь за всё руками. Don't touch [grab at] everything with your hands.
9 Зачем покупать газету,
когда вы можете её читать даром (or бесплатно).		 Why buy the paper, when you can read it for nothing (or free).
     
    Let us pin up :
  Даром ничего не делается One does nothing for nothing.
  Вход безплатный бесплатный Free admittance.
  Я беру (возьму) все расходы на себя I take (shall take) all the expenses on myself.
  В кассе не имеется больше денег There is no more money in the cash-box.
  Меня приговорили к штрафу в десять рублей
(or Меня приговорили к десяти рублям штрафа) 		They condemned me to a ten roubles fine.
 

NOTES - ЗАМЕТКИ
1 Естественный : natural (from есть, is).
Факультет: the Faculty.
2 Ему приходилось : ему надо было.
- Мне приходится сидеть дома: мне надо сидеть дома: I must stay at home
— Мне придётся начать снова: мне надо будет начать снова: I shall have to begin again.
3 Хватать with the meaning of to suffice, rules the genitive.
— Времени у вас хватает? : Have you enough time?
— Столовая: dining-room, from стол, table.
— Бесплатно (from платить , to pay), or даром, for nothing, (as) a gift
(дар : gift; подарок : present).
4 Расходы: траты: expenses.
Тратить or расходовать: to spend.
5 У него имеются большие возможности: he has great possibilities.
— У меня не имелось никаких средств: I had no resources.
6 Вина : the fault (guiltiness).
Это не по моей вине: я в этом не виноват: it is not my fault.
— Вид: sight or air, look.
У него дурацкий вид: he looks stupid.
— Отсюда прекрасный вид: From here, the sight is splendid.
7 Голубь сидит на крыше: a pigeon is sitting on the roof.
8 Мир: 1) peace; 2) the universe.
— Мировая (or всемирная) революция: the world revolution.
— Мирные переговоры: peace negotiations.
— Суд: the tribunal;
судить : to judge.
Приговорить : to condemn.
Оправдать: to acquit
(Это правда: it's the truth).
9 Возбудить, возбуждать : to wake (figur.), to arouse, bring on.
(будить, разбудить: to awake (somebody).
10 В моём отсутствии: без меня: in my absence.
— В моём присутствии: при мне: in my presence.
- Это факт: It's a fact.
Это было фактом: it was a fact.
11 Мириться: from мир (imp.),
помириться (perf.) : to make peace, make it up with or to put up with, to resign oneself to.
   
  (1) Тоска : sadness, the blues.
  (1) Птица : the bird.
Летать : to fly.
Улетать: to fly away.
