  Земляки (1). Compatriots
     
1 Был жаркий июльский (2) вечер тысяча девятьсот сорок четвёртого года. It was a hot July evening of the year 1944.
2 Взяв велосипед, я отправился за механиком, Having taken my bicycle I went for the mechanic,
     
3 чтобы к утру починить шину грузовика. (3) in order to repair, for the (next) morning, the tyre of a lorry.
4 Надо было во что бы то ни стало отвезти провизию нашим скрывавшимся товарищам; (4) We must, cost what may, carry provisions to our comrades in hiding.
5 были и ещё какие-то срочные дела. (5) There were still certain urgent affairs.
6 Поезда уже почти не ходили — путь беспрестанно бомбили самолёты (6). Already trains almost (no longer) ran — planes were bombing the (railway)-track continually.
7 Механик жил на окраине городка в уютном маленьком доме. The mechanic lived on the outskirt(s) of the little town, in a small comfortable house.
     
8 Проезжая полевой дорожкой мимо огородов и полей, Riding along a country track, among orchards and fields,
9 я на перекрёстке заметил трёх мужчин (7), at [on] the crossroads, I noticed three men
     
10 тянувших самодельную (N. 2) тележку со всяким скарбом (В). dragging a bad hand-truck ["self-made" little truck] with quite an [every] outfit.
11 Они были от меня довольно далеко, но одного взгляда было достаточно, They were far enough from me, but one look was enough
     
12 чтобы подумать — наверно русские... to think : surely Russians.
13 Я приметил взятое ими направление,
и нажав на педали, быстро доехал до механика (9)		 noted the direction they had taken and pressing on the pedals, I rode quickly to the mechanic's,
     
14 и затем, повернув обратно, пустился догонять тройку. and then, riding back, set in pursuit of the trio.
15 Я их потерял из виду, но скоро я их снова увидел, совсем близко, и окликнул их I had lost sight of them, but I descried them again soon, quite near, and called them.
16 Эй, земляки, куда идёте? Hey, compatriots, where are you going?

УПРАЖНЕНИЕ

EXERCISE
1 Майский жук влетел в комнату через открытую форточку. А May-bug [beetle] flew into the room through the open skylight.
2 Я возьму велосипед  и отправлюсь за доктором. I shall take my bicycle and shall go for the (or a) doctor.
3 Я ничего не скрываю от вас. I conceal nothing from you.
4 Воры скрылись с моими вещами. The thieves have bolted with my things.
5 Я боюсь, что не смогу заплатить всю сумму в срок I am afraid that I shall not be able to pay the whole sum falling due.
6 Одолжите ей, сколько ей не хватает. Lend her what she is short of.
7 Дайте мне билет туда и обратно. Give me а return ticket.
8 Я зайду к вам на обратном пути. I shall call on you on my way back.
9 Он подарил мне словарь, (1)
но потом взял его обратно (or назад).		 He gave me a dictionary, (as a present), but then he took it back.
  ДОБАВОЧНОЕ УПРАЖНЕНИЕ  

ADDITIONAL EXERCISE
    Key: Put the following from the present into the imperfect, past indefinite and future:
1 Он отправляется в школу. отправлялся, отправился, отправится.  
2 Где вы живёте? Жили, пожили, поживёте or будете жить.  
3 Я беру зонтик. брал, взял, возьму.  
4 Что вы думаете? думали, подумали, подумаете or будете думать.  
5 Я ничего не вижу. видел, увидел, увижу.  
       
      Let us post up :
       
  Туда и обратно   There and back.
  Дайте ему его игрушку обратно (or назад)   Give him back his toy.
  Она будет обратно через два-три дня   She will be back in 2 or 3 days.
  Мне нужен словарь во что бы то ни стало   I must (have) a dictionary, cost what may.
  Вы встретите тут земляков своих   You will meet corm-patriots of yours there.
 

NOTES - ЗАМЕТКИ
1 Земляк, from земля, the earth, land ; compatriot, countryman.
2 Июльский, adjective of Июль, of July.
Likewise : Майский, of May;
январский, of January;
августовский, of August etc...
3 Шина, the tyre or rim;
грузовик, the motor-lorry, from грузить, to load.
4 Во что бы то ни стало: cost what may, at any price.
Скрыться (скроюсь, скроется, скроются; past скрылся) (perf.) ;
скрываться (imp.) : to hide (oneself).
5 Срочный : urgent.
Срок: term, falling due.
В срок, or к сроку: in due time.
6 The inversion : the track ceaselessly bombed the planes is possible in Russian.
— Беспрестанно: ceaselessly (from перестать).
7 Перекрёсток : crossroads, crossing;
перекреститься (pert.); креститься (imp.) : to cross oneself, or to be christened.
Крещёный : christened.
Крещение: christening / baptism.
Крест: the cross.
8 Телега: the cart;
тележка, diminutive;
скарб : accoutrement, outfit, kit.
9 ...взятое ими направление : the direction taken by them.
- Нажав, infinitive нажать, perfective of жать, to press, squeeze
(я жму, он жмёт, они жмут).
Быстрый: скорый.
Contrary : медленный, slow; тихий, slow, calm.
