(русский, with final ий [iy] is either a noun or an adjective,
whereas по-русски [(in the) Russian (way)] is an adverbial phrase.)

2 Нет, я француз. n'ĕt, ia frantsooz. No, I (am a) Frenchman.
3 Но вы говорите по-русски?

no(r) vy gòvòreet'ĕ pò-rooskee.
(Notice that но means but, whereas no is нет.)

 But you speak Russian?
4 Нет, я только начинаю.

N'ĕt, ia tol'ko natchinnă'oo.
(толь - tol': say tol as if you were going to say : toli[ac] and stopped before ac.)

(Mind the hard — or vibrated L. See page XI, note 1.)		 What (do) you (pl. or polite) want?

ia (d)jĕLă'oo znăt' g´d'ĕ zd'ĕss' gospeetäl' .
(The soft sign ь, represented by ' (znă't', zd'ĕss', gospeetäl')
indicates that the preceding consonant must be slightly slurred,
as if you began to say znat'[ac] .)
(The ä represents an obscure ă, nearly a mute e .)

 I want to know where (is) here (the) hospital.
7 Я не знаю, но вот мой брат знает. ia n'ĕ znă'oo, no(r) vot moy brrăt znă'ĕt.
(We note brrăt with two rr to remind you that the r must be rolled.) 		I (do) not know, but here is my brother (who) knows.

vssio(r) prr'ăimo; gospeetäl' n'ĕ otchĕgn dal'ĕko.
(Do not say pree-amo, but ia in one sound, as in kayak. )

(after the stressed syllable да, the ния has an indistinct sound, rather n'ĕ than nia.)
