Il n'y a pas moyen de faire autrement It can't be helped
1 Paul était déjà à Paris depuis trois jours,
2 et il commençait à connaître (1) un peu la ville,
3 lorsque l'idée lui vint de faire usage de sa lettre d'introduction,
4 et de se présenter chez les Duval.
5 Quinze ans auparavant (2), M. Duval avait passé un mois en Angleterre,
6 comme pensionnaire (3) chez les parents de Paul.
7 Mais celui-ci ne se rappelait pas l'avoir vu :
8 il était alors trop jeune.
9 Son père était venu plusieurs fois à Paris dans l'intervalle,
10 et chaque fois, il avait rendu visite aux Duval.
11 Paul savait que M. Duval était occupé dans la journée.
12 C'est pourquoi il décida d'aller le voir vers six heures et demie du soir.
13 Il hésitait cependant, craignant (4) d'avoir l'air de vouloir se faire inviter (5) à dîner.
14 Mais il n'y avait pas moyen de faire autrement.		 1 Paul had already been in Paris (was already in P. since) three days,
— 2 and he was beginning to know the town a little,
— 3 when it occurred (the idea came) to him to make use ("usage") of his letter of introduction,
4 and to present himself at the Duvals'.
— 5 Fifteen years before, M. D. had spent a month in England,
— 6 as a lodger in the house of (at) Paul's parents.
— 7 But the latter (this one) did not remember having seen him :
— 8 he was too young at the time.
— 9 His father had been several times to Paris in the interval,
— 10 and each time he had called on (rendered visit to) the Duvals.
— 11 P. knew that M. D. was at work during the day.
— 12 And so, (this is why) he decided to go and see him about (towards) 6.30 in (of) the evening.
— 13 He hesitated, however, fearing to look (have the air) as if he wanted to get invited (to want to make himself invited) to dinner.
— 14 But it could not be helped (there was not means to do otherwise).
   
EXERCICE.  
— 1 Je craignais (ou j'avais peur) de ne pas vous trouver à la maison à cette heure-ci.
— 2 Effectivement, je n'y suis pas d'habitude avant sept heures;
— 3 mais ce soir, je suis rentré plus tôt.
— 4 C'est une chance; je voulais vous demander si vous êtes libre dimanche prochain.
— 5 Dimanche? mais oui, certainement.
— 6 Alors, je compte sur vous sans faute.
— 7 Je n'y manquerai pas.		 1 I feared I would not find you at home at this hour.
— 2 Indeed (Effectively), I am not usually in(there) before seven;
— 3 but this evening I have come home (am re-entered) earlier.
— 4 That is a piece of luck; I wanted to ask you whether you are free next Sunday.
— 5 Sunday? Why, (But) yes, certainly.
— 6 Then, I count on you for certain (without fault).
— 7 I shall not fail (to it).
