Lesson number sixty seven (#67)
     
  Клопы (1) The bugs
     
1 Я остановился ночевать на постоялом дворе (2). I stopped for the night at [in] an inn.
2 Прежде чем ложиться спать, я взял свечу и осмотрел углы кровати и стен (3) Before [that] going to bed [lie sleep] I took a candle and examined the corners of the bed and walls,
     
3 и когда увидал, что во всех углах были клопы, and when I saw that in all the corners there were bugs,
4 стал придумывать, как бы устроиться на ночь так (4), I began to think out how [ could settle for the night so
5 чтобы клопы не добрались/добрались до меня (5). that the bugs should not get to me.
6 со мной была складная кровать, но я знал, I had a folding bed with me, but I knew
7 что, поставь я ёё и посередине комнаты,
клопы сползут со стен на пол (6)		 that, should I put it even in the middle of the bedroom,
the bugs would descend from the walls to the floor,
    AK: you should put "even" in translation
8 и с полу, по ножкам (7) кровати, доберутся и до меня; and from the floor, by the feet of the bed, would also come up [and] to me;
9 a потому/поэтому я попросил у хозяина четыре деревянные чашки (8), and that is why I asked from [near] the landlord 4 wooden porringers,
     
10 налил в чашки воды и каждую ножку кровати поставил в чашку с водой. poured water (genit.) into the porringers and put each foot of the bed in a porringer of [with] water.
11 Я лёг, поставил свечу на пол и стал смотреть, что будут делать клопы (9). I lay down, put the candle on the floor, and began to watch what the bugs would [will] do.
     
12 Клопов было много, и они уже чуяли/учуяли меня : Bugs there were many and they had already scented me ;
13 я видел, как они ползли по полу [пополу], влезали на край чашки, I saw how they crawled on the floor, climbed on the edge of a porringer,
14 и одни падали (N. 5) в воду, другие ворочались назад  (возвращались назад) ... and the ones fell into the water, and the others turned back...
     
15 Я хотел уже потушить свечу,
как вдруг почувствовал, что меня кусает что-то (10).		 I already wanted to put out the candle,
when suddenly I felt that something was [is] biting me.
16 Осматриваюсь : клоп. Как он попал ко мне? (11). I look over myself : а bug; how did it come [fall] on me?
17 Не прошло минуты (12) (как) я нашёл другого ... There had not elapsed a minute (when) I found another.
18 Долго я не мог понять, как они до меня добрались, For a long moment, I could not understand how they got to me,
19 но наконец взглянул (13) на потолок и увидал - but at last I cast a look on the ceiling and saw :
20 клоп полз по потолку;
как только он дополз вровень с кроватью,		 a bug was crawling on the ceiling; as soon as [as only] it crawled up to just over my bed,
21 он отцепился от потолка и упал на меня (14). it detached [unchained] itself from the ceiling and fell upon me.
22 "Нет", подумал я, "вас не перехитрить",
(15) надел шубу и вышел на двор.		 "No", thought I, "one cannot "have"  you".

EXERCISE
1 Вы будете у нас ночевать. You will spend the night at our house.
2 Он стал привыкать к нам. He has begun to get used to us.
3 Эта собака кусается; надо её держать на цепи. This dog bites; it is necessary to hold him in chain.
4 Если позволите, я всё это устрою для вас. If you allow me, I shall settle all that for you.
5 Я ещё не успел устроиться. I have not yet had the time to settle.
6 Она уже попросила у него денег, но без успеха. She asked him for money, but without success.
7 Как она сюда попала? How did she happen (to be) here?
8 Лошадь упала, и не могла подняться. The horse had fallen and could not raise itself up.
9 Помогите мне поднять этот чемодан. Help me to raise this trunk.
10 Поднимитесь (ог Встаньте на ноги [наноги]). Stand up again (оr get up on your feet).
11 Потушите лампу, электричество, свет. Put out the lamp, the electric light, the light.
12 Будьте осторожны : он человек очень хитрый. Be cautious; he is a very cunning man.

ADDITIONAL EXERCISE
1 Поставьте свечу в угол. Put the candle in the corner.
2 Положите (1) книгу в угол. Lay the book in the corner.
3 Я беру свечу с собой. I take the candle with me.
4 Я возьму свечу. I shall take the candle.
5 Я брал свечу. I was taking (or would take) the candle.
6 Я взял свечу. I took the candle.
7 Четыре чашки, пять чашек. Four cups, five cups.
8 Я только пошутил. I was only joking.
9 Я потушил свечу / свечи. I (have) put out the candle / candles.
10 Спросите у хозяина, у хозяйки. Ask [near] the landlord, the landlady.
11 У этого стула не хватает одной ножки. This chair has one leg missing.
12 Я видел; я увидал/увидел. I was seeing (or would see) ; I saw.
13 Спросите хозяина, хозяйку. Ask (or ask for) the landlord, the landlady.
     
    Let us remember :

  Как вы сюда попали? How do you happen (to be) here?
  Кошка влезла (влезала) на дерево The cat climbed (was climbing — would climb) on a tree.

NOTES - ЗАМЕТКИ
1 Клоп (hard L) : the bug ; блоха (bloh-ha), the flea.
  Ночь: the night;
ночевать: to pass the night.
Постоялый двор: "a yard where one stops" : an inn, a stage.
— (Стоять: to stand to stop).
3 Свеча or свечка: a candle (свет, light) ;
угол: corner;
кровать (femin.) : bed;
стена: wall.
4 Придумывать, imperfective of придумать.
— Как бы: бы indicates the conditional, but the verb (как бы я мог) remains understood.
Устроиться: to settle; строить: to build.
— Я стал работать: I began to work. Infinitive : стать.
5 Добраться до: to reach, liter. to betake oneself to.
Брать: to take.
Я беру, вы берёте, (N. 4).
6 Сползать: to creep down.
На пол: on the floor (acc. of mot.);
на полу (or по полу) : on the floor;
с полу: from the floor (genitive).
7 Нога: the foot or leg, becomes ножка, if one means the leg of a piece of furniture
(just as рука becomes ручка).
8 Хозяин, the landlord;
хозяйка, the landlady.
— Дерево, wood or tree;
деревянный, wooden.
Деревья: the trees.
Compare : деревня, the village or country.
9 Я лёг (l'og); infinitive : лечь (l'etch') perfective for ложиться.
Я лёг спать: I went to bed,
я ложился спать: I was going (or would go) to bed.
— Что будут делать, instead of что сделают indicates that an action of some duration is meant.
10 Кусать or кусаться: to bite.
Эта собака кусается, this dog bites.
Compare кусок: a piece, bit (bite) ;
закуски: hors d'oeuvre.
11 Осматривать, imperfective of осмотреть (о changes into а), to examine, inspect.
Смотреть, посмотреть: to look, inspect.
Попасть, попадать: to come by chance, find oneself.
Как попадётся: as it will chance, anyhow.
12 Не прошло: there did not elapse, an impersonal form.
13 Взглянуть (from взгляд, look, glance) : to cast a glance at.
Смотреть : to look (more attentively).
14 Отцепиться , root цепь (ts'ep'), the chain.
Упасть, to fall (N. 5).
15 Хитрый: cunning.
— The verbal prefix пере-, beside to cross, means : to surpass.
Перехитрить: to surpass in cunning, outwit.
16 Толстой is declined ; so are most proper names.
Those in -енко (like Зощенко) of Ukrainian origin remain, exceptionally, invariable.
Лев (Leo) Николаевич Толстой (nominative) ;
Льва Николаевича Толстого (genitive) ;
Льву Николаевичу Толстому (dative).
The adjective thick is толстый, not толстой.

положить : to put, lay (something which lies flat).
