1 The "thou" (ending шь) is much used
шт Russian, not only in intimacy or by the
people, but also in a general sense, corresponding to "one" in English
(S. less. 56, par. 8), particularly in proverbial phrases. Ничего не поделаешь: One can't help it. |

2 Gerund. — It is rather little used in current language; thus "I don't like to drink while eating" will be : я не люблю пить во время еды or когда я ем. I could not come, being tired : я не смог прийти, т.к. я устал. However it is found in adverbial phrases such as : несмотря на то, что...: not allowing for the fact that... (смотря, present gerund of смотреть, to look, consider) and : хотя, although, from хотеть, to want or will. |

3 Угадать (perf.), угадывать
(imperf.) : to guess. Вы угадали! : Good guess! You guessed ! Угадайте!: Guess! Догадаться, догадываться, are also to guess, to have an inkling, idea, of. Я не догадался, как это делается: I did not guess (had no idea of) how it is done. Гадать: to conjecture, or more specially to tell fortunes. Умеете ли вы гадать на картах? : Can you tall fortunes by the cards? |

4 To turn is вертеть, or
вращать, or поворачивать. — To return, or come back : вернуть or вернуться. In all these verbs, we find the в-р. — Turn the page : Переверните страницу. — Come back (to us) quickly : Вернитесь скорее. |

5 To change : Менять, разменять, изменить,
переменить. How you have changed! : Как вы изменилисьl I want to change my French money : Я хочу разменять мои французские деньги. Перемена: change. Измена: treason. Изменник: a traitor. |

6 Скрыть, (perf.), скрывать
(imperf.) : to hide, conceal. Я скрою, он скроет, я скрываю, он скрывает. Я не скрою от вас, что...: I shall not conceal from you that... Где он скрывается? : Where is he hiding? — They have slunk away (or disappeared) : они скрылись. In the same way, we have: открыть, открывать: to open. Откройте дверь!: Open the door! — Как эта штука открывается? : How is this thing opened? And : закрыть, закрывать: to shut, cover. Закройте or закрывайте ворота! : shut the gate! Покройтесь этим одеялом: Cover yourself with this blanket. Я бы пошёл с закрытыми глазами: I should go with (my) eyes shut. — Крыша: the roof. — Крышка: the lid. Раскрыть: to uncover. Открытие: discovery |

7 Отнять, отнимать, or снять,
снимать all mean to take away or off; but отнять and отнимать imply constraint. У меня всё отняли: They look everything from me. — Снимите шляпу: take off your hat. For a photo, you say : снимать фотографию: to take a photo. — Хотите, я вас сниму? : Do you want me to take you? Снимок: a photo. — Дайте мне вашу карточку: Give me your photo. Визитная карточка: a visiting card. |
