(Saying) Farewell [Leave-taking] (Continued Ending)
     
1 Речь Веры перешла в неясное бормотание (1) Vera's speech became [passed into] a confused murmur ,
2

и вдруг оборвалась плачем (2).

 and suddenly broke into [by] tears (sing.).
     
3 Девушка закрыла лицо платком, ещё ниже нагнулась The girl covered [shut] (her) face with her handkerchief, bent still lower,
4 и горько заплакала (З). and started crying bitterly.

Иван Алексеич, не зная, что говорить и делать,

 Iv. Al., not knowing what to say and do,
6 безнадёжно поглядел вокруг себя (4). looked around him hopelessly.

- Ну, вот ещё! забормотал он...

 Well, that's another thing ! (Well here's again), he stammered.
8 Вера Гавриловна, ну к чему это, спрашивается?

Vera Gab Gavrilovna., now, what's this for, I wonder.

Голубушка, вы... вы больны?
Или вас кто обидел? (5)

 Dear friend [Little dove), you... you are ill?
Or somebody offended you?
10 Вы скажите, быть может, я сумею помочь... [You] tell (me), perhaps I shall be able to help...

Когда он, пытаясь утешить её (6)

 When he, trying to comfort her,
     
12 позволил себе осторожно отнять (N. 7) от её лица руки, made so bold as [allowed himself] to remove softly her hands from her face,
13 она улыбнулась ему сквозь слёзы и проговорила : she smiled to him through (her) tears and said :
14 Я... я люблю вас! I... I love you.
15 Эти слова, простые и обыкновенные,
были сказаны простым человеческим языком.		 These words, simple and ordinary,
were spoken in simple human language;

Огнёв в сильном смущении отвернулся от Веры (7),

 but Оgnev deeply moved [in strong emotion] turned away from Vera,
17 и вслед за смущением почувствовал испуг.. (8). and, after emotion, felt fear...
18 Что же это такое? ужаснулся он про себя (9) . Now what is it? he feared in himself.
19 Но ведь я же её ... люблю, или нет?
Вот задача-то!		 But, is it that I... love her, or not? Here is some problem!

EXERCISE
1 Красная армия перешла в наступление (в атаку). The Red Army took [passed into] the offensive (attack).
2 Как вы перейдёте через реку, если нет моста? How will you [go a-] cross the river, if there is no bridge?
3 Закройте окна, a то комары влезут. Shut the windows, or else the mosquitoes will creep in.
4 Ужас как много комаров около (or близ) реки. It's awful [terror] how many mosquitoes there are by the river.
5 Он обиделся, потому что я ему написал только открытку. He was offended because I wrote only a post-card to him.
6 Не обижайтесь, если мы не сможем прийти. Don't be offended if we can't come.
7 Голубчик, вот вам подарок в утешение. My dear, here's a present for you as a [in] compensation.
8 Посмотрите (ог поглядите) вокруг себя. Look (or cast a glance) around you [oneself].
9 Он бормотал что-то сквозь зубы. He was muttering something between [through] his teeth.
10 Поедете ли вы через Варшаву? Will you go through Warsaw?

ADDITIONAL EXERCISE
1

Перейдём через улицу.

Let's [go a-] cross the street (acc.).
2 Пойдём на ту сторону улицы. Let's go on the other [that] side (acc. of motion) of the street (genit.).
3 Магазин на той стороне площади. The shop is on the other [that] side (prepos.) of the square (genit.).
4 В какую сторону он убежал? In what direction (acc. of mot.) did he run away?
5 Прошу вас молчать. I pray you to keep silent.
6 Я спрошу (ог попрошу) у него разрешение. I shall ask (perf.) him the permission.
7 У меня к вам просьба. I have a request to (make) you.
8 Простите (or Извините) меня, я не нарочно это сделал. Excuse me, I did not do it on  purpose (perf.).
9 Прощайте, мы больше не увидимся. Farewell, we shall meet [see (each other)] (perf.) no more.
10 Пойдём скорее, а то мы опоздаем. Let's go faster, or else we shall be late (perf.).
11 Осторожно! нас оттуда видят Mind ! They (can) see us from (over) there !

Перейти (perf.), переходить (imperf.) : to pass, cross.
Где вы перешли границу? : Where did you cross the frontier?
Ясно как день: (It's) as clear as day.
— Неясно: confusedly.
Объяснить (root ясн) : to make clear, explain.
- Бормотать: to mutter.
Чего он бормочет? : What does he mutter for?

Плач : weeping, tears.
Слеза, слёзы: a tear, tears.

Плакать (imp.) : to cry, to weep;
заплакать (pert.) to start crying, weeping;
он плачет: he's crying, he weeps;
он плакал: he wept.
Он заплачет : he will start weeping;
он заплакал (она заплакала) : he (she) started weeping.
Нагнуться (perf.) : to stoop;
гнуться (imp.), : to bend.
Нагните голову, нагнитесь: bend (your) head, bend down.

Безнадёжно: from надежда„ hope;
надеяться, to hope
(Here, exceptionally, (5. less. 49, par. 4), it is the adverb which has ё).

Голубь (hard L!), the pigeon, dove,
becomes голубка, голубушка (fem.), and голубчик (masc.): my dear, darling.
- Обидеть (perf.), обижать (imp.) : to offend.
Обида: offence, insult.
— Обидно: offensive, untoward, regrettable.
Обидно, что вы опоздали: it's regrettable that you should be late.
Он постоянно обижается: he continually takes offence.

Пытаться : стараться: to strive, apply oneself to.
— Утешение: comfort.

Смущать (imp.), смутить (perf.) : to perplex, puzzle.
Смущение: perplexity, confusion.

Испуг: fear, fright.
Испугаться, напугаться : to be frightened.
Напугать: to frighten.
Не пугайтесь: don't be frightened.
Вы меня напугали: you frightened me.

Ужас : fright, terror. —
Ужас (or ужасно) как холодно: It's terrible (« awful ») how cold it is.
Это ужасно: it's terrible.
