The twenty-four hours in a day are divided in

two: the a.m. hours (from midnight to midday)

and the p.m. hours (from midday to midnight).

To tell the time a number between one (which is

always feminine) and twenty-four followed by

the word 'heure(s)' (o'clock) is used.

Example:  Je vais rester jusqu'а dix-neuf

                   heures. (19:00)

                   Soyez au port а cinq heures. (5:00)

To indicate the time more precisely, minutes

may be added:  the hour is followed by 'et' (and)

and the number of minutes followed by the

word 'minute(s)' (minutes).

Example:  Ma montre s'est arrкtйe а deux

                   heures et vingt minutes. (2:20)

Note. Et and the word minute(s) tend to be left out.

Example: Il est deux heures vingt. (2:20)

Both a.m. and p.m. times may be indicated

using a number between one and eleven

followed by the expression 'du matin' (a.m.) or

'du soir' (p.m.).

Example:  Rendez-vous ici а cinq heures

                   du matin. (5:00)

                   Il est cinq heures du soir. (17:00)

Midi is used for midday and minuit for midnight.

Example:  Midi ! Il est temps de partir !

                   Ne travaille pas jusqu'а minuit !

The hour is often separated into four parts of

fifteen minutes each. This allows an

approximate time to be expressed.

Example:  six heures (6:00)

                   six heures et quart (6:15)

                   six heures et demie (6:30)

Once past the half-hour of any given hour the

time is expressed using the minutes remaining

before the following hour.

Example:  sept heures moins le quart (6:45)

'Et quart' (quarter past), 'et demie' (half past) and 'moins le quart' (quarter to) are never

used with numbers greater than 11. There are

therefore two ways of expressing, for

example, 19.45: 'il est dix-neuf heures

quarante-cinq' (it's seven forty-five) or 'il est

huit heures moins le quart' (it's quarter to

eight).

Выражения et quart, et demie и moins le quart
