Вам, кажется, холодно, сказал Огнёв.
Сидеть в тумане не совсем-то здорово (1).

 You are cold, I think [(me) seems], said Оgnev.
Staying [sitting] in the fog is not precisely [not quite] wholesome.
2 Давайте-ка я провожу вас нах гауз (2).

Just let [give] me accompany you "nach Hause'.
     
3 Вера молчала.
—Что с вами? улыбнулся Иван Алексеич.		 Vera was silent.
— What's the matter with you? smiled Ivan Alekseitch.
     
4 Вы молчите и не отвечаете на вопросы, (З) You keep silent and don't answer my questions.
5 Нездоровы вы, или сердитесь? A? (4) You are unwell, or you are offended? What?
6 Вера крепко прижала ладонь к щеке (5), Vera pressed her palm very hard on [to] (her) cheek
7 и тотчас же резко отдёрнула её.
— Ужасное положение,		 and at once removed it briskly.
— (It's) a terrible situation.
8 прошептала она с выражением сильной боли на лице.
Ужасное! (6)		 she whispered with an expression of great pain on (her) face. Terrible !
9 Чем же оно ужасное? спросил Огнёв, пожимая плечами (7) In what is it terrible? asked Ognev, shrugging his shoulders (instr.),
10 и не скрывая своего удивления.
— В чём дело? (8)		 and not concealing his astonishment.
What is the matter?
11 Всё ещё тяжело дыша и вздрагивая плечами (9),

[All] still breathing heavily, and with shivering [shivering with the] shoulders,
     
12 Вера повернулась к нему спиной (10),
полминуты глядела на небо и сказала :		 Vera turned her back to him [turned to him with the back (instr.)],
looked at the sky for half a minute, and said :
13 Мне нужно поговорить с вами, Иван Алексеич. I need to talk to you a little, Ivan Alekseitch.
14 Я слушаю. I listen.

Вам может быть покажется странным..
вы удивитесь (11), но мне всё равно.

 It will seem a little queer (instr.) to you...,
You will wonder, but I don't care.
16 Огнёв ещё раз пожал плечами и приготовился (12) слушать. Ognev once again shrugged his shoulders and prepared to listen.

Видите ли, я вам вот что... хотела сказать...

 Here's what ("here's it"), began Verotchka ;
you see, here's what... I meant to say...

я больше не могу.		 It win seem to you strange (instr.)... and stupid (instr.), but I... I can no more (stand it).

EXERCISE
1 Позвольте вас проводить домой. Allow me  to accompany you (perf.) up to your house.
2 Отчего вы молчите? Вы сердитесь? Why do you keep silent? Are you angry?
3 Он хорошо выражается. He expresses ((imp.) himself well.
4 Я не умею выразить свои чувства. I cannot express (perf.) my (S. less. 56, par. 9) feelings.
5 Это меня нисколько не удивляет. This surprises me in no way.
6 Не стойте ко мне спиной. Don't turn your back on me [stand to me with back].
7 Здесь душно; мне тяжело дышать. (It's) stuffy here ; I have difficulty in breathing.
8 Слушайте меня, я вам всё объясню. Listen to me, I shall explain everything to you.
9 Пора приготовиться: поезд не ждёт. It's time to got ready (perf.); the train does not wait (imp.).
10 Она приготовляет сладкое. She prepares a dessert (imperf.).
  Она готовит сладкое.

AK: Use готовит instead:
She prepares "(something) sweet"
11 Не сидите на дворе в тумане, a то вы простудитесь. Don't stay [sit] outside in the fog, or you will catch cold.

1 Проводите её.

He will accompany (perf.) her.
3 Он её провожает. He accompanies (imperf.) her.
4 Он её проводил. He (has) accompanied (perf.) her.
5 Он её провожал. He was accompanying (imperf.) her.
6 Она его проводила. She (has) accompanied (perf.) him.
7 Она его провожала She was accompanying (imperfect.) him.
8 Хотите идти с проводником, или без проводника? Do you want to go (perf.) with a guide (instr.) or without a guide (gen.) ?
9 Дайте на чай проводнику. Give а tip to the guide (dative).
10 Не говорите мне о проводниках. Don't speak of guides (prepos.) to me.
     
    Let us note :
  Это меня нисколько не удивляет This does not surprise me at all.
  Я не сержусь, он сердится

I'm angry, he's angry
  Ставьте (or поставьте) мне вопросы, я вам отвечу

Put me questions, I shall answer.
  Нельзя ли открыть окно? Здесь душно Can't we open the window? It's stuffy here.

Туман : the fog.
Сидеть в тумане, сидеть дома: to stay in the fog, to stay ("sit") home.
The то after совсем is familiar.

Проводить (я провожу, perf.) or провожать (я провожаю, imperf.) : to accompany.
Проводник: guide, conductor.
- Нах гауз [наххаус]: nach Hause, (destination  home) a German phrase used jokingly;
in Russian : домой.
Notice the transcription of the German H by the guttural Г, while the ch is represented by х.

Вопрос: question (просить, я прошу (imperfect), or спрашивать, я спрашиваю;
спросить. я спрошу (perf.) ;
Что за вопрос!: What a question!
Поставить вопрос: to put a question.

Сердиться: to be angry, to continue angering, to become angry;
сердитый, gloomy, angry.
Я сержусь, он сердится, вы сердитесь.
— Я рассержусь: I shall get angry.

сердитый means more gloomy, not in his good mood; it's less angry then злой - angry

Ладонь (fem.) : the palm (of hand) ;
щека, the cheek (plur.: щёки — pr.: shtchawkee).
Бить or ударить по щеке: to give a slap.

Шептать : to whisper is as imitative as the English word.
Я шепчу, вы шепчете, мы шепчем.
— Выражение : expression.
— Выразить (perf.), выражать (imp.) : to express.

Пожимать плечами : to shrug (one's) shoulders.
Пожимать or пожать, is in fact to press (AK: "to press a little").
We have seen прижать, to press, of the same family, whose base verb head is жать.
Пожмите мне руку : Shake [Press] my hand.
Сапог мне меня жмёт : my high-boot is hurting my foot my shoe pinches me.
Conjugation : я жму, он жмёт, вы жмёте, мы жмём, они жмут, ты жмёшь.

Скрыть (perf.), скрывать (imp.) : to hide (N. 6.)
Удивление: astonishment.
Я удивлюсь: I'll be surprised I am surprised.
Удивительно: astonishing (or amazing).

Удивительный случай - striking case (that causes wondering)

Тяжёлый : heavy or painful;
тяжело, heavily or uneasily.
Contrary of лёгкий, легко.
-- Дышать (imperf.) : to breathe:
я дышу, вы дышите, etc...

Спина : the back (of human body).
Ветер нам в спину: we have the wind in (our) back (accus. of mot).

Вы удивитесь: You will be surprised : (удивиться (perf.);
вы удивляетесь: you are being surprised, you're wondering, you are surprised: (Удивляться, imperf.).
— Вам покажется странным (and not странно) : This will look strange to you.
Вам кажется странным : this looks strange to you.
Это странно: It's strange.

Это странно - it's abnormal - you might see "странно" as translation of "strange", but странно refers rather to сторона (side), so be careful

Я готов: I am ready.
Я приготовляюсь: "I'm readying", I get ready;
я приготовлюсь: I shall get ready.
