Le dimanche matin On Sunday morning
1 — Je crois que nous aurons beau temps, dit M. Duval.
2 — Oui, répond sa femme, il a plu (1) cette nuit, mais les trottoirs sont déjà secs (2) ;
3 il sera quand même (3) plus prudent de prendre nos parapluies.
4 — Les enfants sont prêts? (4)
5 — Oui, ils jouent dans le salon.
6 — Il est neuf heures moins cinq; le jeune Martin ne va pas tarder (5) à arriver.
7 — Il est gentil, ce garçon, quoiqu'un (6) peu timide.
8 — Oh! s'il ne parle guère (7), c'est qu'il ne connaît pas encore assez bien le français.
9 — Tu crois? Après tout, c'est bien possible.
10 — Si tu m'avais vu quand j'étais en Angleterre,
11 j'osais à peine dire un mot,
12 tellement j'avais peur de me tromper (8).
13 — Tu t'es bien rattrapé (9) depuis!
dit Mme Duval, en pouffant de rire.		 1 I believe we shall have fine weather, says M. D.
— 2 Yes, answers his wife; it (has) rained last (this) night, but the pavements (sidewalks) are already dry ;
3 it will be (all the same) safer (more prudent) to take our umbrellas, though.
— 4 Are the children ready?
— 5 Yes, they are playing in the drawing-room.
— 6 It is five minutes to nine; (the) young Martin will not be long coming.
— 7 He is nice, that boy, although a little shy (timid).
— 8 Oh! if he does not speak much, it is because he does not know French well enough yet.
— 9 Do you think so (believe)? After all, it is quite (well) possible.
— 10 If you had seen me when I was in England,
— 11 I hardly dared to speak (say) a word,
— 12 I was so (so much I was) afraid of making a mistake.
— 13 You have made up for it ("have well caught up yourself") since !
says Mme D., choking with ("puffing of") laughter.
