  Сон наяву (Окончание) A waking dream (the end)
     
1 A вот целый рассказ в лицах (N. 6). But here is a whole story with [in] characters.
2 Садовник поливает из помпы цветы в саду (1) A gardener is watering with a pump flowers in the garden,
     
3 Вдруг сзади осторожно подкрадывается мальчишка (2) Suddenly from behind, an urchin approaches stealthily [cautiously].
4 и наступает на кишку (3). and puts his foot on the hose.
5 Вода перестаёт бить из насоса (4), The water ceases to spout [beat] from the pump,
6 и удивлённый садовник начинает рассматривать наконечник трубы (5). and the astonished gardener begins to examine the end of the hose.
7 Тогда шалун снимает ногу, Then the imp takes off his foot,
     
8 и вода сильной струёй ударяет в лицо садовника (6). and the water in [by] a strong spout strikes the gardener in the face.
9 Он оборачивается весь мокрый, замечает мальчишку, He turns back all wet, sees [notices] the brat
     
10 который удирает, бросается за ним, догоняет его, who bolts, dashes after [behind] him, overtakes him,
11 хватает (N. 7) за ухо и приводит на первый план, seizes him by the ear and leads him to the fore-ground,
     
12 где начинает его драть, where he begins to slap (his backside),
13 но мальчик вырывается и, потирая место ниже спины, убегает (7). but the boy wrenches himself free [out] and, rubbing the place below his back, runs away.
     
14 С таким восторгом и восхищением (8) (It is) with such enthusiasm and ecstasy
15 описывал чудесное изобретение Люмьера (9) (that) the prodigious invention of Lumiere was described
16 первый русский кинозритель, (10) by the the first Russian cinema spectator [that the f. R. spect. described...],
17 посетивший первый в мире кинотеатр (11). having visited the first cinematographic theatre in the world.
18 "Недостаток этого поистине (12) удивительного изобретения", "The drawback of this really wonderful invention."
19 пишет он, "тот, что освещение его не вполне натуральное, he writes," is [that], that the lighting was not fully natural,
20 точно при ярком лунном свете, без красок." exactly as in a bright moonlight, without colours."
 

УПРАЖНЕНИЕ

EXERCISE
1 Лошадь наступила ему на ногу. A horse trod on his foot.
2 Вы разве не посетили выставки картин? Have you not visited the picture exhibition?
3 Неизвестно, кто изобрёл динамо. We don't know who invented the dynamo.
4 Я этому совсем не верю; это он наверно выдумал. I don't believe it all; he surely invented it.
5 У меня не хватает бумаги, чтобы докончить перевод. I am short of paper to finish my translation.
6 Этого мне хватит на целый год. This is sufficient for me for a whole year.
7 Я вам брошу ключ; хватайте! I will throw you the key : catch it !
8 Он удирает : догоните его! He's running away : overtake him !
9 Он кричал, точно его убили. He was yelling as if they had killed him.

ADDITIONAL EXERCISE
    Let us again turn the narrative into the past, from parag. 2 to parag. 13.
We shall have :

    Let us read over again :
  Что вы ещё выдумали? What have you invented, (imagined) there again?
  Он её схватил за руку he seized her by the hand (or arm).
  Этого ещё не хватало this is the crowning blow.
  С меня хватит I fed up with it!
  Давайте поиграем, чтобы убить время Let us play а little, to kill time.
  Он говорит, точно он всё знает he speaks as Ii he knew' everything.
  Он ведёт себя, точно он пьяный he behaves as if he (was/were) drunk.
 

NOTES - ЗАМЕТКИ
1 Поливать (imp.), полить, (perf.) : to water, from лить (imp.), налить (perf.) : to pour.
Я лью, вы льёте;
дождь льёт: the rain pours.
Налейте ему ещё стаканчик: Pour him another little glass.
Цвет: the colour or the flower the blooming.
Цветы: the flowers; цвета: the colours.
Цветок: the flower.
2 Подкрасться: to steal up, like a thief.
Красть, украсть: to steal.
У меня украли бумажник: they stole my wallet.
— Мальчишка: a deprecative diminutive of мальчик.
'The ending -ишка implies disparagement.
3 Ступать: to walk; наступать: to walk on something, or attack, advance.
Наступает ночь: the night is coming.
— Кишка: intestine(s), bowel(s) ; hose. (The ending is not ишка, but ишка).
4 Насос is the current word for pump;
помпа is more technical.
- Сосать: to suck.
Молокосос: a milksop.
5 Смотреть (imp.), посмотреть (perf.) : to look.
— Рассмотреть (perf.), рассматривать (imp.) : to inspect, examine.
- In наконечник, we find конец, the end, extremity.
— Труба: a pipe, or bugle, or trumpet.
Трубка: "a small pipe" : the (smoker's) pipe.
6 Струя: spout.
— Он ударяет : he strikes;
он ударит: he will strike.
7 For the perfective of all these verbs, sec the Additional Exercise.
8 Восторг : delight, rapture enthusiasm;
восторженный: exalted enthusiastic.
- Восхищение: delight, admiration ecstasy;
восхищённый: delighted, enraptured.
9 Писать (imp.), написать (perf.) : to write.
Описать (perf.), описывать (imp.) : to describe.
— Чудо : miracle, prodigy;
plur.: Чудеса;
adject. : чудесный.
— Изобретать (imp.), изобрести (perf.) : to invent;
изобретатель, inventor;
to invent, imagine is also выдумать (to think out).
10 Зритель: spectator;
зрение: sight.
Он имеет дурное (слабое) зрение: he has a bad sight.
11 Посещать (imp.), посетить (perf.) : to visit, call on.
Посетитель: visitor.
Посещение, визит: the visit.
Мир: the world (свет), or peace.
Война и мир: war and peace.
12 Недостаток: fault, shortcoming.
Достаточно: sufficiently, enough.
Этого мне недостаёт: I miss this.
Этого только недоставало: [Only this was missing] : this is the crowning blow, "puts a lid on it".
Истина: правда: truth;
истинный, or настоящий: real, genuine.
13 Краска: colour, paint;
цвет: (natural) colour.
