Je te l'avais bien dit! I told you so!
1 M. Duval passa les premières journées de ses vacances presque entièrement sur la grève (1),
2 en maillot de bain, à se rôtir paresseusement au soleil,
3 pendant que les enfants faisaient des châteaux de sable (2),
4 ou essayaient d'attraper des crabes et des crevettes.
5 Quant à Mme Duval, prise d'une sorte de frénésie ménagère,
6 elle sortait à peine pour faire quelques emplettes (3) chez les fournisseurs (4) :
7 boucher, boulanger, épicier, marchand de légumes, etc.
8 Aidée de la femme de ménage, elle avait entrepris un nettoyage à fond (5).
9 — Tu as tort, disait M. Duval, de ne pas profiter (6) du beau temps.
10 Qui sait combien (7) il durera?
11 Mais elle ne voulait rien entendre, et continuait sa chasse à la poussière et aux toiles d'araignées.
12 Enfin, le soir du quatrième jour, elle se déclara satisfaite.
13 Et le lendemain, naturellement, il plut.
14 — C'est bien ma chance! soupira-t-elle.
15 Et M. Duval eut tout juste (8) la force de se retenir et de ne pas proclamer triomphalement :
16 — Je te l'avais bien dit!		 — 1 M. D. spent the first days of his holidays almost entirely on the beach,
— 2 in a bathing-suit, basking (roasting) himself lazily in the sun,
— 3 while the children were building (making) sand-castles,
— 4 or trying to catch crabs and shrimps.
— 5 As for Mme D., seized with (taken of) a sort of domestic frenzy,
— 6 she scarcely did more than go out (hardly went out in order to) to make a few purchases from the tradespeople (purveyors') :
— 7 butcher, baker, grocer, greengrocer, etc.
— 8 Helped by the charwoman, she had undertaken a "thorough" cleaning ("to bottom").
— 9 You are wrong, M. D. would say, not to take advantage (profit) of the fine weather.
— 10 Who knowns how long (much) it will last?
— 11 But she would not listen to reason (hear nothing), and went on with (continued) her hunt for (at) dust and cobwebs ("linens of spiders").
— 12 Finally, on the evening of the fourth day, she declared she was satisfied.
— 13 And the next day, of course, it rained.
— 14 That is just (welt) my luck! she sighed.
— 15 And M. D. just managed to check himself (had all just the strength) to hold himself back and not proclaim triumphantly :
— 16 I (had) told you so (it well to you) !

— 3 I barely escaped being run over (squashed) by a reckless driver.
— 4 He came out of the turning at full speed, and without blowing his horn (horning) ;
— 5 I jumped (made a jump) aside, and his mudguard (wing) grazed me.
— 6 Did you take his number?
— 7 No, I could not make il out ("distinguish it"); the number-plate was covered with dust.
(1) Faillir n'est pas tout à fait to fail, qui se dit échouer, ou, commercialement : faire faillite.
Il s'emploie surtout au participe passé : Il a failli mourir : He very nearly died.
(2) Un chauffard : un mauvais chauffeur ou un chauffeur imprudent.
(3) Le numéro, et non le nombre, quand il s'agit d'un ordinal number.
