Le roman (1) du général T. General T's romance
1 Le général T. — il n'était alors que le lieutenant (2) T. —
2 assista (3) un jour à l'incendie (4) d'un pensionnat de jeunes filles.
3 Le bâtiment était tout en flammes, et menaçait de s'écrouler,
4 quand on s'aperçut avec horreur qu'une des pensionnaires manquait à l'appel.
5 Alors, une des jeunes filles s'élança sans hésiter dans la maison en feu,
6 et en ressortit (5) quelques instants après,
7 portant dans ses bras sa camarade évanouie.
8 — Voilà la femme qu'il me faut! s'écria en lui-même le lieutenant,
9 tandis qu'on entourait l'héroïne (6) en la félicitant.
10 Et, en effet, il l'épousa (7) quelque temps après.
11 Mais par la suite, la jeune fille énergique devint une épouse encore plus énergique,
12 et les mauvaises langues disent que le général,
13 quand il voyait par hasard un incendie,
14 s'éloignait hâtivement, en murmurant dans sa barbe (8) d'affreuses imprécations.		 1 General T. — he was then only lieutenant T.
— 2 was present one day when there was a fire at a girl's boarding-school.
— 3 The building was all in flames, and threatened to collapse,
4 when it was noticed with horror that one of the girl-boarders was missing (at the roll-call).
— 5 Then without hesitating, one of the girls rushed (launched herself) into the burning ("in fire") house,
— 6 and re-emerged (came back out of) from it a few moments later,
— 7 carrying her unconscious (fainted) friend (comrade) in her arms.
— 8 There is the wife for me! lieutenant T. exclaimed to (in) himself
— 9 while the heroine was being surrounded and congratulated (active form!).
— 10 And indeed (in effect) he married her some little time after.
— 11 But in time ("by the sequel"), the energetic girl became a still more energetic wife (spouse),
— 12 and unkind (bad) tongues say that the general,
— 13 when he happened to see (saw perchance) a fire,
— 14 would hastily remove himself, muttering awful curses under his breath (dire imprecations in his beard).

— 3 Certainly (But yes), here is a box of matches.
— 4 Many thanks; have you read the news of that terrible fire?
— 5 No, it has escaped my notice (me); are there any victims?
— 6 Three persons burnt alive, and four injured (wounded) (in) jumping out of (by) the windows.
