  Возвращение The return
     
1 Архитектор, статский советник Узелков приехал в свой родной город, (1) The architect, state Councilor Ouzelkov was arriving in his native town,
2 куда он был вызван для реставрации кладбищенской церкви .. (2) where he had been called for the restoration of the graveyard church.
     
3 В этом городе он родился, учился, вырос (3) и женился, In this town he had been born, had studied, (had) grown, and (had) married ;
4 но, когда он вылез из вагона, он едва узнал его (4). but when he stepped down from the car [wagon], he hardly recognized it...
5 Всё изменилось ... Everything had changed...
6 Восемнадцать лет тому назад, когда он переселился в Питер (5), Eighteen years before [back of that], when he had transplanted himself [AK :)] to Petersburg,
7 на том, например, месте, где теперь стоит вокзал, on that spot, for instance, where now stands the station,
8 мальчуганы ловили сусликов (6); street-boys would catch "soussliks" ;
9 теперь при въезде на главную улицу высится четырёхэтажная "Виена с номерами" (7) - now, at the entrance of the main street rises the four-story furnished house "Vienna";
10 тогда же тут тянулся безобразный серый забор (8). then (there) stretched here a shapeless grey fence.
11 Но ни заборы, ни дома - ничето ничто так не изменилось, как люди. But neither fences nor houses, nothing had changed so much as the people.
     
12 Из допроса (опроса) номерного лакея Узелков узнал (9), Having questioned [From the questioning of] the furnished-house manservant [AK: ...] [lackey], Ouzelkov /has aquiered info that/ learnt
13 что больше чем половина тех людей (10), that more than half [of] the [those] people

ADDITIONAL EXERCISE
1 Позовите сейчас доктора. Call (for) a (or the) doctor at once.
2 Он уже пошёл за доктором. He has already gone for a (or the) doctor.
3 Как называется эта площадь? What [How] is this square called?
4 Как зовут эту собаку? How do they call this dog?
5 Я её позвал, a она не ответила. I called (perf.) her, and she did not answer (perf.).
6 Когда я его звал, он обыкновенно не отвечал. When I called (imperf.) him, he usually did not answer (imperf.).
7 Я их не знал. I did not know (imperf.) them.
8 Я их узнал. I recognized them (perf.).
     
    To be remembered :
  Я был в Лондоне пять лет тому назад I was in London 5 years ago.
  Я уже пять лет в Лондоне I (have been) [already] 5 years in London.
  Я был пять лет в Лондоне I was 5 years in London.
  Она умерла два года тому назад she died two years ago.
  Уже два года как она умерла (it is) [already] two years since [how] she died.

AK-NOTE
1 Статский советник: State councilor, a dignitary of the Czar's regime.  
2 Звать : to call (я зову, он зовёт, вы зовёте, они зовут).
— Как вас зовут?: What [how] do they call you?
Вызвать: to summon.
Кладбище (neut.), graveyard.
- Церковь (fem.) church.		  
3 Родиться : to be born ("to born oneself").
Где вы родились? : Where were you born? Hence родной: native.
Родители: the parents; родственники: the relatives.
Вырастать (imperf.), вырасти (perf.) : to grow up.		  
4 Вылезать, вылезти (из) : to come out of from.
- Едва: hardly. Я едва его узнал: I hardly recognized him.		  
5 Три года (пять лет) тому назад: 3 (5) years ago.
— Переселиться: to emigrate, settle elsewhere.
— Село, селение: the village, market-town.
Население: the population.
— Питер is a former (now "new") familiar name for Петербург: St-Petersburg.		 It's called Санкт-Петербург
6 Мальчуган : street-boy (from мальчик, a little boy).
The суслик is a grey animal, bigger than a rat, which lives in colonies in burrows.		 Мальчуган is kind of contraction, мальчик + хулиган :)

7 Въезд : the entrance (for carriages) ;
вход: the entrance (on foot).
— Высокий: high, lofty; выситься: to rise.
Четырёхэтажный: four-storied.
— Номер: number or furnished room.		  
8 Тянуть : to draw, drag.
Тянуться: to drag or stretch oneself.
Меня тянет на родину : I'm homesick. (Родина: native country, motherland).
— Образ: shape, fashion or icon.
Безобразный: shapeless, ugly.
Таким образом : in this manner.		 родина - семья, родственники (украинский)
9 Допрос : examination, interrogatory.
— Вопрос : a question;
просьба : a request, a plea, a prayer;
прошение: a request, supplication.
Просить: to ask, to request.
— Номерной : an adjective formed with номер ;
лакей: a lackey, servant.		 Опрос
10 Больше чем половина or больше половины.
(After a comparative : чем, not что).
Он вас знает лучше, чем вы думаете: he knows you better than you think.
Те or эти люди: those or these people;
Тех or этих людей: of those or these people;
тем or этим людям : to those or these people;
о тех or об этих людях : about those or these people.		  
11 Вымерло, обеднело, забыто: impersonal forms, neuter ending in о.
Вымереть, to die, disappear; умереть: to die.
— Он умер : he died, he is dead; она умерла: she died, she is dead.
— Обеднеть: to become poor (бедный, poor).		 Вымереть is to die-out, to got extinct
12 Понапрасну: a popular form of напрасно, in vain.
Ванька, diminutive of Ваня, from Иван.
Слёзки, diminutive of слёзы.
- Лить, налить: to pour, shed.
