Cent huitième (108e) Leçon  
Marius (1) à la chasse aux loups Marius wolf-shooting
1 — Si j'ai vu des loups en Russie? dit Marius. Écoutez un peu.
2 Je traversais une immense forêt en traîneau, à la tombée de la nuit,
3 lorsqu'une bande de loups affamés (2) se mit à notre poursuite.
4 Le cocher fouetta ses chevaux, qui partirent ventre à terre (3).
5 Moi, je pris tranquillement mon fusil, visai le plus gros, et l'abattis (4).
6 Aussitôt, toute la bande s'arrêta, et se mit à le dévorer.
7 Mais, cinq minutes après, ils nous poursuivaient de nouveau,
8 plus menaçants que jamais.
9 Gardant tout mon sang-froid, j'en tuai encore un,
10 et la même chose se reproduisit (5).
11 Cinq fois, dix fois, je recommençai, et, leur camarade dévoré,
12 les loups revenaient à la charge.
13 Cependant, leur nombre diminuait (6),
14 à la fin, il n'en restait plus qu'un, énorme...
15 — Oui, il devait être (7) énorme, en effet,
puisqu'il avait tous les autres dans le ventre!
16 — C'est vrai, dit Marius sans se troubler,
17 je remarquai bien aussi qu'il courait assez lourdement...		 — 1 Have I (Whether I have) seen any wolves in Russia? said M. Just listen.
— 2 I was crossing an immense forest, in a sledge, at nightfall,
— 3 when a pack (band) of starving wolves set out in pursuit of us.

— 6 Immediately (As soon), the whole pack stopped ("arrested itself") and set to devouring him.
— 7 But, five minutes after, they were pursuing us again (of new),
— 8 more threatening than ever.
— 9 Keeping perfectly cool ("all my cold blood"), I killed another one,
— 10 and the same thing happened again (reproduced itself).
— 11 Five times, ten times, I repeated this ("recommenced"), and, as soon as they had eaten their comrade,
— 12 the wolves returned (came back) to the charge,
— 13 However, their number was decreasing (diminishing) ;
— 14 finally (at the end) there remained only one (of them), an enormous one ...
— 15 Yes, he certainly must have been enormous
since he had all the others inside him ("in the belly") !
— 16 Quite true, said M. without disconcerting (troubling) himself,
— 17 I did notice (noticed well), too, that he was running pretty (enough) heavily.
