Bonne nuit! Good night!
1 Il n'était pas encore onze heures lorsque (1) Paul rentra à l'hôtel.
2 Il avait sommeil (N. 2) et monta tout droit à sa chambre.
3 Il se déshabilla (2), se brossa les dents, et se mit au lit (3).
4 Mais il ne put s'endormir (4) tout de suite,
5 Le bruit de la rue le tenait éveillé.
6 Pourtant, la fenêtre et les persiennes étaient fermées (5).
7 Alors, il ralluma (6) l'électricité,
8 et se mit à lire un journal français,
9 qu'il avait acheté et mis dans sa poche.
10 En fixant son attention sur ce qu'il lisait,
11 il oublia peu à peu le bruit de la rue.
12 Au bout (7) d'un quart d'heure, il éteignit (8) de nouveau,
13 et s'endormit profondément.		 1 It was not yet 11 o'cl. when P. returned ("re-entered") to the hotel.
— 2 He was sleepy and went (all) straight up to his room.
— 3 He undressed and went (put himself) to bed.
— 4 But he could not get to sleep at once.
— 5 The noise of the street kept (was holding) him awake.
6 Still, the window and (the) shutters were closed.
— 7 Then he turned on the light again ("rekindled the electricity"'),
— 8 and began (set himself) to read a French paper
— 9 which he had bought and put in his pocket.
10 By (In) fixing his attention on what he was reading,
11 he gradually (little "at" little) forgot the noise of the street.
— 12 At the end of a quarter of an hour, he turned off (extinguished) the light again (of new),
— 13 and fell into a deep sleep ("went to sleep profoundly").

— 4 still, I am sure I left (to have left) it there.
— 5 You surprise ("astonish" me; nobody, has (is) come here in our absence.
— 6 Ah ! here it is! It had (was) fallen behind the wash-stand (table)!

Il se mit à chanter  : He began to sing.

Nous apprenons peu à peu le français : We are learning French gradually (little by little).
Allumez, éteignez la lumière! Turn on, turn out the light!
Allez tout droit, puis tournez à droite : Go straight on then turn to the right.
Regardez derrière vous ! Look behind you !
