УРОК НОМЕР ВОСЕМЬДЕСЯТ ДВА (№82)

Lesson number eighty two (#82)
     
  На разведке (1) Reconnoitering [On reconnaissance]
     
1 Товарищ сержант, на пригорке через дорогу под ногами — провод. (2) Comrade sergeant, on the hill over [through] the way there is a wire underfoot.
2 Сержант идёт вперёд. The sergeant goes forward.
     
3 Он ощупывает провод рукою и раздумывает (3) : He feels the wire with his hand and hesitates :
4 или по проводу влево или вправо? (Must one) follow the wire [go along the wire] to the left or to the right?
5 Но оказывается (4), что слева провод уходит в топкое болото. But it happens that, on the left the wire disappears into а muddy swamp.
6 Нога вязнет, и сапог с трудом выдирается из липкой грязи. (5) The foot gets bogged and one pulls out one's boot [the boot is pulled] with difficulty from the clammy mud.
7 Вправо то же самое. On the right it is the same.
     
8 К сержанту подходит Мельчаков, вынимает нож и предлагает : (6) Meltchakov approaches the sergeant, takes out his knife and proposes :
9 - Разрешите, товарищ сержант, я провод перережу (7). - Allow me, comrade sergeant, I shall cut the wire.
     
10 Сержант останавливает Мельчакова. The sergeant stops Meltchakov.
11 Он хмурится, потом хватает провод, наматывает его He gets sulky, then seizes the wire, winds it
     
12 на ножны штыка (8) и с силой тянет. Провод поддаётся (N. 7). round [on] the scabbard of his bayonet, and pulls with force. The wire gives way.
13 В болоте что-то чавкает.
И вот на дорогу выползает (9) тяжёлый камень.		 In the marshes, something swashes.
And here creeps out a heavy stone upon the road.
     
14 Сержант торжествует : (10)
"Ага, значит провод фальшивый!"		 The sergeant triumphs.
"Ha, ha ! (This) means the wire was sham!"
15 Так и есть : на другом конце провода привязан кусок железной рессоры. (11) So (it) [and] is ; and at the other end of the wire is attached а bit of iron spring.
16 "Перережу, перережу!", передразнивает сержант Мельчакова. (12) "I shall cut it, I shall cut it", the sergeant mocks Meltchakov.
17 "Товарищ сержант, доношу, (13) что телефонную связь "Comrade sergeant, I report that (I have destroyed) a telephonic connection
18 между двумя батальонами болотных лягушек уничтожил. (14) between two battalions of swamp frogs [I have destroyed]
19 Очень ты, Мельчаков, на всё тороплив. You, Meltchakov, you are too quick [hurry] for everything.
20 Иди вперёд. Ищи.
Где-нибудь неподалёку (15) туг есть настоящий провод."		 Go forward. Look out.
Somewhere not far from here, there is a genuine wire."

EXERCISE
1 Мне выдернули зуб. I had a tooth pulled out.
2 Я должен был идти в баню сегодня утром,
но я раздумал в последнюю минуту.		 I was to go to the bath this morning, but I changed my mind at the last minute.
3 Он предложил нам нас довезти в своём автомобиле. He proposed to us to drive us in his car.
4 Что вы именно предлагаете? What do you propose exactly?
5 Я не могу принять вашего предложения. I cannot accept your proposal.
6 Я так неловок, (1) что я режусь даже безопасной бритвой. I am so awkward that I cut myself even with a safety razor.
7 Остерегайтесь этого человека: он шпик (2); он на всех доносит. Beware of this man : he is a sneak ; he reports on everybody.
8 Я хотел ему подарить портсигар,
но оказывается, что он не курильщик (ог не курит).		 I wanted to offer him a cigarette-case,
but it happens that he is not a smoker.

ADDITIONAL EXERCISE
1 Он вынимает нож из кармана. He takes (his) knife out of (his) pocket.
2 Он вынул платок из рукава (1). He took (a) handkerchief out of (his) sleeve.
3 Пока он вынимал штык из раны (2) ... While he was taking (his) bayonet from the wound...
4 Вот что я предлагал. Here's what I was proposing.
5 Вот что я предложил. Here's what I (have) proposed.
6 Это не разрешено, это запрещено. It's not allowed, it's forbidden.
7 Что вы хмуритесь What do you sulk (for)?
8 Я не хмурюсь. I don't sulk.
9 Он ползает на животе (3). He creeps on (his) belly.
10 Он ползёт в канаве. He creeps in the ditch.
  Он поползёт в канаве. He will creep in the ditch.
11 Я его привяжу верёвкой. (4) I shall tie him with a rope.
12 Я его привязываю на цепь. (цепь : chain) I tie him on a chain.
  Я его привязываю цепью. I tie him with/by a chain.
13 Он крепко привязан к дереву. He is strongly tied to the (or a) tree.
14 Она всё время вяжет. She is always knitting.
15 Не дразните собак. Don't tease the dog.
16 Она дразнит брата. She teases (her) brother.
17 Она его больше не раздразнит. She will tease him no more.
18 Он тянет / он потянет за верёвку. He pulls, he will pull on the rope.
     
    Let us see again :
  Я раздумал I changed my mind.
  Надо выдернуть этот зуб This tooth must be pulled out.
  Так и есть So it is.
  Не дразните животных : Don't tease (worry) the animals.
  Не торопитесь ; вы успеете : Don't hurry; you will have time.
 

NOTES - ЗАМЕТКИ
1 Разведка : reconnaissance, patrol;
разведчик: a scout.
2 Пригорок: a hill, hillock, from гора, mountain;
Идти в гору: to go uphill.
- Провод: conducting wire (проводить: to conduct);
thread (cotton) is : нить, нитка;
iron wire : проволока [проволка].
3 Щупать (imp.) пульс: to feel the pulse;
пощупать, ощупать (perf.), пощупывать, ощупывать (imperf.) : to fell, finger.
- Раздумать (perf.): to change one's mind;
раздумывать (imperf:) : to hesitate.
4 Оказаться (perf.), оказываться (imp.) : to happen, turn out to be.
Оказалось, что...: it happened that...
Оказывается, что...: it happens that...
Оказать помощь: to bring help;
оказать услугу: to render a service.
5 Выдирать (imp.), выдрать (perf.), выдернуть (perf.) all express the idea of pulling out, wrenching out.
Липкая грязь: clammy mud.

6 Подходить, вынимать, предлагать, have for perfectives :
подойти, вынуть, предложить, which would be here :
подойдёт, вынет, предложит.
7 Резать (imp.), нарезать, порезать (perf.) : to cut;
отрезать, перерезать: to sever;
зарезать: to cut the throat of.
- Я режу, он режет.
8 Нож : knife;
ножницы: scissors;
ножны : scabbard.
— Штык: bayonet.
В штыки!: Bayonets!
9 Чавкать: to make a smacking noise while eating, to gobble.
Ползать ог ползти (perf.) : to creep.
10 Торжество : 1) triumph. 2) Festival, celebration  
Октябрьские торжества: The festivals for the October Revolution.
— Торжественно: solemnly.
11 Рессора: a spring (of a vehicle) ;
пружина: a spring (generally).
12 Дразнить (imp.) : to tease.
Я дразню, он дразнит, они дразнят.
Передразнить (perf.), to mock (laughingly), to ape it.
13 Доносить (imp.)
(я доношу, он доносит, они доносят),
донести (perf.).
(я донесу, он донесёт, они донесут) :
to report, make a report, or to denounce.
Шпик на него донёс: a sneak denounced [reported on] him.

- Уничтожить (рerf.), уничтожать (imp.) : to annihilate, exterminate
(from ничто, nothing).

— Торопливый: in a hurry.
Торопиться: to hurry.
Я тороплюсь, вы торопитесь, они торопятся.
