Tant pis pour Mme Thomas! So much the worse for Mme Thomas!
1 M. Duval est en plein travail à son bureau, lorsque (1) le téléphone sonne.
2 Il décroche (2) le récepteur :
— Allô! — Allô! C'est l'épicerie Martin?
3 — Non, Madame, vous vous trompez. Et il raccroche.
4 Trois minutes après, nouvelle (N. 3) sonnerie.
— Allô! l'épicerie Martin?
5 — Mais non, je vous dis que vous faites erreur (3) !
6 Encore quelques minutes, et le téléphone sonne de nouveau (4).
7 — Allô! l'épicerie Martin? — Oui, madame; que désirez-vous?
8 — Ici Mme Thomas; envoyez-moi tout de suite un kilo de jambon,
9 une boîte de petits pois, une douzaine d'œufs, et un litre d'huile d'olives.
10 — Très bien, madame, vous pouvez compter sur moi!
11 Et M. Duval se remet au travail, tout en pensant :
12 — Tant pis pour elle!
C'était le seul moyen de s'en débarrasser!		 — 1 M. D. is hard at (in full) work at his office, when the telephone rings.
— 2 He unhooks the receiver :
Hello! — Hello! Is that (That is) M.'s grocery (the M. grocery)?
— 3 No, Madam, you are mistaken (deceive yourself). And he hangs up,
— 4 Three minutes afterwards, there is another ring.
— Hello! M.'s grocery?
— 5 No it isn't ( But no), I tell you you have made (make) a mistake (error).
— 6 A few minutes more, and the telephone rings again.
— 7 Hello! M.'s grocery? — Yes, Madam; what can I do for you?
— 8 Mme Th. speaking. Send me at once one kilog. of ham,
— 9 a tin of green peas, one dozen eggs, and one litre of olive oil.
— 10 Very well, Madam, you may rely (count) on me !
— 11 And M. D. sets to work again, thinking the while :
— 12 So much the worse for her!
It was the only way (means) of getting rid of her !

— 7 it is the same with me : I never know how many I's there are (it needs of l's) in (at) " tranquillity ".
— 8 There should be (of them) two.
— 9 Thanks; so (there) we are quits.
