On finit par arriver One gets there in the end (finishes by arriving)
1 Quand les Duval descendirent (1) du train, à la gare de Saint-Malo,
2 ils trouvèrent sur le quai un ami du propriétaire de la villa,
3 qui les attendait (2) comme convenu, pour les accompagner.
4 Ils retirèrent leurs gros bagages, à la consigne de l'arrivée (3),
5 et prirent place (4) dans un taxi, avec leur guide.
6 — Ce n'est qu'à cinq minutes à peine, dit celui-ci.
7 J'ai fait ouvrir les fenêtres de bonne heure ce matin, pour aérer un peu.
8 — C'est très aimable à vous (5), dit Mme Duval.
Je suppose que nous trouverons facilement une femme de ménage?
9 — Oh! cela ne manque pas!
Je puis (6) vous recommander une veuve de marin,
10 très honnête et travailleuse (7), qui habite tout près;
11 elle sera heureuse de gagner quelque argent.
12 Mais nous y voici!
13 La villa « Les Bégonias » était précédée d'un petit jardin,
14 où poussaient (8) des géraniums et, naturellement des bégonias,
15 ainsi que (9) d'autres fleurs et quelques arbres fruitiers.
16 Une vigne vierge grimpait le long des murs de granit,
17 presque jusqu'au toit d'ardoises.
18 Les persiennes étaient peintes en blanc.
19 — Quelle tranquillité! fit M. Duval avec satisfaction.		 — 1 When the D. got out of the train, at Saint-Malo station,
— 2 they found on the platform a friend of the owner of the cottage,
— 3 who was waiting for them, as arranged, to accompany them.
— 4 They took (drew back) their heavy luggage from (at) the cloak-room (of the arrival),

— 8 That is very kind of you, said Mme D.
I suppose we shall find a charwoman easily ?
— 9 Oh! there is no (it does not) lack of them!
I can recommend you a sailor's widow,
— 10 very honest and a good worker, who lives quite close;
— 11 she will be glad (happy) to earn little money.
— 12 But here we are !
13 The cottage "The Begonias", stood in a little garden,
14 in which (where) grew geraniums and of course, begonias,
— 15 as well (thus) as other flowers and a few fruit-trees.
— 16 A wild (virgin) vine crept up (climbed along) the granite walls,
— 17 almost to (until) the slate roof.
— 18 The venetian (Persian) blinds were painted (in) white.
— 19 How peaceful! ("What tranquillity!") said M. D. contentedly.
