  Сон наяву (Продолжение) A waking dream (continued)
     
1 Или другая картина :
мы на вокзале железной дороги. (1)		 Or, another picture : we are at the railway station.
2 Вдали показался поезд. In the distance a train has appeared.
     
3 Он приближается, растёт, летя прямо на вас (2). It draws near, grows (larger), rushing [flying] straight upon us.
4 У платформы он останавливается. At the platform it stops.
5 Из дверей вагонов начинают вылезать самые разнообразные типы путешественников. From the doors of the carriages begin to step down the most various types of passengers.
6 Они бегут, волнуются, возвращаются, сталкиваются друг с другом, They run, fret about, turn back, knock against [with] each other
7 ссорятся, смеются, тащат свой багаж. (3). quarrel, laugh, drag their luggage.
     
8 Отъезжающие уже торопятся занять их места (9), Those who leave [Leavings] hasten to occupy their seats, [places]
9 суетятся, разыскивают места поудобнее, (5) fidget, look for more convenient seats.
     
10 Вот какой-то парень залез не в свой класс, откуда его выпроводили. (6). Now [here is] a young fellow has got into the wrong [not his] class, from where they have expelled him.
11 Он опять на платформе, растерянно оглядывается, (7) не знает, что с собой делать. He is again on the platform, looks about (as if) lost, and does not know what to do with himself.
     
12 Ну вот все уселись (8). But now [here is] all have settled [sat] down.
13 По знаку кондуктора поезд опять двинулся вперёд, On a signal from [off the guard the train has moved forward again,
14 и вам невольно становится страшно, (9) and fear gets hold of you in spite of you [this becomes frightful to you unwillingly],
     
15 как бы паровоз не раздавил, (10) that the engine should smash you,
16 потому что вы находитесь как раз поперёк его дороги. (11). because you stand precisely athwart its way.
 

УПРАЖНЕНИЕ

EXERCISE
1 Он удобно уселся в кресле. He settled down comfortably in an (or the) arm-chair.
2 Идите поближе ко мне or приблизьтесь. Come nearer to me (or draw near).
3 Я не знал, что вы в ссоре со своей семьёй. I did not know that you had fallen out [were in quarrel] with your family.
4 Поищите, и вы найдёте. Seek and you will find.
5 Я всё ищу, и не нахожу. I always (all) seek, and do not find.
6 Вам стоит только оглянуться, чтобы его найти. You have only to look around von to find it.
7 Было так темно, что мне стало страшно. It was so dark that I began to be frightened.
8 Он был раздавлен паровозом. He was run over [crushed) by the (or an) engine.
9 Не оставляйте автомобиля поперёк улицы. Don't leave your (or the) car across the road.
10 Позвольте я вас провожу
or Позвольте мне вас проводить. 		Allow that I accompany you
or Allow me to accompany you.
11 Он сел в кресло и раздавил собачонку. He sat down in the easy chair and crushed the little dog.
  ДОБАВОЧНОЕ УПРАЖНЕНИЕ

ADDITIONAL EXERCISE
    For an exercise, we shall take the text from parag. 3,
and tell the story in the past.
We shall have the following changes in verbs :

    Let us note :
  Что вы тащите с собой? What are you dragging along with you?
  Я вам разыщу место поудобнее I shall find you a more comfortable seat [place].
  Я правда (or право) не знаю, что с собой делать I really don't know what to do with myself.
  Он в ссоре со всеми своими соседями the has faller: out will all his neighbours.
  Мы совсем растерялись We were quite at a loss.
 

NOTES - ЗАМЕТКИ
1 Вокзал is a more important station than станция.
2 Приближаться (imp.), приблизиться (perf.) : to draw near (близко).
- Расти or рости: to grow;
растение: a plant.
— Лететь, летать (imp.) : to fly.
-- Самолёт: aeroplane.
Лётчик : airman.
3 Ссора (ssawra) : quarrel, dispute.
Ссориться: to quarrel, to fall out.
— Таскать, тащить: to drag about
— Тачка: the wheel barrow.
4 Отъезжать: уезжать, the prefixes от and у both imply departure
— ... занять их места: to occupy the seats of the passengers who go out ;
to occupy their own seals would be : ...занять свои места.
5 Суетиться: to take trouble, to fidget.
Искать (perf.), поискать (imp.) : to seek, look for;
разыскать (perf.), разыскивать (imp.) : to research.
6 Какой-то парень: any, "any kind of" young fellow.
- Проводить (perf.), провожать (imp.) : to accompany, conduct, lead.
Выпроводить: to lead out, expel.
7 Растерянный: at a loss (from терять, to lose).
Оглядываться (imperf.), оглянуться (perf.), (root : гляд, look) : to look about (oneself).
8 Сесть (perf.), садиться (imp.) : to sit down ;
усесться: to take a seat (N. 2).
9 Становиться, стать (S. N. 5);
страшный : that gives fear,
from страх, fear.
Вам не страшно? Вы не боитесь? : You are not frightened?
10 Паровоз: locomotive.
Пар: steam;
паровая машина: a steam-engine;
парить: to steam;
париться: to lake a steam- (or Turkish) bath.
— Давить, to press, weigh upon, stifle.
Раздавить: to crush.
11 Поперёк: across, athwart (+ genitive) ;
Вдоль и поперёк: on every side, all over, by and large.
