  Воспоминания красавицы (1) Memories of a beauty
     
1 Я влюбилась впервые (2) в тысяча девятьсот четырнадцатом году, весной. I fell in love for the first time in the year 1914 , in spring.
2 Не то чтоб очень влюбилась, но вижу Митя страстно ухаживает (3), It is not that I was much in love, but I saw [see] that Dimitri courted (present) me passionately
     
3 цветы посылает, (4) конфеты, руки жмёт ужасно. sent [sends] me flowers, sweets, squeezed [squeezes] my hands awfully.
4 Дай, думаю, выйду за Митю (5). Чего ждать? Well [give] ! I think, I shall marry Dimitri. Why wait?
5 Не всякий день девушке делают предложение (6). (It is) not every day (that) one makes a proposal to a girl.
6 Митя — офицер. Тут, кстати, первая мировая война. Dimitri is an officer. (And) there, precisely, (comes) the first world war.
7 Тогда это было ново. В обществе стали модны героические чувства. Then it was (a) new (thing). In society, heroic feelings became the fashion.
     
8 И я туда же : "невеста героя". (7) and there I am "the betrothed of a hero".
9 Ну, думаю, если убьют Митю, буду "вдова героя". Well, I think, if they kill Dimitri, I shall be "the widow of a hero".
     
10 Почти титул. И пенсия наверняка... (It is) almost a title. And a pension, to be sure.
11 Мы повенчались. Всё было трогательно и живописно. (8) We married. All was touching and picturesque.
     
12 Но всё же Мите надо ехать на войну. But all (the same) Dimitri must go to the war.
13 Я говорю ему : "умоляю тебя, будь осторожен. I tell him "I entreat you, be careful.
     
14 Тебя убьют, так я куда же?
думай об этом."		 (If) they kill you, what becomes of me [so whither I]?
Think of it."
15 Уехал. Плачу. Получаю письма. Шлю (9) телеграммы. He went off. I weep. I receive letters. I send telegrams.
16 Переменила причёску. Всегда бледна... Всегда в тревоге... (10) I changed my head-dress. Always pale... Always in alarm.
17 Вижу сны. Вздрагиваю. «Молодая жена героя ». I have [see] dreams. I shiver. "The young wife of a hero."
18 В театр иду только в чёрном. To the theatre I go only in black.
19 Портрет мужа в медальоне. Целую (11) перед сном. The portrait of my husband in a locket. I kiss it before sleep(ing).
20 Всё-таки пища сердцу (12) (It is) a help [food] for the heart, anyway.

  Заплачет вся моя семья. All my family will cry.

ADDITIONAL EXERCISE
1 Вы помните, как он влюбился в вашу сестру? Do you remember how he fell in love with your sister?
2 Он ухаживает за всеми женщинами, красивыми или некрасивыми. He courts all women, nice or plain.
3 Целоваться на Пасху, старый русский обычай. To kiss at Easter is an old Russian custom.
4 Скажите, что именно он вам предложил? Say, what did he propose to you exactly?
5 Стало модно (ог модным) ходить без шапки (шляпы). It has become the fashion to go (out) without a cap (hat).
6 Как вы бледны! Отчего вы дрожите? How pale you are. Why do you shiver?
7 Это от холода, а не от страха. It is with cold and not with fear.
8 Он всё трогает (ог Он хватается за всё). He touches everything.
     
    To be remembered :
  Уже стало жарко (холодно) It's already hot (cold).
  Пейте это перед сном drink this before sleep(ing).
  Я прямо влюбился в ваш дом I really fell in love with your house.
  Он ей сделал предложение he made a proposal (proposed has made a proposition) to her.

  Кстати говоря, сколько ей лет? Apropos, how old is she?
  Я чуть не пропустил поезд I all but missed the train.

NOTES - ЗАМЕТКИ
1 Красавица : a beauty.
красота: beauty in general, (like the beautiful scenery).
2 Влюбиться в кого-нибудь: to fall in love with somebody.
Впервые: в первый раз.
3 Ухаживать (за + instr.) : to woo, court; to have particular attentions for somebody.
Страсть: passion, ardour love.
— Мне страсть как хочется...: I terribly want to...
4 Посылать, я посылаю, он посылает: to send (imp.).
Послать, я пошлю, он пошлёт: to send (perf.).
Пошлите мне цветы: send me flowers.
5 Выйти замуж: to marry (for a woman), to take a husband;
жениться: to marry (for a man), to take a wife.
6 Предлагать (imp.), предложить (perf.) : to propose.
Всякий: каждый.
7 Невеста : the fiancée;
жених: the fiancé.
8 Венчаться (imp.), повенчаться (perf.) : to marry (at the church) ;
from венец, the crown (During the ceremony a crown is held over the couple's heads).
- Трогать (imp.), тронуть (perf.) : to touch.
Не трогайте меня! Don't touch me!
Он вина не тронул: he did not touch his wine.
- Живописец or художник : a painter (artist) ;
живописный : picturesque.
9 Шлю  (infin. слать), or посылать.
10 Причёска: head-dress
причесаться, причёсываться: to do one's hair.
Гребень: the comb ;
щётка для волос: a brush for the hair.
Зубная щётка: tooth-brush.
Тревога: alarm, alert.
11 Целовать (imp.), поцеловать (pert.) : to kiss;
поцелуй: a kiss.
12 Пища: food;
питание: alimentation.
Питать (imp.), напитать (perf.) : to feed, cater for.
Воспитать: to bring up, educate;
воспитание: upbringing education.
Человек воспитанный: a well-bred man.
— Сердце: the heart;
сердечный: hearty.
Сердиться (я сержусь, он сердится) : to get angry.
13 Нонешний, popular for нынешний: of to-day,
from ныне, нынче: at present, to-day.
Нынешний день: to-day's day.
— Денёчек, diminutive of день.
14 Чуть светочек: чуть свет: hardly (day)-light.
Я чуть не упал: I all but fell [hardly not fell].
- Чуть только я вошёл: hardly had I come in...
Я его чуть-чуть тронул: I hardly touched him.
