УРОК НОМЕР СЕМЬДЕСЯТ ДВА (№72)

Lesson number seventy two (#72)
     
  Дядя рассказывает. Uncle Tells
     
1 Волшебный Мальчик очень любил путешествовать. (1) The Little Magic Boy liked very much to travel.
2 Что это значит — путешествовать? робко спросила маленькая Сюза. What does that mean, to travel, timidly asked little Sue.
     
3 Путешествовать, моя крошка, значит разъезжать (2) по свету. To travel, my little girl [crumb] means to scour the world.
4 Только наш Мальчик путешествовал не так, как все - Only, our Little Boy did not travel like everybody [all],
5 не на лошадях, не на автомобиле, и не по железной дороге, not in a carriage [on horses], not in a car, and not by the railway,
6 а совершенно иначе. (3) but absolutely otherwise.
7 У них в квартире висело много картин, таких же, как и у нас, (4) In their flat, there hung many pictures, such as in our house,
     
8 только куда лучше!..
Картины были превосходные (5).		 only, how much [whither] finer [better] !
The pictures were excellent.
9 На одной, например, был виден густой лес (б) On one, for instance, was seen a thick forest,
     
10 с высокими старыми деревьями, и между ними with tall old trees, and among them
11 какой-то удивительный зверь с одним рогом на голове (7), a sort of astonishing beast with one horn on its head.
     
12 а на этом звере — плачущая женщина. and on this beast, a weeping woman.
13 На другой — большой, большой сад с такими славными (8) дорожками и скамьями, On another, a large, large garden with such wonderful walks and benches,
14 и на скамьях — важные красавицы (9) в богатых нарядах. and on the benches imposing [important] beauties, in rich attire[s].
     
15 Ещё на одной — море в сильную бурю, On another still, the sea in a strong storm,
16 со страшными волнами, утёсами и лодкой, with terrific waves, rocks and a boat
17 разбивающейся об эти утёсы (10). breaking on these rocks.
18 Далее — рыбаки-великаны, сидящие за обедом (11), Again [farther], giant-fishermen, sitting at their dinner
19 на берегу около своей лодки. Потом ещё и ещё. on the shore, near their boat. And then, again.., and again...
20 И вот тут то Волшебный Мальчик и путешествовал, And here is where [here is there] the Little Magic Boy [and] would travel,
21 по этим самым картинам, то в одной, то в другой .. by these same pictures, now in one, now in the other...

УПРАЖНЕНИЕ

EXERCISE
1 Я зайду к вам на обратном пути. I shall call on you on my way back.
2 Я вас устрою, так или иначе. I shall fix you up in one way or another.
3 Покажите мне какие у вас картины. Show me what pictures you have.
4 У меня в квартире очень холодно. It is very cold in my flat.
5 Не плачьте, милая, не надо плакать. Don't cry, little [nice] one, you must not cry.
6 Он заплакал от радости. He began to cry for joy.
7 Деревья так густы, что ничего не видно между ними. The trees are so dense that nothing (can be) seen through [among] them.
8 Ваши друзья пошли кататься на лодке. Your friends have gone an au outing in the boat.
9 Они сейчас сидят за обедом. They are dining just now.
10 Я вас подожду на берегу реки. I shall wait for you on the bank of the river.

ADDITIONAL EXERCISE
1 Он славно устроился. He settled down superbly.
2 Он не знает, как устраиваться. He does not know how to manage.
     
3 Давайте кататься верхом. Let's go for a ride.
4 Мы будем кататься на лодке. We shall go for a row.
     
5 Нельзя всё время кататься (ог гулять). One can't be strolling about all the time.
     
6 Мой друг, мои друзья; от моих друзей;
с моими друзьями ; о моих друзьях. 		My friend, my friends ; from my friends ;
with my friends, about my friends.
7 Моя подруга, мои подруги; от моих подруг ;
с моими подругами ; о моих подругах.		 My (lady-) friend, my (lady-) friends ; from my (lady- )friends ;
with my girlfriends, about my (lady-) friends.
     
    Let us pick out :
  Спросите у него ещё раз ; иначе он забудет : Ask him once more; otherwise, he will forget.
  Попробуйте так, это куда легче ! Try like this, it is so much easier!
  Он славный малый He is an excellent fellow.
  Мы как раз сидели за обедом We were precisely having our dinner.
  Он путешествовал (разъезжал) по всей России He has travelled all over Russia.
  Хотите покататься на лодке ? Will you take a little outing in a boat?
(кататься: to go on an outing).
 

NOTES - ЗАМЕТКИ
1 Путь (masc.) : the way.
Железнодорожный путь: the railway [iron-road way].
— Счастливый путь! or счастливого пути! (genitive) : А good journey to you!
По пути: on the way, in passing;
на обратном пути: on the way back.
Таким путём: In this way, manner.
— Путешествие: the travel.
Путешественник: the traveller.
2 Разъезжать: to travel in all directions, scour.
Раз-  often expresses dispersion, separation.
3 Лошадь (fem.) : the horse (hard L!).
Ехать верхом: to go on horseback.
- Иначе: otherwise.
- Так или иначе: to one way or another.
4 Картина: image, picture. —
Here таких, genit. plur., agrees with картин.
5 Превосходный : excellent.
Ваше превосходительство: your Excellency.
6 Густой: thick, dense.
У неё густые волосы: She has thick hair.
7 Зверь (zv'er') : wild beast.
Звериный: ferocious,
Зверинец: menagery.
— Рог: horn;
рогатый: horned.
8 Слава (hard L!) : glory.
Слава Богу: Glory to God
— Славный: glorious, famous, excellent.
— Compare : Славянин, Славяне: a Slav, Slays;
славянский: Slav.
— Let us recall:
слабый: weak.
— Дорога: the way, road;
дорожка: the walk, lane.
— Дорогой : dear.
9 Скамейка or скамья: the bench.
— Красивый: fine;
красавец: a handsome man;
красавица: a beautiful woman, a beauty ;
красота: beauty in general.
10 Буря: the storm.
Волна: wave.
Утёс: rock, reef.
Лодка: the boat.
Разбивающейся: которая разбивается.
11 Рыба (fem.), the fish.
Рыбак: fisherman.
— Великан: the giant.
— Сидящие: которые сидят.
Берег: the bank, or shore.
На берегу реки: on the bank of the river.
— Вдоль берега: along the bank.
