  Земляки (Продолжение) Compatriots (continued)
     
1 Все головы разом придвинулись вплотную (1) к радиоприёмнику, All heads at once moved close to the radio-set,
2 кто на коленях, кто на корточках, some [who] on (their) knees, some [who] squatting,
     
3 не хотели упустить ни одного слова. they would not let escape one word.
4 Лица стали серьёзными и взволнованными. (2) (Their) faces became serious and moved.
5 Три года не слышали. (For) three years (they) had not heard.
6 Родина осталась далеко, далеко. Their mother country had remained far, far.
7 И вдруг через фронт, через Германию, And suddenly, over [through] the front, over Germany
     
8 дошёл этот ясный твёрдый голос из сердца страны прямо в сердца людей. had come this clear and firm voice, from the heart of their country, straight into people's hearts.
9 "От Советского Информбюро ... оперативная сводка ... за ... июля...
в течение (3) июля ... войска ... фронта."		 "From the Soviet Information bureau... summary of the operations for... of July...
in the course of July the troops... of the front."
     
10 Как раз был победный день, как и все почти дни тогда, Precisely it was a victorious day, as [and] almost every [all] dау[s] then,
11 и мы.. услышали обычную (4) для меня и необычную для них фразу : and we heard the phrase, customary for me, and unusual for them :
     
12 "В ознаменование одержанной победы, столица нашей родины Москва
салютует доблестным войскам... (5)"		 "In celebration of the victory won, the capital of our country, Moscow, salutes our valiant troops..."
13 И в означенное время послышались грохоты салютов, то отдалённых, то близких... (6) And at the appointed moment was heard the rumble[s] of the salutes, now remote, now near...
     
14 Потом мы прослушали гимн Советского Союза, которого они ещё не знали, (7) Then, we listened to the Hymn of the soviet Union, which they did not know yet,
15 и я сказал им его слова. Наступило молчание. (8) and I told them the words of it. There fell [advanced] a silence.
16 Все трое смотрели перед собой, как глядят наверно только в будущее ... All three looked in front of them, as one surely only looks towards the future...
17 Во время оккупации мы часто прославляли (9) это замечательное изобретение - радио, In the time of the occupation, we had often glorified this remarkable invention — the radio.
18 и когда мой приёмник портился (10), я готов был отдать всё на свете, And when my radio-set went wrong, I was ready to give (up) everything in the world,
19 чтобы поскорее выйти из той арктической ночи, to get out more quickly of this arctic night
20 в которую мы тогда погружались (11). in which we were then sinking.

EXERCISE
1 Он стал на колени передо мною. He knelt down before me.
2 Придвиньте ваш стул поближе к столу. Draw your chair nearer [to[ the table.
3 Не волнуйтесь напрасно : я уверен, что всё наладится. Do not fret for nothing ; I am sure that all will become right.
4 Ладно, я постараюсь быть (or оставаться) спокойным. All right, I shall try to keep calm.
5 Это здешний обычай. It is a local custom.
6 Извините, это у меня скверная привычка. Excuse me, it is a bad habit with me.
7 Я не хочу нарушить ваших обыкновений I will not disturb your habits.
8 Он много пишет, но только бумагу портит. He writes much, but he only spoils paper.
9 Он ничего не слышит, когда он погружён в чтение (accusative). He hears nothing when he is deep [sunk] in reading.

ADDITIONAL EXERCISE
1 Придвиньте-ка (Отодвиньте-ка) это кресло. Do bring near (do move away) this easy-chair.
2 Подойдите поближе ко мне. Come nearer to me.
3 Я подошёл к двери. I drew near the door.
4 Рабочие волновалась. The workmen were fretting.
5 Рабочие взволновались. The workmen were getting excited.
6 Волны доходили мне по колено. The waves came up to my knee(s).
7 Запрещено (ог запрещается) ходить по траве. It is forbidden to walk on the grass.
8 Разрешено ли курить в зале? Is it allowed to smoke in the room?
9 Она обыкновенно молчала. She would usually keep silent.
10 Вдруг она замолчала. Suddenly she was silent.
11 Мои часы испортились. My watch has gone out of order.
12 Все его игрушки уже испорчены. All his toys are already spoilt.
     
    For to-day
  Не портите себе кровь напрасно Don't make bad blood for nothing.
  Тише! Молчать! Silence! Keep silent!
  Курить запрещено (оr запрещается) Smoking forbidden
  Можно у вас спросить разрешения...? May one ask you for permission...?
  Всё наладится со временем All will become right with time.
  Всё в конце концов налаживается All becomes right in the end of ends.
 

NOTES - ЗАМЕТКИ
1 Двинуть : to move, stir (S. N. 6).
Вплотную, from плотный: compact, dense.
Плотник: the carpenter.
— Колено: the knee.
2 Серьёзными, взволнованными, instrumental after стать, to become, to turn.
3 Течение, course.
Течь, to flow.
У неё кровь течёт из носу [износу] / из носа: Her nose bleeds. (кровь: blood).
С меня течёт пот: Sweat streams from me.
(Пот: sweat; потеть, я потею, он потеет, они потеют, to sweat).
Текущий месяц: the current month;
текущие дела: the affairs in hand.
4 Обыкновенный, обычный: ordinary, usual, customary.
- Обыкновение, привычка, habit.
Обычай: a custom.
Let us recall :
Привычка: habit, getting used;
привыкать (imp.), привыкнуть (perf.) : to get used.
Я уже привык: I have got used already.
5 Ознаменовать: to signalize - to put a title onto, to mark as to celebrate.
Знаменитый учёный: a celebrated scientist.
— Знамя (neuter) : the flag.
— Одержать победу: to win the victory.
(Держать (imp.), подержать (perf.) : to hold).
— Салютовать: to fire a salute or a salute (of/to a soldier).
— Наши доблестные войска: our valiant troops
(Войска: troops; война: war).
6 Означенный, root знак, the sign, mark.
- Грохот, грохотание: crash, rumble.
Гром: thunder.
Гром гремит: it thunders.
- Отдалённый: remote (далёкий: distant; далеко: far).
7 Которого, genitive because of the subsequent negation.
8 Молчать, я молчу, он молчит, они молчат (imp.),
замолчать (perf.) : to keep silent.
Молчание: silence (absence of words);
тишина (from тихий, still) : silence, stillness.
Silence! : Тише! or Молчать!
9 Прославлять : to glorify;
слава: glory;
славный: glorious or nice.
Слава Богу: Thank God.
10 Портить (imp.), испортить (perf.)
(я порчу, он портит, они портят): to waste, spoil, put out of order.
Он портит себе кровь: He worries.
— Замок испорчен: the lock is out of order.
Мясо испортилось: the meat has got spoiled.
11 Груз: load, cargo.
Грузить: to load ;
нагруженный, гружёный: loaded;
погрузиться (perf.), погружаться (imp.) : to sink.
— Грузовик: a motor-lorry.
Грузовой пароход: a cargo-boat.
