Échange (1) de leçons Exchange of lessons
1 Paul venait maintenant chaque après-midi au bureau de M. Duval.
2 Il lisait tranquillement un journal pendant que M. Duval travaillait,
3 et quand celui-ci avait un moment de libre (2),
4 ils causaient de choses et d'autres.
5 Parfois (3) M. Duval était appelé dans le bureau d'à côté,
6 et alors Paul bavardait avec la jolie Mlle Thérèse.
7 Elle ne savait pas du tout l'anglais,
8 et il s'amusait à lui en apprendre quelques mots,
9 qu'elle prononçait de la façon la plus drôle.
10 Paul prit (4) si bien goût à ce jeu
11 qu'il lui proposa de continuer les leçons en dehors du (5) bureau.
12 Elle accepta, et les deux jeunes gens se retrouvèrent chaque soir.
13 Cependant, ils n'en dirent rien à ce bon M. Duval.		 — 1 Paul was now coming every afternoon to M. D.s office.
— 2 He would read a newspaper quietly while M. D. worked.
— 3 and when the latter had a moment to spare ("of free"),
— 4 they would talk of one thing and another ("of things and of others").
— 5 At times, M. D. was called into the next office ("of aside"),
— 6 and then P. would chat with (the) pretty Mlle Th.
— 7 She did not know any English at all,
— 8 and he amused himself teaching (to teach) her (of if) a few words,
— 9 which she would pronounce in the funniest (most "droll") way,
— 10 Paul took such a liking to ("so well taste to") this game
— 11 that he suggested to her that they would continue (proposed to her to continue) the lessons outside (of) the office.
— 12 She accepted, and the two young people met (found each other again) every evening.
— 13 However, they did not mention (said nothing of) it to the good M. D.

— 3 Let us go for a little stroll out of doors, to stretch ("un-numb") our legs a little.
— 4 To tell the truth (" To true say"), I feel (myself) a little lazy;
— 5 won't you rather play (at the) cards?
— 6 Very well, let us have (make) a game.
(1) Engourdir: to numb; dégourdir : to take the numbness off.
— C est un dégourdi : He is a smart one.

(2) Un jeu de cartes : A pack of cards.
— Une partie de cartes : A game of cards.
— Ceci n'est qu'un jeu pour moi : This is only (child's) play for me.
— Aimez-vous le jeu d'échecs ? Do you like the game of chess?
— Oui, faisons une partie : Yes, let us have a game.
