Lesson number seventy one (#71)
     
  Дядя расскажет. Uncle will tell
     
1 Да.. Этого мальчика я знал, когда я был не старше вас. (1) Yes, that little boy, I knew (him) when I was no older than you
2 Было ему лет двенадцать,
столько же, сколько и тебе, Ниночка,		 He was about 12 years old, just as [much as] you, Ninochka
     
3 и с виду он казался совершенно таким же, как и все другие дети. (2) And as you saw him [from sight] he looked absolutely like [as and] all the other children.
4 Он любил и пошуметь, а полентяйничать, (3) He liked [and] to make noise, and loaf about.
5 Мама его часто бранила, как вот и вас. His mother would often scold him, just as [here is and as] you.
6 А на самом деле это был совершенно особый, необыкновенный мальчик,
Волшебный мальчик.		 And in fact [on same affair] he was an absolutely strange, extraordinary little boy, a Magic Little Boy.
7 Он мог делать всё, что хотел,
всё, что ему ни приходило в голову,		 Ne could do all that he wanted, all that came to his mind [head],
     
8 чего не мог 6ы сделать ни один человек на свете. (4) [of] what could not have done [not] one man in the world.
9 Но этого никто не знал, даже его мама... But that (negat.) nobody knew, not even his mother.
     
10 A как же вы узнали, дядя? спросила Ниночка .. But then how did you know, uncle? asked Nina.
11 Ну, начала уже перебивать.. Узнал. Очень просто. Now, she has already begun to interrupt (me) ! I knew. Quite simply.
     
12 Мы жили с ним в одном доме, и мне он всё рассказывал... (5) We lived together [with him] in the same [one] house.
and to me he told everything.
13 Ах, дети, какой это был хороший дом! Ah, children, how good a house this was !
14 Дядя вздохнул, помолчал немного,
и начал говорить дальше, тихо и печально. (6)		 The uncle sighed, was silent a little, and began to speak on, softly and sadly,
     
15 Дома этого уже больше нет...
Он стоял под высокой горой... (7)		 This house is [already] no more... It stood below a high mountain...
16 Дядя опять вздохнул... The uncle sighed again...
17 Ну, вот я вам и расскажу, что делал Волшебный Мальчик Weil, [here is] I [and] will tell you what the Magic Little Boy did,
18 И что с ним иногда случалось... (8) and what would happen to him sometimes...

EXERCISE
1 Ваш младший брат старше меня на три года. Your younger brother is older than I by 3 years.
2 Вы моложе меня на семь лет. You are younger than I by 7 years.
3 Вот общий вид города. Here is a general view of the town.
4 За что вы его бранили?
— За то, что он был ленив.		 What did you scold him for?
— Because he was lazy.
5 Другого такого вы не найдёте на всём свете. You won't find another such in the whole world.
6 Говорите дальше, мы вас слушаем. Speak on, we are listening to you.
7 Иногда мне кажется, что она смеётся надо мной. Sometimes it seems to me that she laughs at me.
8 С виду он кажется грустным (ог печальным),
а на самом деле он очень весёлый человек. 		By his looks, he seems sad, and in fact he is a very cheerful man.
9 Нужно быть осторожным, и не говорить всё, что вам в голову придёт. You must be cautious, and not say all that will occur to you[r head].
10 Я приблизился потихоньку (from тихо). I drew near very gently.
11 Мы с вами одного возраста. We two are of the same age.

ADDITIONAL EXERCISE
1 У него дурной вид. He looks ill [has ill look].
2 Что вы имеете в виду? What have you in sight?
  Что вы имеете ввиду?  
3 У него усталый вид. He has a tired look.
4 Вы кажетесь очень сердитым. You seem very angry.
  Вы кажется очень сердиты.  
5 На сколько она моложе вас? By how much is she younger than you?
  Насколько она моложе вас?  
6 Сколько у тебя осталось денег? How much money have you got left
[was left with you]?.
7 Столько же, сколько и у вас. As much as you have.
8 Он путешествует по свету. He travels all over the world.
9 Другого такого нету (ог нет) на всём свете. There is no such in the whole world.
10 Он меня перебил. He interrupted me.
11 Он меня всё время перебивал. He was always interrupting me.
     
    Let us remember :
  В самом деле вы были правы In fact ["in the same thing"] you were right.
  Это самый высокий дом на всём свете This is the highest house in the whole world.
  Он с вами одного возраста You two are of the same age.
  Мне столько же лет, сколько и вам I have the same age as you, am as old as you.
  Пишите дальше Write on.
  За что он её бьёт? What does he beat tier for?
(What did she do, that he should beat her).
  Он говорит всё, что приходит в голову He says all that occurs to him [his head].
 

NOTES - ЗАМЕТКИ
1 Старый: old;
старее: older;
старше: elder.
Молодой: young;
моложе: younger.
Старший брат: the elder brother;
младший брат: the younger brother (the root молод changes into млад).
Старший офицер: Higher officer.
2 Он такой же, как и все другие: he is like all the others.
Он кажется таким же как и все другие: he seems to be like all the others (S. N. 10).
Вид на жительство: identity paper; permission to stay.
3 Пошуметь (pert), шуметь (imperf.), from шум, noise.
— Пошалить, шалить, to play pranks;
шалость, mischievousness;
шалун, a mischievous child.
- Полентяйничать, from лень (l'eп') : laziness;
ленивый: lazy;
лентяй: a lazy man.
- Лениться: to "laze".
4 Parag. 7 :
он мог делать: imperfective, with idea of duration, permanency.
— Par. 8:
Чего не мог бы сделать: perfective, with idea of single action.
— Свет is light and world.
5 Рассказывал (imperf.), and not рассказал (perf.), in order to express the frequency of the action.
6 Дальше, farther (далеко, far), is used to express continuation.

Тихий: calm, peaceful.
Тихий Океан: The Pacific Ocean.
Печаль, (femin.) : sadness.
Печальный: грустный: sad.
7 Супа больше нет (or нету) : There is no more soup
(суп) (negat. genit.).
Гора, the mountain or hill :
дорога идёт в гору: the way goes up hill.
8 Случалось (imperf.) : was happening (at times) would happen:
and not случилось (perf.) : happened (once).
