	УРОК НОМЕР ШЕСТЬДЕСЯТ ЧЕТЫРЕ (№64)	Lesson number sixty four (#64)

	Для просвещения народа (1)	For the education of the people

1	Конечно, население довольно слабо изучило (N. 1) метрическую систему (2).	Of course, the population (neuter) studied slackly [feebly] enough the metric system.
2	Некоторые полуинтеллигенты не могут ещё враз сообразить (З),	A few half-educated [intelligent] (people) cannot yet imagine at once,

3	сколько для примеру (примера) километр весит (4).	how much, for instance, a kilometre (kilometer) weighs.
4	Но, спасибо, спичечный трест во время (вовремя) на помощь (5) пришёл.	But, thank (God) the match trust came to the rescue in time.
5	Газеты пишут: "Для широкого ознакомления (б) населения с метрической системой	The newspapers write : For a wide knowledge, by [of] the population, of [with] the metric system,
6	решено: выпустить спички с напечатанной на этикетах (этикетках) коробок метрической таблицей (7).	(it has been) decided to issue matches with, printed on the labels of the boxes, the metric table.
7	Вот спасибо-то! Одно худо (8) : спичечная коробка - дело как бы сказать, хрупкое...	Now [here's) thanks very much ! [Only] one (thing) wrong : a match box is a ,... how should (I) say, fragile affair.
8	Надо метрическую меру монументальнее увековечить (9).	(It is) necessary to perpetuate the metric system [measure] more monumentally;
9	Скажем — на памятнике. Скажем на товарище Петре Великом (10).	(let us) say, an a statue [monument]; (let us) say, on comrade Peter the Great.
10	Пущай на нём будет надпись (11).	Let a notice be (put up) on him.
11	Или в крайности, пущай он в протянутой ручке плакат держит (12) :	Or at the least, let him hold a placard at arm's length [in stretched arm] :

12	а я, братцы, вместе с лошадкой столько-то вешу (13).	" now I, my friends [little brothers] together with (my) horse, weigh so much ".
13	Население заинтересуется и изучит, что надо ...	The population will get interested and learn what (they) must.
14	Население действительно довольно отсталое ...	The population is really backward enough...
15	Чего там говорить насчёт метрической системы —	What's the good of [Of what there] speaking about the metric system :
16	таблицы умножения многие не знают (14).	the multiplication table, many don't know (it).
17	A не напечатать ли эту самую таблицу умножения на папиросных коробках?	And (why) not print this same multiplication table on cigarette packets?
18	Пущай население курит и умножает.	Let the people smoke and multiply.

1	Я учусь русскому языку, но я его далеко не изучил.	I study the Russian tongue, but I am far from having learnt it.

3	Идите ему на помощь.	Go to his help.
4	Волга самая великая и широкая река в Европе.	The Volga is the grandest and widest river in Europe.
5	Надеюсь, что вашей матери сегодня лучше. Нет, к сожалению, ей хуже.	I hope that your mother [to your mother] is better to-day No, unhappily she [to her] is worse.
6	Что вы держите в руке?	What do you hold In your hand?
7	Он держал руки за спиной.	He held his hands behind his back.
8	Как только вы ознакомитесь с работой, вы заинтересуетесь ею.	As soon as [As only] you are acquainted with the work (fem.), you will be interested in it.
9	Не верьте всему, что напечатано.	Do not believe [in] all that is printed.
10	Вы наконец решились?	You have at last made up your mind?
	— Нет, я не могу решиться.	- No, I can't make up my mind.

	ДОБАВОЧНОЕ УПРАЖНЕНИЕ	ADDITIONAL EXERCISE
1	Дайте мне коробку спичек.	Give me a box (ace.) of matches (gen. plur.).
2	Эти французские спички никуда не годятся.	These French matches are worth nothing.
3	Я желаю познакомиться с вашим отцом.	I desire to be acquainted with your father.
4	Отец ознакомил его с делом.	His father acquainted him with the business.
5	Он держал её за руку.	He held her by the hand (acc.).
6	Она держит ребёнка на руках (1).	She holds a child on her arms (prepos.).
7	Держитесь ещё минутку, мы идём вам на помощь.	Hold on a minute longer, we conic to your help.
8	Он протянул мне книгу or руку.	He held out (perf.) a book — or his hand, to me.
9	Что вы тянете за собой?	What are you dragging (imp.) behind you (instr.)?
10	У него всегда много денег.	He has always much money (gen. plur.).
11	Многие из них не знали куда идти.	Many of them did not know, where to go.

		Let us pin up :
	Некоторые (многие) из нас не заплатили за вход	Some (many) of us did not pay for admittance.
	Это, как бы сказать, по крайней мере странно	It is — how shall I say — at the least strange.
	Нет худа без добра	(Proverb.) : no ill without good : It's an ill wind that blows nobody any good.
	Пустите меня !	Let me go!
	Пусть or пускай он делает, что захочет !	Let him do what he likes.
	Век живи, век учись, дураком умрёшь !	(Prov.) : Live a century, study a century, you will die a fool.

1	Министерство народного просвещения: The Board of [national) Education. — The root of просвещение is свет, the light. Светить: to shine. Посветить: to light up.
2	Слабый, weak, contrary of сильный, strong. Изучить что-нибудь (perf.) : to learn something completely. Учиться чему-нибудь: to study something. Метр, the meter. — Метрическая система: the metric system.
3	Некоторые : some, a few. Некоторые из них: some of them. — Сообразить: to understand, represent to oneself. (Образ: fashion, shape, image, icon). Некоторым образом: in some way. — Таким образом: in this way.
4	Для примеру (для примера) : Например. Весить: я вешу, to weigh, I have the weight of. Вешать, я вешаю: to hang (transitive).

12	Край : extremity, edge, region; крайний : extreme. по крайней мере: at least. В крайности: at the extreme Тянуть: to draw. Протянуть: to stretch. - Держать: to hold, keep. — Держите налево, направо: keep left, right. Я держу пари, что...: I hold the wager that, I bet that...
13	Братец, plur. братцы, diminutive of брат, brother, (plur. братья).
14	Таблица is here in the genitive on account of the negative turn of the sentence. In умножение, multiplication, we find много, many (or much). Много (adverb), Многие (adj. variable); умножить (perf.) : to multiply. Множество: multitude.

(1)	Рука is the hand or the arm, just as нога is the foot or the leg. Ручка (dimin.) : small hand, or ~~penholder~~, or handle. Ручка зонтика: umbrella handle. Ножка: small foot or the leg of a piece of furniture. Ножка стола: the leg of a table.
