  Земляки (Продолжение). Compatriots (Continued)
     
1 Все трое разом остановились и обернулись. (1) All the three at once stopped and turned back;.
2 Вы — русские?
— A вы сами что же, русский будете?		 You are Russians?
- And you yourself, then [what] you are [will be] Russian?
     
3 Да, я русский, давно уже тут живу, но русским (2) остался. Yes I am Russian ; I have lived here [live here already] a long time, but I have remained Russian.
4 Вот здесь, недалеко, на мельнице работаю ... (3) It is [here is] here, not far, at the mill (that) I work.
5 Ну, a как же вы узнали, что мы - русские ? Now, and how did you recognize that we are Russians?
6 Я русских вообще за версту вижу и без ошибки (4) распознаю. The Russians, generally, I see them from a verst, and I identify them without mistake.
7 Я в вас и не сомневался.
— Как это так вы определяете, по какому признаку? (5)		 And I had no doubt about [in] you.
— How is it that you (can) distinguish, from what sign?
     
8 Да по всему.
Вот вы, например, запустили брюки (6) в голенища ,
да и сапоги пожалуй что русские.		 But, from all. Here you are, for instance, (you) have thrust your trousers into your boot-legs,
[yes] and the boots are probably Russian.
9 Верно, сапоги ещё русские, - сознался он виновато True ; my boots are still Russian, he acknowledged, guiltily,
     
10 и вместе с тем радостно и любовно глядя на свои ноги... [and] at the same time [together with that] looking gladly and lovingly at his feet.
11 Да вы не опасайтесь, я вас немцам не выдам.
Куда и откуда идёте? (7)		 But [yes] don't be frightened, I shall not hand you over to the Germans. Front where (do you come) and where do you go?
     
12 Шли они из Шербурга, там были русские трудовые лагеря (8). They were coming from Cherbourg, where [there] were Russian work-camps.
13 При эвакуации поезд их разбомбили (9) и немцы разбежались. During the evacuation, their train was bombed and the Germans scattered.
     
14 Вот они и стали уходить из прифронтовой полосы (10) Then [here is] they began to go out of the front zone
15 вместе с французскими беженцами (11).
Бомбардировки были страшные.		 together with the French refugees. The bombings were terrific.
16 И с тех пор (12) идут уже месяц,
« гуляем по Франции, ничего страна, жить можно ».		 And from that time, they had been walking [already walk] (for one) month.
« We walk about France, not a bad country ; one can live ».
17 Кормятся на фермах, где немного поработают, и где так переночуют (13). They get food in [on] the farms, where they work a little and thus spend the night.
18 Французы в общем при слове « pуcc » принимают хорошо. The French people, generally, at the word "Russe" receive you well.

EXERCISE
1 Я с трудом вас понимаю, or Мне трудно вас понимать. I understand you with difficulty.
2 Он англичанин, и англичанином останется. He is English, and English he will remain.
3 Сколько ошибок вы сделали в переводе? How many mistakes did you make in the translation?
4 Я не сделал ни одной ошибки. I didn't make a single mistake.
5 Я точно не помню, с каких пор именно мы знаем друг друга. I can't remember exactly how long we have known [since when we know] each other.
6 У меня пиджак ещё держится, но брюки совсем изношены. My coat still holds together, but my trousers are quite worn out.
7 Прошло три года с тех пор как (or что) мы вместе с вами путешествовали. It is gone three years since we travelled together.
8 Вот уже три года, что (or как) мы с вами встретились впервые. It is already three years since we met for the first time.

ADDITIONAL EXERCISE
1 Я его вижу, я его увижу. I sec him, I shall sec him.
2 Я его видел, я его увидел. I saw him, I caught sight of him.
3 Они пошли купаться.
Они шли по этой дороге. 		They went to bathe.
They've gone this way.
4 Я принял лекарство. I took medicine.
5 Я принимал лекарство. I was taking (or would take) medicine.
6 Кто пустил собаку? Who let off the dog ?
7 Я сознаюсь, я виноват. I own up, it's my fault.
8 По какому поводу Вы ему написали? What about did you write to him?
9 Вы меня не поняли. You haven't understood me.
10 Тогда вы меня не понимали. Then, you didn't understand me.
     
    Let us remember :
  Давно ли вы здесь? Have you been here long?
  Я сознаюсь, что ошибся I own that I made a mistake.
  Опасно ехать по этому мосту It is dangerous to drive over that bridge
  Потрудитесь войти take the trouble to come in.
  Здесь кормят чудесно they feed you wonderfully here.

NOTES - ЗАМЕТКИ
1 They would stop and turn back would be: они останавливались и оборачивались.
Трое, двое, четверо, пятеро, may be said instead of три, два, четыре, пять (3,2,4,5) etc...
2 Я русский, but : я остался русским.
3 Мельница : the mill;
мельник, the miller;
мука, the flour.
Хлеб is at once bread and wheat.
The baker: булочник, from булка, the loaf of bread.
4 Ошибка: error, mistake.
Ошибаться (imp.), ошибиться (perf.) : to be mistaken.
Вы ошибаетесь, я ошибаюсь, они ошибаются;
past : вы ошиблись, я ошибся, они ошиблись.
5 Сомнение: doubt ;
сомневаться: to have doubts ;
я сомневаюсь, I doubt it.
Не сомневайтесь: don't doubt it.
— Признак: sign, clue;
знак: sign, signal.
6 Брюки : trousers;
пиджак: coat, jacket;
жилетка: waistcoat.
7 Не опасайтесь: не бойтесь.
Опасный: dangerous;
безопасный: harmless.
— Немцы : the Germans, front немой, dumb,
"the dumb, those who can't make themselves understood".
8 Труд : работа: work, labour.
Трудно: difficult.
С трудом: with difficulty.
Без труда: easily.
- Трудиться (imp.), потрудиться  (perf.) : to toil, labour.
Не трудитесь: Don't take the trouble.
- Трудовое население: a laborious population.
— Лагерь : camp (German Lager).
9 Or : разбомбили их поезд.
- Разбежаться: to run off in all directions.
Раз- implies dispersion, separation.
Разбить стакан: to break a glass into pieces.
Развод: divorce.
10 Полоса : streak, stripe, band, zone.
Полосатый : striped.
11 Беженец (рluг. беженцы) : refugee;
беглец, (plur. беглецы) : a fugitive.
12 Пора: time, period.
Пора мне идти: It's time for are to go.
С каких пор? Since when?
С тех пор: since that time.
До сих пор: until to-day, up to now.
13 Корм: пища: food.
Кормиться, питаться: to feed (oneself).
Здесь кормят хорошо: one eats well here.
— Ферма: the farm.
— Работать (imp.) : to work;
поработать (perf.) : to work a little.
