УРОК НОМЕР ШЕСТЬДЕСЯТ ДЕВЯТЬ (№69)

Lesson number sixty nine (#69)
     
  Летом, на даче. In Summer, at [on] the cottage
     
1 ... После вечернего чая взрослые обыкновенно расходились (1), After the evening tea, the grown ups usually dispersed
2 кто куда, на пляж, на музыку, или просто побродить (2), in all directions [who where], on the beach, at the music, or simply to loaf (a bit),
     
3 посидеть где-нибудь в поле (3). sit down (awhile) any where in the field(s).
4 Дома с детьми оставался очень любивший их дядя, старый холостяк, At home with the children remained an uncle who loved them very much [much loving, them uncle], an old bachelor,
5 предпочитавший их общество всякому другому, (4) preferring their company to every other,
6 и забавлял их, да и себя, рассказывая им сказки, (5) and diverting them, and himself too [yes and oneself], by telling (them) tales,
7 которые тут же и придумывал (6). which he invented on the spot [even here]
     
8 Дети с нетерпением ожидали наступления вечера и, The children waited with impatience for [of] the approach [advance] of evening, and
9 как только оставались одни с ним, тотчас же as soon as [as only] they remained alone with him, at once
     
10 обступали его и начинали приставать : they would surround him and annoy him :
11 Дядя! Дяденька! Пожалуйста! Расскажите сказочку! Расскажите! миленький!.. (7) Uncle ! little uncle ! Please ! Tell a little story ! Tell ! Darling [nice] !
     
12 Ну, так и быть ... ещё сегодня расскажу вам что-нибудь .. Well, I will [so and be]... To-day again I shall tell you something...
13 А завтра уж прошу оставить меня в покое .. But to-morrow then [already] I ask you to leave me in peace.
14 Это — в самый последний раз .. This is the very [in same] last time...
     
15 Дети переглянулись, улыбаясь : (8) The children would exchange glances, smiling
16 Эта фраза была им давно знакома. This sentence had long been known to them.
17 Садитесь же ..
И смотрите, не перебивайте, не то [нето] сейчас же брошу. (9)		 Well, sit down...I stop [throw] at once.
18 Ну-c, так вот... Расскажу я вам... про...
одного знакомого мне Волшебного Мальчика. Хорошо? (10)		 Well then, here you are [thus here is]. I will tell you... about...

ADDITIONAL EXERCISE
1 Народ расходился во все стороны. The people were dispersing on all sides.
2 Он пал на поле битвы (битва : battle) . He died on the battlefield.
3 Они пошли погулять в поле. They have gone for a walk in the field(s).
4 Она не умеет держаться в обществе. She does not know how to hold herself in society.
5 Я не имею ничего общего с ними. I have nothing in [of] common with them.
6 Эта комедия очень забавна. This comedy is very amusing.
7 Не бросайте работу без причины. Don't abandon [throw] the job without cause.
8 Я был взят в плен в самом начале войны,
и пробыл три года в плену.		 I was taken prisoner [into captivity] at the very beginning of the war,
and spent 3 years in captivity.
9 Он просидел четырнадцать месяцев в тюрьме. He stayed [sat] 14 months in jail.
10 С восхода до захода солнца. From sunrise to sunset [rising to setting of the sun].
     
     
  В вашем обществе не скучно It is not dull in your company.
  Игра эта очень забавна, и в то же время полезна для детей This game is very amusing and at the same time useful for the children.
  Мухи и комары всю ночь приставали ко мне Flies and mosquitoes harassed me all night.
  Так и быть ! So [and] be it! All right!
  Так и будет ! It shall be so!
  Оставьте меня в покое ! Leave me alone!
  Не приставайте ! Don't bother me!
 

NOTES - ЗАМЕТКИ
1 Вечерний : of the evening; утренний: of the morning.
— Взрослые: the grownups, adults (которые уже выросли, who have slopped growing).
— Расходитесь!: Disperse! Move on! (also : проходи!)
2 Кто куда: "who whither", each to his side.
The Russian tongue has many of such elliptical phrases, such as :
кто кого? Who (will beat) whom?
Это как кому: This depends on tastes.
3 Поле (pawl'e) : the field, or fields.
The по before сидеть, бродить, adds the idea of "a little".
4 Предпочитать: to prefer.
Я предпочитаю, I prefer;
предпочтительно: preferably.
Общество: society, company.
Общий: commit, general.
Общественный: social, public.
— Страховое общество: Insurance Company.
- Общее собрание: general meeting.
— Общая польза : the common interest.
— Общее дело: the common cause.
— Вообще: generally.
В общем: on the whole.
5 Забавлять : to amuse, divert;
это забавно: it's amusing.
— Сказка: legend, tale.
6 Придумывать, imperfective of придумать, expresses here a habit, а repeated action.
In the same way, parag. 8, 9 and 10, оставались instead of остались,
ожидали, instead of подождали,
обступали instead of обступили,
and начинали instead of начали.
7 Дяденька, dimin. of дядя ;
сказочка, dim. of сказка;
миленький, dim. of милый.
8 Глянуть : to glance at; переглянуться: to exchange glances.
(Взгляд, a look).
9 Бросить : to throw, cast, or abandon, leave.
Я брошу: I shall throw;
вы бросите, он бросит, они бросят.
— Imperfective : бросать, я бросаю, (I throw),
вы бросаете, он бросает, они бросают.
- Imperative : бросьте! (or бросайте!) : throw! or stop!
Он бросил камень (kamm'en') в окно, he threw a stone at the window.
Я сегодня бросил службу: To-day I deserted my office [service].
Это бросается в глаза: This flies to the eyes.
10 Ну-с: the с is familiar, without special meaning.
In popular language, it follows да (да-с), нет (нет-с), вот (вот-с), with a polite intention.
— Волшебный: enchanting, magical.
Волшебный фонарь: magic lantern.
11 Тюрьма : prison, jail;
adjective : тюремный;
the prisoner (in jail) : арестант, заключённый.
— The prisoner (of war, or figuratively): военнопленный, or пленник.
— To take prisoner : взять в плен (рl'eп).
12 Часовой : the sentinel (from час, hour), an adjective used as a noun.
13 Стеречь: to keep, watch, another form of сторожить, to keep.
— Сторож, the keeper, watchman.
Ночной сторож: night-watchman.
