1980年6月16日, 罗布泊。 Lop Nur, June 16, 1980.
1980 nián 6 yuè 16 rì, Luóbùbó。  
正午, 太阳如火. At noon, the sun was burning.
zhèngwǔ, tàiyang rúhuǒ.  
“对长，你看!” “Chief, look at this!”
” duì zhǎng， nǐ kàn!”  
一个队员打开水箱. 水箱里的水很浑.
“这水不能喝了!”		 A team member opened a water tank, the water inside was turning dirty.
“We can’t drink this water!”
yī gè duìyuán dǎkāi shuǐxiāng. shuǐxiāng lǐ de shuǐ hěn hún.
“zhè shuǐ bùnéng hē le!”		  
彭加木看了看水箱里的水, 问他，
“我们还有多少能喝的水?”		 Peng Jia Mu looked inside the water tank and asked,
“How much drinkable water we have left?”
Péng jiā mù kàn le kàn shuǐxiāng lǐ de shuǐ, wèn tā，
“wǒmen háiyǒu duōshao néng hē de shuǐ?”		  
队员看了看其他的水箱，对彭加木说，
”还有两天能喝的水。”		 The team member checked other water tanks and told him,
“We still have drinkable water for another two days.”
duì yuán kàn le kàn qítā de shuǐxiāng， duì Péng jiā mù shuō，
“háiyǒu liǎng tiān néng hē de shuǐ。”		  
彭加木看看罗布泊这片沙漠，
又看看自己的车队和人，
对他的队员说，
”我们可以向部队要水。但部队很远。”		 Looking at the desert of Lop Nur
and his own group of cars and men,
Peng Jia Mu said to his team member :
“We can ask the army to send us water, but the army is far away.”
Péng jiā mù kànkan Luóbùbó zhè piàn shāmò，
yòu kànkan zìjǐ de chēduì hé rén，
duì tā de duìyuán shuō，
“wǒmen kěyǐ xiàng bùduì yào shuǐ。 dàn bùduì hěn yuǎn。”		  
队员说，
”队长，部队会有办法快一些给我们送水的。”		 The team member said,
“the army should be able to find a way to send water to us soon.”
duìyuán shuō，
“duìzhǎng， bùduì huì yǒubànfǎ kuài yīxiē gěi wǒmen sòng shuǐ de。”		  
彭加木点了点头，”嗯，我们还要汽油，
没有汽油，我们就没办法走出去了。”		 “Um, we also need gas,
without gas, we can not find other ways to get out of here.”
Péng jiā mù diǎn le diǎn tóu，” èn， wǒmen hái yào qìyóu，
méiyǒu qìyóu， wǒmen jiù méibànfǎ zǒu chūqù le。”		  
那天晚上，彭加木和九个队员在一起开会。
大家都同意向部队要水和汽油。		 That night, Peng Jia Mu and all nine team members had a meeting,
they all agreed to ask for the army to send them water and gas.
nàtiān wǎnshang， Péng jiā mù hé jiǔ gè duìyuán zàiyīqǐ kāihuì。
dàjiā dōu tóngyì xiàng bùduì yào shuǐ hé qìyóu。		  
那晚九点半,彭加木向部队发信息，
要部队送水和汽油。		 At 9:30 that night, Peng Jia Mu sent a message to the army,
asking for water and gas.
nà wǎn jiǔ diǎn bàn, Péng jiā mù xiàng bùduì fā xìnxī，
yào bùduì sòng shuǐ hé qìyóu。		  
失踪 [2] shī zōng Missing (2)
第二天早上九点，部队回信说，
飞机会运水过来，让大家原地等候。		 Nine o’clock the next morning, the army replied,
“Water would be delivered by air, please stay where you are and wait.”
dì’èrtiān zǎoshang jiǔ diǎn， bùduì huíxìn shuō，
fēijī huì yùn shuǐ guòlái， ràng dàjiā yuándì děnghòu。		  
彭加木看到部队的回信后，
觉得飞机运水成本太高，
应该自己想办法找水。		 Upon receiving the massage from the army,
Peng Jia Mu thought the cost of transporting water by air was too expensive,
they should search for water by themselves.
Péng jiā mù kàn dào bùduì de huíxìn hòu，
juéde fēijī yùn shuǐ chéngběn tài gāo，
yīnggāi zìjǐ xiǎng bànfǎ zhǎo shuǐ。		  
“我们昨天已经找过了，这里没有水啊!”
一个队员反对。		 “We have searched for water yesterday. We couldn’t find any.”
One team member object.
” wǒmen zuótiān yǐjīng zhǎo guò le， zhèlǐ méiyǒu shuǐ ā!”
yī gè duìyuán fǎnduì。		  
“地图上有好几个水井，我们应该再找找!”
彭加木说。		 “There are a couple water wells on the map, we should keep looking.”
said Peng Jia Mu.
” dìtú shàng yǒu hǎo jǐge shuǐjǐng， wǒmen yīnggāi zài zhǎo zhǎo!”
Péng jiā mù shuō。		  
另一个队员也反对，
”我们昨天挖了好几个地方，
没有看到有水井啊!”		 Another team member objected,
“We dug quite a few places yesterday,
there were no water wells!”
lìngyī gè duìyuán yě fǎnduì，
” wǒmen zuótiān wā le hǎo jǐge dìfang，
méiyǒu kàn dào yǒu shuǐjǐng ā!”		  
“那是因为地点不对。
你们看，这个地方有一个水井。”
彭加木指着地图上的一个地点说。		 “That’s because those were not the right spots.
Look at here, there is a water well here.”
said Peng Jia Mu, pointing at a spot on the map.
” nàshi yīnwèi dìdiǎn bùduì。
nǐmen kàn， zhège dìfang yǒu yī gè shuǐjǐng。”
 Péng jiā mù zhǐ zhe dìtú shàng de yī gè dìdiǎn shuō。		  
大家过来看地图。 All came closer to look at the map.
dàjiā guò láikàn dìtú。  
地图上有水井的地点有点远，要开车去。 The water well spot was a bit far, driving was needed.
dìtú shàng yǒu shuǐjǐng de dìdiǎn yǒudiǎn yuǎn， yào kāichē qù。  
有个队员说，
”我们的汽油不多了，开那么远，
汽油用完了怎么办?”		 One team member said,
“We don’t have much gas left. It’s too far.
What if the gas ran out?”
yǒu gè duìyuán shuō，
” wǒmen de qìyóu bù duō le， kāi nàme yuǎn，
qìyóu yòngwán le zěnmebàn?”		  
彭加木觉得他自己的建议是对的，
”如果找到了水井，
部队就不用飞机运水了，
飞机运水成本太高. 		Peng Jia Mu thought his own idea was right,
”If the water well is found,
then the army doesn’t need to send us water by air.
It’s too expensive to send water by air.
Péng jiā mù juéde tā zìjǐ de jiànyì shì duì de，
” rúguǒ zhǎo dàoliǎo shuǐjǐng，
bùduì jiù bùyòng fēijī yùn shuǐ le，
fēijī yùn shuǐ chéngběn tài gāo. 		 
找到了水井，对我们自己，
对以后来罗布泊的人都有帮助。”		 A discovered water well will not only benefit us,
but also benefit the people that will come to Lop Nur in the future.”

失踪 shī zōng [3] Missing
可是，队员们都很累。
罗布泊白天温度能有50C,
很热，风很大。
大家都走不动了，
想等部队送水来再说。		 However, the whole team was very tired.
The temperature of Lop Nur could go up to 50C in the day time.
It was very hot, and the wind was strong.
They didn’t want to move again,
they just wanted to wait for the army to deliver water for them and see.
kěshì， duìyuán men dōu hěn lèi。
Luóbùbó báitiān wēndù néng yǒu50C,
hěn rè， fēng hěn dà。

彭加木已经来过罗布泊三次，
对这个地方很了解，
他一边看地图，一边想着怎么去找水井。		 Peng Jia Mu had been to Lop Nur three times,
he had very good knowledge of that place.
He was looking at the map, and thinking about how to find the water well.
Péng jiā mù yǐjīng lái guò Luóbùbó sāncì，
duì zhège dìfang hěn liǎojiě，
tā yībiān kàn dìtú， yībiān xiǎng zhe zěnme qù zhǎo shuǐjǐng。		  
十点多的时候，彭加木一个人走了出去。 Sometime after ten, Peng went out alone.
shí diǎn duō de shíhou， Péng jiā mù yīgèrén zǒu le chūqù。  
中午十二点，部队又发来信息，
确定飞机送水的时间。		 Twelve o’clock at noon, the army sent a message again
to confirm the exact time of water delivery.
zhōngwǔ shí’èr diǎn， bùduì yòu fā lái xìnxī，
quèdìng fēijī sòng shuǐ de shíjiān。		  
队员很高兴，
想把部队的信息给队长看。
可是，他们没有看到队长。		 The team members were very happy,
they wanted to tell it to their chief.
However, they didn’t see him.
duìyuán hěn gāoxìng，
xiǎng bǎ bùduì de xìnxī gěi duìzhǎng kàn。
kěshì， tāmen méiyǒu kàn dào duìzhǎng。		  
队长经常会一个人出去看看，
大家没有觉得有什么不对。		 The chief used to look around on his own,
no one sensed anything strange.
duìzhǎng jīngcháng huì yīgèrén chūqù kànkan，
dàjiā méiyǒu juéde yǒu shénme bùduì。		  
可是过了一会儿，
有一个队员在车上看到彭加木的地图。
地图上有一张纸条，纸条上写着:		 Yet after a little while,
one team member found chief’s map on the car.
There was a paper note left on the map too, it was written:
 
kěshì guò le yīhuìr，
yǒu yī gè duìyuán zài chē shàng kàn dào Péng jiā mù de dìtú。
dìtú shàng yǒu yī zhāng zhǐtiáo， zhǐtiáo shàng xiě zhe:		  
“我往东去找水井。17/6 10:30 彭” I’m going east to search for water wells. 17/6 10:30 Peng
” wǒ wǎngdōng qù zhǎo shuǐjǐng。17/6 10:30 Péng”  
这个时候，大家才明白，
队长是一个人去找水了。		 Only at that time, the team realized
that chief went searching for water on his own.
zhège shíhou， dàjiā cái míngbai，
duìzhǎng shì yīgèrén qù zhǎo shuǐ le。		  
几个小时过去了，彭加木没有回来。 A few hours passed, Peng didn’t come back.
jǐge xiǎoshí guòqu le， Péng jiā mù méiyǒu huílai。  
失踪 shī zōng [4] Missing
下午三点的时候，外面的温度已经很高。 Three o’clock in the afternoon,
the temperature was already very high.
xiàwǔ sān diǎn de shíhou，
wàimiàn de wēndù yǐjīng hěn gāo。		  
队员们觉得不对，
就顺着彭加木的脚印开车去找他。		 The team suspected things went wrong,
they drove out to search for Peng following his footprints.
duìyuán men juéde bùduì，
jiù shùnzhe Péng jiā mù de jiǎoyìn kāichē qù zhǎo tā。		  
外面热，车里更热，
车走了一会儿，队员们就不想坐车了。		 It’s hot outside, it’s even hotter inside the car.
After a little while driving, the team didn’t want to sit in the car anymore.
wàimiàn rè， chē lǐ gèng rè，
chē zǒu le yīhuìr， duìyuán men jiù bùxiǎng zuòchē le。		  
他们下了车，顺着彭加木的脚印向前找去。 They got off the car, and followed along Peng’s footprints.
tāmen xià le chē， shùnzhe Péng jiā mù de jiǎoyìn xiàngqián zhǎo qù。  
走了很远，他们发现地上有队长坐过的痕迹,
还有一张糖纸。		 After a long walk, they found where their chief had been sitting for a break,
and a piece of candy wrapper beside.
zǒu le hěn yuǎn， tāmen fāxiàn dìshang yǒu duìzhǎng zuò guò de hénjì,
háiyǒu yī zhāng táng zhǐ。		  
那糖正是他们来的时候在路上买的。
可以确定队长在那坐过，还吃过糖。		 That was the candy that they bought on the way to Lop Nur.
It could be confirmed that the chief had been sitting there and ate a candy.
nà táng zhèngshì tāmen lái de shíhou zài lùshang mǎi de。
kěyǐ quèdìng duìzhǎng zài nà zuò guò， hái chī guò táng。		  
他们接着向前走。
队长的脚印在一个地点消失了。		 They kept moving ahead,
but the footprints disappeared at a certain point.
tāmen jiēzhe xiàngqián zǒu。
duìzhǎng de jiǎoyìn zài yī gè dìdiǎn xiāoshī le。		  
脚印消失的地方地面很硬，
后面没有脚印了。		 The surface of the ground where the footprints disappeared was rather stiff.
There were no footprints after that point.
jiǎoyìn xiāoshī de dìfang dìmiàn hěn yìng，
hòumian méiyǒu jiǎoyìn le。		  
队员们没有办法，只好往回走。 The team could do nothing but returning.
duìyuán men méiyǒu bànfǎ， zhǐhǎo wǎng huí zǒu。  
回到营地，他们把车灯打开，
向天空发信号弹，希望队长看到后能走回来。		 While they were back to the camp, they turned on the car lights.
They fired signal flares in hope that their chief could saw and walk back.

车灯开了一晚。
信号弹每半个小时发一次。
可是，彭加木没有回来。		 The car light was on all night.
Signal flares were fired every half hour.
However, Peng didn’t come back.
chē dēng kāi le yī wǎn。
xìnhào tán měi bànge xiǎoshí fā yīcì。
kěshì， Péng jiā mù méiyǒu huílai。		  
第二天，部队的飞机送来了水。
队员把队长失踪的消息告诉了飞行员.
于是飞行员在方圆20公里内低空飞行, 寻找彭加木。		 The next day, the army delivered water by air.
The team told the pilot that their chief was missing.
The pilot then flew low in circles over 20 square kilometer area.
dì’èrtiān， bùduì de fēijī sòng lái le shuǐ。
duìyuán bǎ duìzhǎng shīzōng de xiāoxi gàosu le fēixíngyuán.
yúshì fēixíngyuán zài fāngyuán 20 gōnglǐ nèi dīkōng fēixíng, xúnzhǎo Péng jiā mù。		  
从飞机上能看见地上的兔子跑,
但是却看不到彭加木。		 Even the rabbit could be spotted from the plane,
but Peng was nowhere to be found.
cóng fēijī shàng néng kànjiàn dìshang de tùzi pǎo,
dànshì què kànbùdào Péng jiā mù。		  
6月19日, 彭加木失踪的消息传到了北京，
北京向部队下命令:”一定要找到彭加木!”		 June 19, Peng’s missing was reported to Beijing.
Beijing gave order to the army:” Peng Jia Mu must be found!”
6 yuè19 rì, Péng jiā mù shīzōng de xiāoxi chuándào le Běijīng，
Běijīng xiàng bùduì xià mìnglìng:” yīdìngyào zhǎodào Péng jiā mù!”		  
就在那一天，部队用飞机向队员运送了汽油.
部队是不可以用飞机运汽油的。
可是北京的命令是, 用一切办法找到彭加木，
所以部队才可以用飞机运汽油。		 On that day, the army delivered gas to the team.
Gas was not allowed to be delivered by air in the army.
However the order from Beijing was, to find Peng by every possible way.
So the army gave approved to deliver gas by air.
jiù zài nà yī tiān， bùduì yòng fēijī xiàng duìyuán yùnsòng le qìyóu.
bùduì shì bùkěyǐ yòng fēijī yùn qìyóu de。
kěshì Běijīng de mìnglìng shì, yòng yīqiè bànfǎ zhǎodào Péng jiā mù，

有了汽油以后，队员们开车向东接着找，
但还是没有找到队长。		 Once gas was available, the team went on driving to the east to look for their chief.
But he was nowhere to be found.

dàn háishi méiyǒu zhǎodào duìzhǎng。		  
第二天，136人加入寻找, 在方圆30公里内仔细寻找，
一块石头，一根草都不放过。
飞机起飞12架次，
低空飞行，大面积寻找。		 The next day, 136 people joined the search within 30 square kilometers area.
Not a stone or a single blade of grass was missed.
12 sorties were flown.
The planes flew at low altitude while searching over vast areas.
dì’èrtiān，136 rén jiārù xúnzhǎo, zài fāngyuán 30 gōnglǐ nèi zǐxì xúnzhǎo，
yīkuài shítou， yī gēn cǎo dōu bù fàngguò。
fēijī qǐfēi 12 jiàcì，
dīkōng fēixíng， dà miànji xúnzhǎo。		  
彭加木走的时候带着两个相机，两个水壶，
和一个笔记本。
这次寻找进行了十天，没有发现一点线索。		 Peng Jia Mu carried two cameras, two water bottles,
and one notebook when he left.
This run of search lasted for 10 days, no valuable clue was found.
Péng jiā mù zǒu de shíhou dài zhe liǎng gè xiàngjī， liǎng gè shuǐhú，
hé yī gè bǐjìběn。
zhè cì xúnzhǎo jìnxíng le shí tiān， méiyǒu fāxiàn yīdiǎn xiànsuǒ。		  
在这十天里，
大家已经把罗布泊人无法生存的地方找过了。		 In those ten days,
they had searched all the non survivable area of Lop Nur.
zài zhè shí tiān lǐ，
dàjiā yǐjīng bǎ Luóbùbó rén wúfǎ shēngcún de dìfang zhǎo guò le。		  
下面就应该去更东的, 可以生存的地方寻找了。 The next step would be to search the far east and survivable area.
xiàmian jiù yīnggāi qù gèng dōng de, kěyǐ shēngcún de dìfang xúnzhǎo le。  
失踪 shī zōng [6] Missing
7月7日，第三次大寻找开始了。 July the 7th, the third run of search started.
7 yuè 7 rì， dì sāncì dà xúnzhǎo kāishǐ le。  
这次寻找的范围有4000多平方公里。
有181人，48辆车加入寻找，
飞机起飞29架次。		 This time the range of the search covered an area of 4000 square kilometers.
There were 181 people, 48 vehicles joined the search.
29 sorties of flight were committed to the search.

这个时候，有传言说彭加木逃往美国。
为了澄清谣言，北京命令进行第四次寻找. 		At that time, the rumor said that Peng Jia Mu escaped to the United States.
In order to break the rumor, Beijing ordered a forth search.

在11月10日至12月20日的41天里，
一千多军人和其他人员,
从彭加木失踪的地点找到了敦煌，
寻找范围有一千多平方公里,
可还是没有发现彭加木的痕迹。		 In the 41 days between November 10 and December 20,
1000 soldiers among others,
searched for Peng Jia Mu from where he disappeared to Dun Huang.
The searching coverage was as big as more than a thousands square kilometers.
However there were no trace of Peng Jia Mu.

对彭加木的失踪，大家有各种各样的想法。
彭加木是中国科学院新疆分院院长，
知名的科学家。		 People had all kinds of thoughts on the reason of Peng Jia Mu’s missing.
Peng was the president of Xin Jiang Division of Chinese Academy of Science,
a famous scientist.
duì Péng jiā mù de shīzōng， dàjiā yǒu gèzhǒnggèyàng de xiǎngfǎ。
Péng jiā mù shì Zhōngguó Kēxuéyuàn Xīnjiāng fēn yuàn yuànzhǎng，
zhīmíng de kēxuéjiā。 		 
他带在身上的相机和笔记本里，
有重要的关于罗布泊的科学发现。
有人认为他的失踪背后有惊人的秘密。		 The cameras and notebooks that he carried with him
contained important scientific discoveries of Lop Nur.
Some people thought there was astonishing secret behind his missing.
tā dài zài shēnshang de xiàngjī hé bǐjìběn lǐ，
yǒu zhòngyào de guānyú Luóbùbó de kēxué fāxiàn。
yǒurén rènwéi tā de shīzōng bèihòu yǒu jīngrén de mìmì。		  
那个时候，罗布泊是重要的军事基地。
没有部队的许可, 没有人可以进入罗布泊。
所以队员们在罗布泊的时候,
那块土地上, 除了他们，应该没有其他人。		 At that time, Lop Nur was an important military base.
No one could enter the area without permit granted from the army.
Therefore when the team was in Lop Nur,
there should be no others in the area other than them.
nàge shíhou， Luóbùbó shì zhòngyào de jūnshìjīdì。
méiyǒu bùduì de xǔkě, méiyǒu rén kěyǐ jìnrù Luóbùbó。
suǒyǐ duìyuán men zài Luóbùbó de shíhou,
nà kuài tǔdì shàng, chúle tāmen， yīnggāi méiyǒu qítā rén。 		 
彭加木走后, 在路上见到其他人的可能性很小。 The chance that Peng Jia Mu encountered someone else on his way was almost impossible.
Péng jiā mù zǒu hòu, zài lùshang jiàndào qítā rén de kěnéngxìng hěn xiǎo。  
失踪 shī zōng [7] Missing
对于彭加木的失踪，最可能的原因是，
他因为劳累倒在地上, 被沙埋了起来。		 As for the reason why Peng was missing, the most reasonable explanation was
that he was exhausted and collapsed. After that he got buried by the sand.
duìyú Péng jiā mù de shīzōng， zuì kěnéng de yuányīn shì，
tā yīnwèi láolèi dǎo zài dìshang, bèi shā mái le qilai。		  
但是，大家无法理解的是，
经过那么多次，那么多人仔仔细细的寻找，
为什么一点儿痕迹都找不到?		 However, it was hard for people to understand that,
after so many thorough searches,
why not even a tiny trace of him were even discovered.

jīngguò nàme duōcì， nàme duō rén zǐzǐxìxì de xúnzhǎo，

从那以后，彭加木的失踪成了罗布泊的一个谜。
后来去罗布泊的人都会想起这个失踪的科学家，
都会希望找到他。		 Since then on, the missing of Peng Jia Mu became a mystery of Lop Nur.
People that came to Lop Nur later on would think of that missing scientist,
would hope to find him.
cóng nà yǐhòu， Péng jiā mù de shīzōng chéngle Luóbùbó de yī gè mí。
hòulái qù Luóbùbó de rén dūhuì xiǎngqǐ zhège shīzōng de kēxuéjiā，
dōu huì xīwàng zhǎodào tā。		  
2005年，人们在罗布泊发现一具干尸。
干尸被运了回来，做了DNA测试。
可是结果证明它不是彭加木。		 2005, people discovered a dried corpse in Lop Nur.
The corpse was brought back for a DNA test.
However the result proved that it was not Peng Jia Mu.
2005 nián， rénmen zài Luóbùbó fāxiàn yī jù gānshī。
gānshī bèi yùn le huílai， zuò le DNA cèshì。
kěshì jiéguǒ zhèngmíng tā bùshì Péng jiā mù。		  
2007年，另一具干尸被发现。
这一次，大家觉得可能性很大。

This time, people thought it was quite possible Peng Jia Mu.
That’s because the corpse was wearing a Shanghai Brand watch, white shirt and blues pants.
2007 nián， lìngyī jù gānshī bèi fāxiàn。

这些和彭加木失踪时的穿着是一样的。
于是人们把干尸身上的取样带了回来，
取样有他的头发，衣服, 裤子，还有手表和皮带。		 Exactly the way Peng was wearing when he was missing.
Therefore people brought back samples of the corpse,
which includes his hair, clothes, pants, and his watch and belt.

彭加木的好友阎先生看过这些取样后，
认为它们都不是彭加木的。
带来的手表是女式的，而不是男式的。
衣服的纹路和彭加木穿的也不一样。
干尸是另一个二十多年前失踪的人，
但不是彭加木。		 Then Peng’s good friend Mr. Yan had a good look at those samples,
he believed they didn’t belong to Peng Jia Mu.
The watch being brought back was a women’s watch, not men’s.
The pattern of the clothes was not the same as that of Peng’s.
The died corpse was another missing person lost in more 20 years ago,
but it was not Peng Jia Mu.

彭加木的失踪是在六月份。
六月份的罗布泊天气多变, 最高温度有75C。
去过罗布泊的人都说，六月份是个危险的月份，
不要在六月份去罗布泊。		 Peng Jia Mu was missing in June.
The weather of Lop Nur in June was unstable. The highest temperature there could be 75C.
According to those who had been to Lop Nur, June was a dangerous month,
it’s better not to enter Lop Nur in June.
Péng jiā mù de shīzōng shì zài liùyuèfèn。
liùyuèfèn de Luóbùbó tiānqì duōbiàn, zuì gāo wēndù yǒu75C。

可是对于一个叫余纯顺的人来说，
六月份正是他最想征服罗布泊的时间。
在三十七岁前，余纯顺有过坎坷的人生, 和失败的婚姻.
三十七岁那年, 还在工厂工作的他,
再也不想这样平凡地过一生. 		However for a man named Yu Chun Shun,
June was exactly the right time for him to conquer Lop Nur.
Before he was 37 years old, Yu Chun Shun had a rocky road of life and a broken marriage.
At the age of 37, being a worker in a factory,
he didn’t want to continue his mediocre life anymore.

Crews of Shanghai TV escorted him to Lop Nur
in order to make a TV program of his hiking journey through Lop Nur.

为彭加木开过车的司机说过,
”不要在六月份进入罗布泊，那是个危险的月份。”
可是余纯顺就是要向人们证明，
六月的罗布泊，是可以被人征服的。		 The driver that had worked for Peng Jia Mu before had said that,
“Don’t enter Lop Nur in June, June is a dangerous month.”
But Yu Chun Sun just wanted to prove
that to conquer Lop Nur in June by human is possible.

失踪 shī zōng [9] Missing
为这次徒步穿越,大家做了很充分的准备。
是余纯顺八年探险中，准备的最充分的一次。		 For this hiking adventure, people did very good preparation work.
It was the best prepared adventure among the whole eight years of Yu’s exploration.

1996年6月10日, 摄制组开车进入罗布泊，
和余纯顺一起, 一路埋下水和食物,
开车走完一遍计划好的路线。
再一起返回营地。		 June 10, 1996. The TV crews drove into Lop Nur.
They buried water and food along the route together with Yu Chun Shun.
All of them drove along the planned route once
and returned to the camp.
1996 nián 6 yuè 10 rì, shèzhì zǔ kāichē jìnrù Luóbùbó，
hé yú chún shùn yīqǐ, yīlù mái xiàshuǐ hé shíwù,
kāichē zǒu wán yībiàn jìhuà hǎo de lùxiàn。
zài yīqǐ fǎnhuí yíngdì。		  
第二天早上，摄制组开车把余纯顺送到出发点。
组员们问余纯顺要不要带GPS,他说不用，
他是拿着地图孤身走遍中国的，这次也一样可以。
余纯顺和组员们告别后，背着背包孤身走进了罗布泊。		 The next morning, the crews dropped Yu Chun Shun to the starting point.
The crews asked Yu whether he wanted to bring GPS with him, he refused.
He said that he used paper map to hike through China before, this time it should be good enough too.
With his bag on his back, Yu said goodbye to the crews and walked into Lop Nur alone.

看着余纯顺的背影，大家好像看到了二十六年前的彭加木。
不过这一次，他们准备得很充分，不缺水，
不缺油，不缺食物，有GPS，有各种各样的先进装备。
还有全国人民的祝福和关注。
徒步征服罗布泊一定会成功!		 Looking at his back, people felt like they were looking at the leaving Peng Jia Mu 26 years ago.
But this time, they were very well prepared. They were not short of water,
gas, or food. They had GPS, and all kinds of advanced equipments.
There also had blessings and attentions from all around China.
The adventure was sure to be a success.

下午三点，摄制组又从营地开车出来，
顺着余纯顺行走的方向开去。
经过第一个埋水点，
组员们发现水和食物都在，
余纯顺没有在这休息过。		 Three o’clock in the afternoon, the TV crews drove out of their camp again.
They drove towards the direction where Yu’s went.
When they passed by the first spot of buried water,
they found that both water and food were still there,
Yu Chun Shun didn’t take his break there.
xiàwǔ sān diǎn， shèzhì zǔ yòu cóng yíngdì kāichē chūlái，
shùnzhe yú chún shùn xíngzǒu de fāngxiàng kāi qù。
jīngguò dìyī gè mái shuǐ diǎn，
zǔ yuán men fāxiàn shuǐ hé shíwù dōu zài，
yú chún shùn méiyǒu zài zhè xiūxi guò。		  
失踪 shī zōng [10] Missing
四点半的时候，车子追上了余纯顺。
组员们下了车，追着正在行走的余纯顺问这问那。
余纯顺一边擦汗,一边笑着对他们说，
”从出发到现在，我一次没休息。
今天会早点睡，明天早点走。
剩下的路我一天半就能走完!”		 Around 4 o’clock, the car caught up with Yu Chun Shun.
The crews jumped out of their car and surrounded Yu with this and that questions.
Yu Chun Shun answered them with a smile while wiping away sweat,
“From start to now I haven’t had a single break.
I’m going to sleep early today and get up early tomorrow.
The rest of the journey, I should be able to finish within one and half day.”
sì diǎn bàn de shíhou， chēzi zhuīshàng le yú chún shùn。
zǔ yuán men xià le chē， zhuī zhe zhèngzài xíngzǒu de yú chún shùn wèn zhè wèn nà。
yú chún shùn yībiān cā hàn, yībiān xiào zhe duì tāmen shuō，
” cóng chūfā dàoxiànzài， wǒ yīcì méi xiūxi。
jīntiān huì zǎodiǎn shuì， míngtiān zǎodiǎn zǒu。
shèngxià de lù wǒ yī tiān bàn jiù néng zǒu wán!”		  
组员们又上了车，接着向前进桥开去。
在他们的计划里，前进桥是余纯顺两天后和他们会合的地方.
余纯顺一边走，一边向车子里的组员们挥手。
”我们前进桥见!”他大声说。		 The crews got back in their car and went on driving to Qian Jin Bridge.
In their plan, that was the place that Yu Chun Shun supposed to join them two days later.
Yu Chun Shun waved and shouted to them while walking,
“Let’s meet at Qian Jin Bridge!”
zǔ yuán men yòu shàng le chē， jiēzhe xiàng qián-jìn qiáo kāi qù。
zài tāmen de jìhuà lǐ， qián-jìn qiáo shì yú chún shùn liǎng tiān hòu hé tāmen huìhé de dìfang.
yú chún shùn yībiān zǒu， yībiān xiàng chēzi lǐ de zǔ yuán men huīshǒu。
” wǒmen qiánjìn qiáo jiàn!” tā dàshēng shuō。		  
与余纯顺告别后，摄制组的车向前进桥开去。
第二天中午，也就是6月12日，他们开到了前进桥。
这里是他们的新营地，
他们会在这里等待余纯顺。
按计划，余纯顺会在6月13日与他们会合。		 Bidding good bye to Yu Chun Shun, the TV crews kept driving toward Qian Jin Bridge.
At noon next day, June 12, they arrived at Qian Jin Bridge,
which became a new campsite for them.
They would have to stay there and wait for Yu Chun Shun.
Yu Chun Shun would meet them there on June 13.

6月12日晚饭的时候，一阵大风卷着沙土向他们扑来。
正要吃晚饭的组员们忙钻进车子里。		 In the following evening of June 12, a burst of sandy gusty wind roared toward them.
They just planned to eat dinner, but they rushed into their car instead.
6 yuè 12 rì wǎnfàn de shíhou， yīzhèn dàfēng juǎn zhe shātǔ xiàng tāmen pū lái。
zhèngyào chī wǎnfàn de zǔ yuán men máng zuānjìn chēzi lǐ。 		 
他们明白这是沙尘暴来了。沙尘暴一直没停，
到6月13日早上，风还很大。
组员们开始担心余纯顺的处境。
他们等了一天，余纯顺没有出现。		 They realized that it was sandstorm. The sandstorm didn’t stop.
Even till the morning of June 13, the wind was still strong.
They started to worry about Yu Chun Shun's plight.
They waited for him for the whole day, he didn’t show up.

dào 6 yuè 13 rì zǎoshang， fēng hái hěn dà。

6月14日,组员们开始顺着余纯顺的行走路线寻找他。
找了一天都没有找到。
于是他们把余纯顺失踪的消息发了出去，
请求救援。		 June 14, the team started to look for Yu Chun Shun along his hiking route.
But he was not found after a whole day’s search.
Then they sent out massages of Yu’s missing,
and asked for help.
6 yuè 14 rì, zǔ yuán men kāishǐ shùnzhe yú chún shùn de xíngzǒu lùxiàn xúnzhǎo tā。
zhǎo le yī tiān dōu méiyǒu zhǎodào。
yúshì tāmen bǎ yú chún shùn shīzōng de xiāoxi fā le chūqù，
qǐngqiú jiùyuán。 		 
在接下来的几天里，组员们继续分头寻找。
17日, 第一架救援的飞机飞来了。
组员坐上飞机一起寻找，但没有找到。
18日，第二架救援飞机飞来了。
他们再一次坐上飞机一起寻找余纯顺。		 In the following days, the crews kept searching in groups from all directions.
June 17, the first plane arrived.
The crews got onto the plane and scouted together, however they didn’t find him.
June 18, the second plane came.
They got onto the plane once again to search for Yu Chun Shun.

17 rì, dìyī jià jiùyuán de fēijī fēi lái le。

45分钟后，飞行员让组员到飞机前部，
他指着地面上一个蓝点问，”那是什么?”
“那是余纯顺的帐篷啊!”组员叫了起来。		 45 minutes later, the pilot asked the crews to come forward,
he pointed at a blue dot and asked,”What is that? ”
“That has to be Yu Chun Shun’s tent!” the crews cried out.
45 fēnzhōng hòu， fēixíngyuán ràng zǔ yuán dào fēijī qiánbù，
tā zhǐ zhe dìmiàn shàngyīge lán diǎn wèn，” nàshi shénme?”
 ” nàshi yú chún shùn de zhàngpeng ā!” zǔ yuán jiào le qilai。		  
飞机降落在帐篷的20米以外。
大家一边喊着”余老师!余老师!”
一边向余纯顺的帐篷跑去。		 The plane landed 20 meters away from the tent.
They all ran to the tent shouting:”Teacher Yu! Teacher Yu!”
fēijī jiàngluò zài zhàngpeng de 20 mǐ yǐwài。
dàjiā yībiān hǎn zhe” yú lǎoshī! yú lǎoshī!”
yībiān xiàng yú chún shùn de zhàngpeng pǎo qù。 		 
当人们跑到帐篷边，余纯顺并没有出现。
但是人们闻到一阵恶臭。
往帐篷里一看，余纯顺一动不动地躺在里面。
已经死亡好几天了。		 When they came near the tent, Yu Chun Shun wasn’t around.
But they smelled an awful stench.
They peered inside the ten and found out that Yu Chun Shun was lying there motionlessly.
He had died for days.
dāng rénmen pǎo dào zhàngpeng biān， yú chún shùn bìng méiyǒu chūxiàn。
dànshì rénmen wéndào yīzhèn èchòu。
wǎng zhàngpeng lǐ yī kàn， yú chún shùn yīdòngbùdòng de tǎng zài lǐmiàn。
yǐjīng sǐwáng hǎo jǐtiān le。		  
余纯顺遇难的消息让大家很悲痛。
他的死因是脱水而死.
但最主要的原因是,
他在一个右转路口没有右转, 而是直行. 		People were devastated by the death of Yu Chun Shun.
His cause of death was dehydration.
The main reason that led to his death was
that he went straight forward at a point where he was supposed to make a right turn.
yú chún shùn yùnàn de xiāoxi ràng dàjiā hěn bēitòng。
tā de sǐyīn shì tuōshuǐ ér sǐ.
dàn zuì zhǔyào de yuányīn shì,

迷路以后他就找不到下一个埋水点了.
最后进入缺水, 缺食物的处境.
而6月10日他亲自埋下的水和食物离他只有3公里.		 Being lost, he couldn’t find the next spot where he buried water and food.
It finally left him with no water nor food.
Yet the water and food that he buried on June 10 was only 3 kilometers away.

彭加木和余纯顺,
两个有着强烈的愿望要征服罗布泊的人，
最终都没有走出这片沙漠。
彭加木的遗体至今没有找到.		 Peng Jia Mu and Yu Chun Shun,
two men with strong desire to conquer Lop Nur,
weren’t able to walk out of the desert.
The body of Peng Jia Mu remained unfound up to today.

从卫星上看，罗布泊象一个巨大的耳朵。

一边无声无息地吞噬着生命。		 Looking from the satellite, Lop Nur is like a giant ear.
It is sending mysterious massages to the universe
while engulfing lives silently.
