1 C'est Mme Duval qui est venue ouvrir la porte à Paul.
2 Il lui explique qui il est, en lui remettant (1) la lettre de son père.
3 — Entrez donc, monsieur; mon mari vient justement de rentrer;
4 il sera ravi de vous voir!
5 Débarrassez-vous (2) de votre pardessus!
6 Et elle annonce à M. Duval, qui se montre à la porte de droite :
7 —- C'est une visite pour toi (N. 1) : Monsieur Martin, qui vient d'Angleterre.
8 M. Duval prend la lettre qu'elle lui tend;
9 mais à peine y a-t-il jeté un coup d'œil qu'il s'écrie :
10 — Soyez le bienvenu! Quelle heureuse (3) surprise !
11 Et comment vont vos parents, toujours bien, j'espère?
12 Mais je vous laisse debout! Entrez donc ici, et asseyez-vous!
13 Le voyage ne vous a pas trop fatigué? (4)
14 Marguerite, apporte donc le porto!
15 Paul, ne pouvant placer un mot, se contente de sourire largement.		 1 It is Mrs. D. who has (is) come to open the door for (to) P.

— 10 Welcome to you! What a happy surprise !
— 11 And how are your parents, keeping (always) well, I hope ?
— 12 But I am leaving you standing ! Do come in here, and sit down !
— 13 The journey has not tired you too much?
— 14 Margaret, do bring the port-wine!
— 15 Paul, unable (not being able) to place a word, contents himself with smiling broadly.
