  Прощание (1) (Saying) farewell [Leave-taking]

Ну, вот и мостик! сказал Огнёв.
Тут вам поворачивать назад (2).

 Now, here's [and] the small bridge ! said Ognev.
(It's) here [that you (must) turn back.
2 Вера остановилась и перевела дух. Vera stopped and caught ["passed"] (her) breath.
     
3 Давайте посидим, сказала она,
садясь на один из столбиков. (3)		 Let [give] (us) sit down (awhile), she said, sitting down on one of the milestones.
4 Перед отъездом, когда прощаются,
обыкновенно все садятся...		 Before a departure, when (people) take leave, everybody [all] usually sit(s) down.

Она глядела (4) не на Ивана Алексеича (Алексеевича),
a куда-то в сторону,

 she gazed, not at [on] Ivan Alekseevitch., but somewhere sideways [m. s.],

так что ему не видно было её лица.

 so that her face (gen. neg.) was not visible to him.
7 И вдруг лет через десять мы встретимся, говорил он.
Какие мы тогда будем?..		 And suddenly, in ten years or so, we shall meet, he said.
What shall we be (like) then?
8 Встретимся и вспомним старину...
Теперь мы чувствуем настоящее, (5)		 We shall meet, and we shall remember the past... Now we feel the present,
9 оно нас наполняет и волнует,
а тогда, при встрече (6),		 it fills and moves us; but, then, at our meeting (to come),
10 мы уже не будем помнить
ни числа (7), ни месяца, ни даже года,		 we shall remember already neither the day [number], nor the month, nor even the year
11 когда виделись в последний раз на этом мостике. when we saw each other for [in] the last time on this little bridge.
     
12 Вы, пожалуй (8), изменитесь...
Послушайте, вы изменитесь (N. 5)?		 You will have changed, perhaps.
Say (Listen], you will have changed?
13 Вера вздрогнула (9) и повернулась к нему лицом. Vera started and turned (her) face to him.
14 Что? спросила она.
— Я вас спрашивал сейчас ... (10)		 What? she asked. — I was just asking...
15 Простите, я не слышала, что вы говорили (11). Pardon (me), I have not heard what you were saying.

Тут только Огнёв заметил в Вере перемену. (V. N. 5).

 Then [here] only (did) Ognev remark a change in Vera.
17 Она была бледна, и дрожь её дыхания сообщалась (12) She was pale, and the trembling of her breath communicated itself
18 и рукам, и губам, и голове (1З). [and] to (her) hands, and lips, and head.
19 Видимо, она избегала (14) глядеть прямо в глаза... Visibly, she avoided looking (him) straight in the eyes...

1

Поверните назад, нельзя проехать по этому мосту.

 Turn back, it is impossible to drive across this bridge (dative).
2 Выпьем ещё раз перед отъездом. Let's drink once more before the departure (instr.).
3 С первого взгляда я догадался,
что он не годится для этой работы.		 At the first glance (genit.) I had guessed that he was no good for this job... (genit.).
4 Я чувствую, что это нам принесёт несчастье. I feel that this will bring ill luck to us.

Where did you meet him (perf.)?
6 Каждый раз когда я их встречал,
я им говорил о вашем деле.		 Every time I met (imperf.) them, I would speak (imperf.) to them about your affair (prep.).
7 Не надо волноваться, всё пройдёт очень легко. (One) must not worry, all will go very easily.
8 Как она изменилась! Раньше она была любезнее. How she has changed ! she was more amiable before.

Простите, я не слышал, что вы сказали.

Excuse me, I did not hear (perf.) what you said (perf.).

ADDITIONAL EXERCISE
1 Перед отъездом; после отъезда; при отъезде. Before the departure (inst.) ; after the dep. (gen.) ; at the moment of [near] the dep. (prep.).
2 Через три года; через пять пет. In [through] 3 years; in 5 years.
3 Послушайте; я слушаю; я не слышал. Listen ; I listen (imp.); I have (or did) not hear[d] (perf.).
4 Помните; я помню; я помнил; я вспомню; я вспомнил. Remember; I remember (imp.);

— Волновать (from волна, the wave) : to agitate, stir.

— Встреча: the meeting, encounter.

- Без числа: numberless.

Без числа means "without number", countless.

Дрожать: to tremble.

Бегать or бежать, to run, flee.
